I have sort of a weird situation. I'm an M3 who will have completed surgery and neuro before my 3rd rotation Family Practice. I have been assigned to a place 5 hours away and have no desire to be in a rural community. I am allowed to exchange an M4 elective with an M3 one, and since ophtho is something I am considering, I would like to do an elective during that month. Will I be able to get anything out of an ophtho elective without medicine experience, and only surgery and neuro experience to back me up? Thanks for your input!

Our school gives us one month of electives during third year and I took ophtho in January (after medicine, but not surgery). I felt as prepared as any of the fourth years taking the elective and watching 1000 cholycystectomies later on surgery wouldn't have prepared me at all for ophthalmology.

In short, I'd take the opportunity, what do you have to lose?
