I am very excited to be starting MSUCOM at the DMC this June, but I can't decide whether I should live alone or with roommates.
Financially, I'm not worried about it. I have a couple connections, and ultimately, living alone will be only marginally ($100-$200/month) more expensive than with a roommate. I am slightly older than average, 26, so my tolerance for partying and drama are pretty low. I am also in a committed relationship, but my partner will be working on a post-doc about 3 hours away. He's likely to visit me on weekends so that we can vigorously work on separate projects at the same table and then sleep in the same bed.
I lived in Detroit with roommates while I got my master's degree, and I am not afraid of Detroit (you shouldn't be either) but I do recognize that it is slightly more risky not having someone else at your place, stomping around and turning on lights when you're not there.
Also, roommates are great for that "I'm at the store, do you need anything?" text and the occasional social meal or drink, but I have been anxious in the past about being bothersome. I'm really quite easy-going, I wouldn't describe myself as tidy and quiet, but I am not necessarily loud or messy either.
I'm curious what your thoughts are, and if I'm forgetting any serious positives or negatives on either side.
