Yes I want my profession to fail....you are delusional.
you need to stay off the Hippy Cabbage

Then you are either fool by Obama or you are a supporter for his mission moving this country towards socialism/income distribution. Obama doesn't care about you or me.

I am not even going to talk about his other policies, or Putin treat him like a puppet. Obamacare alone is really going to set us back, way back. We will all paid. The only people who think this is a good idea are the people who love entitlements or the Medicaid eligible crowd.

That was my point. Most of us had, or sought out, roll models who had attained our dream.
But those roll models aren't available for some kids who possess the raw talent.

There can be no question that the American Dream is fading for most young people.

I think the luck comes into play with the situation you are born into. How many of us grew up in a trailer park or a ghetto?

i was born in a trailer park IN THE GHETTO. and i made it.

I try not to get too political on here but I do think "luck" is a pervading thought process with progressives.

Life does not happen to me I control my future. This is the thought process that made America and honestly western civilization exceptional. This new generation of passive people scares the **** out of me.

I'm a conservative but I think that Malcolm Gladwell is onto something. Nurture plays a big role.

Ok, ok, ok...

And Putin was right. There is nothing inherently "exceptional" about Americans, and it IS dangerous to believe so.

JCM, i credit you to be able to get where you are. some might argue that it was "luck" that you were born into a society with the upward mobility that allows such a thing to happen. if you were born on the streets of mogadishu or the slums of mexico city, this may not be the case. that is what makes america exceptional, rather than the belief that the american people are somehow better.

my parents moved to this country to give us the best opportunity in life. They did not move to England or Europe or Kenya or any other country. If you don't believe this county is exceptional you are a lost cause...

effing guilt-laden liberals... i was not born in a trailer park in the ghetto...i was kidding. not sure there are really trailer parks in the ghetto. I was born the son of famous rock star, I wont tell who but the bands name was "(something) stones" or was i?

there is no question that you can make it out of the ghetto or the trailer park, but it is probably harder then an upper middle class background with two parents that help you do homework...
but life isnt fair... i wish i was taller, and could have made it as professional basketball player, make millions and marry a stripper, but instead im average height, above average intelligence, and exceedingly high in drive and ambition. you cant win them all..

I would never diminish the fact that we all worked our asses off to get where we are. Also, I agree that "luck" (or lack of) is way more often than not used as an excuse to fail.

If you took any one off this board, took all his money, possessions, degrees and book knowledge away and put him in the trailer park inside the ghetto, he would find opportunities and rise up like a god damn phoenix. No question about it. But that's because he has the confidence to do so. We're not trapped in this endless cycle of "Them people out there got lucky, they gets all the money, we needs our gubmin to give us what we deserve." Like THEY (the other people) are capable of success, and WE are not. People who marinade in that sauce their entire lives are f-d. And these freakin politicians that capitalize on that notion, they just perpetuate the cycle. Our "luck" is that we were never a part of that cycle.

I don't think it has anything to do with lack of opportunity or lack of money or handouts. It's confidence that's missing in the "unlucky". Real, deep-seeded, belief in yourself that these bastards don't have. Personally, I think it's a charitable cause, not govt work. Because charities don't profit by keeping people enslaved.
