Just shadow some random dentist or go to a regular clinic. No reason to fly anywhere in the country for that.

Shadow a local dentist. Go to a bunch of dental offices and submit your CV with a cover letter. The letter should go something like this:

"Dear Dr. X,
I am currently an Junior student at the University of X. I am interested in applying to dental school and as part of the requirements for applications, must shadow at least 50 hours. Unfortunately, I do not know of anyone in the field that is willing to let me shadow to fulfill this requirement.

I would love for the opportunity to shadow at your office, and any number of hours that you are willing to let me shadow are hours that are counted towards my requirements.

Thank you for your time. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me at your earliest convenience. "

So yeah. Something like that. I sent that to around 20 dentists before 1 allowed me to shadow him. Then, he asked some of his specialist friends (orthodontist and prosthodontist) to let me shadow and I got more hours from that.

Good luck bro.

I've been in the same situation a year ago. If private offices don't work out, try community clinics. However, instead of asking for shadowing, ask if you can volunteer. I got 100+ hrs from my local community clinic by volunteering there.

Hey, Jassel here. First off, I know it might seem too much to ask, I understand that... I'm a Pre-dental student and I have no connections to the world of dentistry whatsoever. I would like to know if anyone in this forum would give me a hand at their local school clinic to shadow someone for a week maxx? It can be anywhere in the country, really. I really need this to make my application stronger. I'm appealing to the benevolence of the dental students to help a fellow hopefully future colleague. Thanks in advance. :highfive:

Ps: I know UCLA has this and it's called observership , so I will apply there as well.

Not to be picky or anything but your profile says you are a dental student?

I had read about asking for volunteering instead of straight up shadowing, what I didn't pick up was the community clinic part of if, this is great info, thanks a lot pinetree!

Yes, I am. 22, 5th year dental student at UAM Nicaragua. However, I'm applying to a US school for a two year program and that makes me a pre-dental in this particular situation, even if international. Is there someway you can help me out? Thanks a lot pal

Ah! I see! I didn't know. Well, pinetree covered it all pretty well above. Are you going to be moving to the US soon? If so, I would get into contact with the dental school and let them know your situation. I believe they will be your best source. Good luck friend!
