**The Official University of Minnesota Class of 2020 Interview/Acceptance Thread**

I know all schools charge more for OOS, but Minnesota seems to be extraordinarily high compared to others I've looked at. This was more of a rhetorical question/complaint with resentment that I'm not from Minnesota.

It does appear a little above average, but not quite 90k/year, from their 2018 projected expenses off their website:

Non-Resident (Fall/Spring)
58,887.98 D1
61,243.50 D2
63,693.24 D3
66,240.97 D4

Summer
16,096.60 D2
16,740.46 D3
17,410.08 D4

OOS tuition at south carolina is 100, 80, 100, and 100 for D1-2-3-4 years FWIW. :) See, MN is a bargain! :D

I don't think Minnesota is unique in this. Out of State tuition at most state schools is ridiculous. And, I understand it too, as it meant to attract people loyal to living and practicing dentistry in Minnesota. What I do wish the school would have done, was have a program of sorts that gives an out of state students 'in-state' tuition, but you agree to practice dentistry in Minnesota upon graduation, because I would sign that in a heartbeat. My understanding is that the state of Minnesota desperately needs dentists anyway.
Even instate tuition is on the high side. I went through the Class of 2019 projected attendance costs (not including room and board, just tuition and fees) and it was about $210,000. But like you said the out of state tuition isn't abnormally high it is on par with most schools cost-wise.

Maybe it's just based on tuition of the other schools I'm looking at OOS, but Minnesota was one of the highest. Oh well.

I think at the interview they mentioned around 15% of the class.
That sounds right, but the number is low because it seemed like a lot of the class didn't want to specialize, which is important to take into consideration

It's odd because they have one of the best research programs in the country. Why focus on it so heavily if most go into General practice

I think Minnesota has a very good CE program and many dentists prefer to go that route rather than straight up specializing. That's the route I'm looking at I personally have almost no interest in specializing because I like the broad scope of a General Dentist. And if for example I really like endodontics I can specialize in it more at my practice and take CE to better handle more difficult cases. When you specialize you kind of give up your freedom of the large scope of dentistry and hone in on the area you are specializing.

That has been my thoughts exactly as well. If I love doing something, I can still do as much of it as I want as a GP and still have the variety. Plus, as a specialist, you get sent everything that no one else wants to deal with. That might be your thing or it might not be. :)

Hey just got an interview invite at Minnesota. Can someone explain what the interview process is like? They gave me a schedule but I would like to know more details.

Standard process; school background presentation, finaid presentation, school/clinic tour, lunch, and an hour of behavioral interview questions.

Do you guys remember if UMN is starting the new curriculum in 2016 or did they mention vaguely that they would like to change it for the future? Cant remember their plans exactly...

They have been slowly changing it over the years. The class that just started (class of 2019) just became the first class to start assisting in clinic right away their first year. I know they were moving classes around but I don't think it will be extremely drastic I bet they will slowly implement changes over quite a few years so they can see if what they are doing is better for the students and the school.

Do you know if Minnesota still interview after February? Did they fill 3/4 of the class already? Thanks.

Unless someone has a spare $200,000, I'll be dropping Minnesota soon. Holding on to my spot just a little longer to keep the dream alive.
:sorry:

I think they are done sending out interview invites. If they end up sending a couple more that's probably because people have dropped their interviews. Usually from conversations with admissions they stop interviewing late January/early February.

Sad :( that's a really good financial decision though!
Ya. I hate myself for it now but in the long run I'll be ok. If I were an avid Starbucks buyer though I'd probably reconsider. Enjoy the free morning coffee!!

Has anyone's check been cashed? Do they email you to let you know? I mailed mine a week ago and the money is still in my account. The 31st is coming up pretty quickly and I'm sure they will be closed today. Freaking out a little bit...

As long as the check is dated before or on Dec 31st, you're fine!

They cashed mine about 2 weeks after I sent it.

Sorry if this was already mentioned but I have an interview later in January and was curious if the interview is open or closed file? I didn't see them mention anything in the email I received.

does anyone have the year by year expense sheet thats given during the interview and can they post a picture of it please?

Hi all! I have an interview coming up, (in state) and I was wondering if someone could give me more information on the summer research program they emailed me about? Also, I've heard the interview questions are very situational. Could someone possibly elaborate on that? Thank you!

Hi fellow predentists, congrats to all whom have made it this far and I wish the best of luck to finish strong and become desired professionals and provide great oral health to your community.

I recently got my first interview invite to visit University of Minnesota. My interview is actually next week, can anyone give me the heads up on what to expect? I've never been that far north, I'm from South Florida and enjoying the ~80 degrees winter here. I'm curious to know if anyone that has interviewed with them from this cycle can post some of the questions you can remember? Thanks to all for your postings.

The questions are all behavioral questions based on past situations, such as "tell us about a time you had a conflict and how was it resolved?" You are allowed to think of a situation for a minute or two before you answer, and the interviewers aren't supposed to expand on your answers. They just write it all down and the committee looks over it later. Since you're from far, I'm guessing you got the morning session. Interview is at either 8am or 9am, then tour, etc. Everyone is very nice and it's a lovely day! Make sure you have time to explore Minneapolis. It's an awesome city

Dear @hellofuturedentists and @Fightingsiouxyaya :

Thank you a lot for the heads up. I'm a bit anxious as to what to expect because this is my first interview and also there is going to huge climate change for me. I do have the early appointment, and I am bringing a heavy coat as I read online that it will snow this weekend and I'm staying a couple nights to explore the city as it might be my home for the next ~4-5 yrs.

I interviewed today! Enjoyed every minute of it. I'm also from Minnesota so I'm used to the cold haha best of luck, you'll do great!

Anyone receive an acceptance who interviewed December/January? I know they told us we won't hear until February but it doesn't hurt to ask haha

Any updates? I remember in the interview it was said that offers were going to be sent around the beginning of February.

I interviewed two weeks ago and they said the next big round of acceptances was going to be late last week or early this week now. I'm guessing it will be this week since it doesn't appear anyone on here heard from them last week.
