Hello Foreign Veterinarians,

I want to start this thread for all of us who are going to take the CPE next and have no idea where to start training or where to get the experience to be able to pass. With this in mind, please do not post anything about the other tests (English proficiency test, BSCE, NAVLE), it will just get confusing and there are plenty of threads about these.

I have not scheduled my test yet but I am thinking taking it by the end of this year, perhaps November 2014. I have been doing some research as to where I could go and receive some training, paying or not, and here is what I have found so far. If you know of any other possible training programs please add them and if you have done any of the following please post your feedback!:

-Surgery and Anesthesia:

1-Humane Alliance in North Carolina is a shelter that offers a 4-day course to graduate vets... there is a cost but its not ridiculous: http://humanealliance.org/vet-training/syllabus

2-Sterling Animal Shelter in Massachussetts offers a more personal course since its just one student at a time. However, it its 3x more expensive and you dont get to practice anesthesia. You have to email them directly to ask for the information, I didnt find anything posted on their website.

3- LATIN VETS ONLY: There is a 3 day course in spanish in Nicaragua (taught by a nicaraguan vet) designed specifically to teach surgery to Latin-American veterinarians, they do not train you for the CPE but they teach you how to spay and neuter... its very different, however, if you need to review the basics this can be beneficial. It is a free course although you would have to fly all the way out there for just 3 days so that is up to you. http://worldvets.org/campaigns/training-programs/

4-WorldVets have multiple surgery training programs throughout the year. The downside? They are ridiculously expensive!!! For more info: http://worldvets.org/volunteer/upcoming-projects/

-Equine:

1- Latitude 36 Mobile clinic is in North Carolina and it offers a 5 day course on equine medicine and some food animal as well on request: http://www.lat36vet.com/CPE-Prep.html

2-I believe that Peterson and Smith equine hospital in Florida has a seminar to help veterinarian improve their equine medicine skills. Here the link: http://www.petersonsmith.com/news-and-events/item/equine-veterinary-skills-practicum

I have not found anything for bovine or food animal or necropsy... I hope this list helps you find what you need. Please add the places you have gone to or heard of. Thanks!

Hello Ibolit,
Thank you for this information! I wish I could go to one of these school for a year! But how would we pay such amount?
I have a friend that did the VSTEP at Guelph and really really enjoyed it. However, she completed the program at a bad time, right before her BSCE. She did pass her BSCE but by the time she took the CPE a few years later she had forgotten a lot of things. So please keep this in mind my fellow vets... You want to get practical experience just before the CPE so your mind and your hands are fresh! :)

Another thing, I believe Iowa State, Oregon and Madison University sometimes accept ECFVG-enrolled vets to do the senior year, I think it depends if they have an open spot or not.

For people who cannot enroll in training programs, can we discuss on how we plan to get experience and what topics we are going to focus on? For example, I am going to work in a small animal vet practice over summer and learn from there. I am also looking into large animal vet practices.

Hello Chatra, I agree with you, I would like to hear how previous CPE candidates got their training without taking any of this courses. I personally been trying to get to volunteer at my closest ASPCA and try to practice some surgeries but havent heard back from them... and I have an equine friend who is going to let me shadow her for a few weeks..... Regarding the food animal section, I have not found a vet yet who is willing to let me ride along for a few weeks. :( I am emailing everybody I can find online but most of the people who normally accept students are pretty booked for this summer.

Hello everyone,

Here are some other international short courses on spay/neuter for veterinary students and graduates that I have found during my search.... might be useful for CPE purposes, enjoy!:

- Panama, several dates a year!: http://globalnomadic.com/placements/spay-neutering-veterinary-course-panama
- Jamaica: http://www.spay-neuterjamaica.org/isnn/spay-neuter-program.htm
- India, several dates a year!: http://www.wvs.org.uk/how-to-help/trips/surgical-training-for-vet-grads-students/
- VIDA Volunteers has several sites throughout Latinamerica several times a year: http://vidavolunteertravel.org/you-can-make-a-difference

Has anyone found anything else?

any one wish to study for CPE please let me know hopefully we can find good material and good chances to practice before exam

Hello Angelos, I already have plenty of material but would like to know what do you have in mind for practicing before the test. Thank you for sharing!

I just wanted to vouch for Latitude 36. I just took Dr. Gemeinhardt's training course for a week and that woman is a god-send. I am surprised more people do not take her course as she teaches exactly what you will need to know for the CPE. She is like a hidden gem right now and I don't think many people take her up on her offer.

Just e-mail her and see. I think for the training you get for the 5 days the rates are very reasonable. She even will allow you to stay in her cabin (which is a very beautiful place to be) and it is equipped with everything you need (stove, kitchen, study area, own room with bed and sheets and fully equipped bathrooms).

But of course the best part is working with her horses and goats and going with her to dairy/beef cattle farms. It is an absolutely AMAZING experience and exactly what the vet ordered for those seeking large animal experience.

Hi BD71, I just want to tell you I scheduled my CPE for November 2014 in Mississippi, but I had plenty of dates available in several places, almost for each month this year... I was surprised since I've read that some people had troubles scheduling it soon enough, so I did it a year ahead even I really think I didn't have to :)

Thank you so much for opening this subject only, it is great to have selected information at one place . I have scheduled my CPE for Nov 2014 and I am still working on the options how to get myself organized. I think the most important on-hand experience we can get is working in a small animal practice, monitoring anesthesia, placing catheters and pulling doctor's sleeve to tell us all about procedures from the CPE manual whenever he gets a chance to show them to you :) It is good to get into a busy practice so you see as much as you can...The rest of the things, large animal medicine and such, should be less time consuming I hope :) I plan to go to North Carolina for equine practice and I will let you know how it went :)
I am in Atlanta area so if anyone is interested in joining the forces or sharing ideas, let me know :)

Hi,
Could you please mail me whether you know any other places in USA to learn spaying? THANKS

Hi,
Could you please tell me how you are going to learn spaying?

Thanks
Hi proudvet! Well, for the past several weeks I have been trying to find any surgical training program and I am coming to a dead end constantly :)
Humane Alliance in NC looked to me as the best way to go and I was hoping to go there but their next available spot is April 2015. Also they need you to get a temporary licence, which means to transfer your licence from any country in the world (as I have been told).
The shelter in Massachusetts is not doing training programs any more.
The programs at some universities are crazy expensive ($17-20 000) and registering time is a year ahead. So, at this point it seems impossible for me to find any hands-on surgical practice :)
Shelters are not very interested in our problems either :)
Sooooo... anyone knows any secret vet in ANY STATE who would help us poor people for reasonable money to get some dozen spays ? I would appreciate that information so much :)

I passed NAVLE about a month ago. After a month break, going to start studying for CPE. Just one quick question. Do I need a book that covers CPE to prepare it or only study materials that many universities offer can cover pretty much? If so, recommend books that are useful for CPE candidats. Any advices or recommendations are always welcomed. Thanks.

Does RAVS (rural area vets) by HSVMA not take foreign grads?
Well, looks like they do :) They have wonderful field trips that I did not know about :)
Thank you Minnerbelle!!!

Everyone looking for some extra experience for CPE and having fun with it, check their website :) http://www.ruralareavet.org/schedule.php
Also, for everyone looking for surgery practice, another idea for spay/neuter experience can be NicaVets (It's a trip to Nicuaragua)

I passed my NAVLE in Apr 14. I am planning to take the CPE in Sept/Oct 14 in LV. Still struggling with concrete experience though I have been shadowing a couple of vets. Any advice from ppl who have taken this exam in LV recently.

Dear ECFVG candidates and future veterinarians
We just started a small place for foreign veterinary graduates to come at get experience in a clinical setting. If you need any help and guidance or practical experience feel free to contact me. We do have two bedroom ( so you can stay) condominium with kitchen and pool, with a library (being set up) you can come study, discuss and succeed in becoming properly trained veterinarians and close to a veterinary hospital. I went through difficult times in not able to access to even have basic information, any sort of study material forget about practical exposure. Passing these ECFVG, (BCSE, NAVLE, CPE) exams is first part of difficult story ahead, you need to have practical exposure of dealing with clients, diagnosis process, and running diagnostic tests, taking radiographs, interpretation, placing catheters, performing dental exams, to be able to meet the requirements of not only passing the exams but be able to step in to job market. Still in the process of figuring out bovine experience (soon we will be able to) but we do access to following equine vets if you need. This is in south east San Diego county, CA. Good luck to you. My contact e-mail : [email protected]

I had the same experience with the Humane Aliance. Most people I know have worked with shelters. Unfortunately for me the few shelter I contacted have either shut down these programs or the vets have moved on.

How was your experience in NC. I will be there the 1st week of Aug.

Go to your country or to another country with not too many restrictions and practice surgery and anesthesia as much as you can with total freedom, I tried several places in several states and the conclusion is that vets in the US do not want to jeopardize their license helping out somebody that they feel is going to be competency in the labor market. That is the best way I consider to get prepared for anesthesia and surgery

Hi,I am gonna take CPE sometimes in future, could you please give me some advice how to get prepared ?

I passed my NAVLE in Apr 14. I am planning to take the CPE in Sept/Oct 14 in LV. Still struggling with concrete experience though I have been shadowing a couple of vets. Any advice from ppl who have taken this exam in LV recently.
Hi,Could you please give me some advice to get ready for CPE?

Thanks!
Hi dear, did you take CPE?Could you please some advice to get ready for this exam?

I heard that community college which has the vet tech program can be one option for foreign veterinarians because the professors in there are veterinarians and college may have horses, cows to have practice with. Also as an foreigner, visa status is so importatant as you know. (College can provide I-20.)
Is there anyone who apply the vet tech program??

jsteward, post: " Go to your country or to another country with not too many restrictions and practice surgery and anesthesia as much as you can with total freedom..."
Well, that is a good advice and I have realized that in a hard way...after a while:) I regret that I didn't do surgeries when I went home for a vacation, hoping I will find something in US later. Unless you you personally know a vet who is doing spay campaigns and is willing to help you, which is ...well, a dream...go home and get the surgery done :)
Also,I couldn't get to Humane Alliance training, so for those of you who are willing to travel abroad there is another option for surgery training in Romania http://www.veterinarytrainingcamp.com/ and it is a great one because they train only one or two persons at the time, so you can get as many surgeries as you want :) Another possibility that I know of in USA is http://www.ruralareavet.org/schedule.php but with them it is advisable to have some surgical experience prior to going on a trip since it is a field trip with the whole veterinary crew and you are there to get the work done not to be trained :) But it is a good experience for field medicine in general . Third option is going on a trip to Latin America, there are many spay/neuter campaigns there, and with some of them speaking Spanish is not necessary. Good luck everyone!

Hello,
Do you mind sharing your study plan for CPE. I plan to take next year.
Thank you.

I have been thinking about take vet tech program and work as vet tech first while I am preparing for vet license exam. However, I found it is not economically realistic. It takes a couple of years to finish vet tech program and it cost a lot. So, it gave up this idea.
