The Republic of Texas XXXIV: Whoever doesn't like Whataburger needs to leave

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
A lot of the GPA/MCAT are outdated it seems on your list - Have you looked at the TAAHCP Report that was released earlier this year? It does have duplicated statistics but the numbers are probably not that far off from the report.
I agree. The numbers do seem low but at the same time the TAAHCP report doesnt take into account the waitlisters that get accepted later during the cycle.

So the GPA/MCAT posted is the matriculant data for entering classes of 2014 of each school, usually posted on each schools' website or on interview day. TAAHCP and MSAR reports GPA/MCAT of all students accepted to each school, so the data will be slightly different. Like you said, the person with a 4.0GPA/40MCAT that may have been accepted to every school can ultimately only end up at 1, thus lowering the averages at every other school. I will update as soon as matriculant data has been published! (accepted vs matriculated data can be misleading at times).

Preliminary 2015 statistics: http://www.taahp.net/TAAHP 2015 Report.pdf

3 of the reported stats are EY2013, though they haven't changed much in 1 year, since EY2015 hasn't been released yet. EY2014 stats:

Thanks for the clarification.
This was an issue also with the MSAR posting average matriculant MCAT as a 33 but in reality was a 31. A 2-3 point drop can be very misleading as you mentioned.

Decided very recently to take a gap year, so it looks like I won't be applying with you guys :( Any word on what medical schools think of using the old mcat for next year's cycle?

I haven't heard any word on the old mcat being looked at negatively for Texas schools (someone correct me if they heard otherwise please). As long as your mcat will not be expired by the time you apply, I wouldn't think there would be an issue.

Check out this table, it lists a lot of schools and which MCAT version they will accept, prefer, or not accept for 2016-2018 cycles:

https://www.aamc.org/students/download/398586/data/mcatexampolicy.pdf

For clarification, "Each
Application Cycle refers to the entering class of that year. For example, the 2016 Application Cycle refers to the 2016 entering class."

Thanks! It seems like the only Texas school that prefers the new one for the 2017 cycle is UTMB. I wonder to what degree they "prefer" the new one though.

Applying this application cycle. Should submit app this weekend.

My TMDSAS app was complete on 5/11, received first II invite by TTech Lubbock today. They are on it!!!

Daaaaaaang mind sharing your stats? Or just telling me if that quick of a response seems to be normal or did you cure cancer?

@Chlorini, do you mean secondary by II (so, not an interview invite)? I also received the secondary today, but I thought that was the first round of them...not expecting any interview invites for another few weeks, based on last year's thread!

Oh lol I thought II meant secondary!! Lol no, no interviews yet! But that's the first secondary I've received. Utsw and Texas a&m you have to do on your own.

@DrShephardWannabe I have no idea, but that does seem fast. I submitted on the 2nd. My last LOR came in on 5/11. My stats are competitive for all texas school with the exception of utsw/baylor.

haha, that's OK @Chlorini, I figured that's what you were saying ;) (or else that Dr. ShephardWannabe is correct and you have cured cancer :))

I actually think this secondary took longer to arrive than in previous years. I think a previous applicant said it took 5 days from time of primary submission for TTU Lubbock's to be sent, and I submitted on 5/2 with the last LOR coming in on 5/4, so, a bit longer than last year.

I don't know why, but having to wait for the link (unlike A&M and UTSW) made it seem more "real." Here we go! :highfive:

@BZG64 can you post the prompts in the El Paso thread? Or let us know if they were the same as last year? Super excited about that school but they didn't send me a secondary yet.

Looks like there the same from last year, but I'll go ahead and post them.

It was a secondary invite. But if you do have an II that early, you deserve to give yourself a nice pat on the back.

@texan2414...actually no. Just a secondary invite (I was dumb and thought II meant secondary as in 2, not as in interview invite). Still learning student doc lingo :)

If you need outside help to get you to submit the first application to the rest of your life then you've got more problems than procrastination. Just do it.

Yea. I need to stop being so lazy. But TMDSAS asks for so much info....

Your scores are great. It would be a shame to hurt your chances because you couldn't write a few hundred characters!

For those that did the UTSW secondary, did you get those major line breaks in the essay after you submitted it? I copy + pasted from Word...fixed all the breaks and after I submitted, they were still there.

@Mavs88

I just logged in to look at my completed secondary and it looks fine.

I just copy-pasted from Word to TextEdit and reformatted it to plain text before copy-pasting into the application.

@iDOliveinMD...UT Austin will be competitive just because of location and name alone. UT Rio Grande Valley probably won't be (it's located on the Texas/Mexico border...although South Padre is close!). Although you'd need a compelling reason to want to attend, they will prefer Spanish-speaking students/primary care interested students. At least...this is the gist I get from their website. However, if you have a 30+ MCAT and 3.6 gpa and up I'm sure your oos-ness won't matter as much (think of it this way...would they rather accept 27, 28, 29s from Texas or 27, 28, 29s from oos?)

Good luck!

All the schools are required to take no more than 10% OOS, so 5 students in each class the first four years!

What does it take to be accepted at a texas medical school if you're an out of state application? Do you have to have a stellar mcat? What if you're extremely committed to working with underserved populations or something that fits their mission? I'm thinking about applying to texas med schools.

Also, do we have to disclose all the non-texas med schools we apply to on the app? it seems kind of sketchy doing so because I don't know how they're gonna use the info.

Doe anyone know if TMDSAS allows us to send updates (other than contact info)? Or when? Or do we need to send updates to the schools themselves?

You send updates about your new grades and stuff to TMDSAS, if I recall correctly. Other than that you're not supposed to send anything to them unless it's major. Not all schools accept updates.

I'm surprised UTSW's primary care percentage is so high!
They are big on Internal medicine at my alma mater. 12 wks total during 3rd year spent on IM. Can't remember if the recent curriculum change affected this, however.

When is it time to start worrying about not getting IIs if submitted early June?
