The application is now open for the 2016 HEART elective! HEART-IM = Humanistic Elective in Activism, Reflective Transformation, and Integrative Medicine.

HEART-IM is an AMSA sponsored elective clerkship for fourth-year medical students to explore what it means to be a healer and how we can embody that identity throughout our careers. Twenty-five students from around the country will spend four weeks living cooperatively at a retreat center in the redwoods practicing various forms of integrative medicine, gaining tools to incorporate patient advocacy and social justice into their careers, and reflecting on their path to becoming healer-physicians.

Expert physicians, healers, and teachers will lead didactic and experiential sessions in topics including:

effective communication
physician wellness
end-of-life care
narrative medicine
social determinants of health
energy medicine
integrative medicine for underserved populations
reflective and meditative practices
clinical nutrition

Time for individual and group reflection, informal teaching and learning from each other, and exploring the outdoors will be planned into a robust schedule. Students will receive 4 weeks of elective credit.

does it involve rubbing powdered tiger dick onto your chest?

I like humanism in medicine as much as anyone, but "integrative medicine"* is garbage.

(*or CAM or whatever else they're calling it this week.)

Energy medicine? Are you serious? A small band of med students is going to venture deep into the woods away from society and learn how to wave their arms around in the air in order to channel magical energy and cure people from a distance? Is this just an elaborate LARP retreat for fantasy-loving medical students or something? Why don’t these guys just look into the standard renaissance fairs, MMORPGs, or D&D nights if they have to get the urge to play magical healer out of their system instead of screwing around with other people’s very real health?

Well since they will be learning about “integrative medicine for underserved populations,” they will probably be learning how to convince other people to let them rub powdered tiger dick on the sick chests of the poor and uneducated and then charge them for it.

From the AMSA site:
"Complimentary and Alternative Medicine or Traditional Medicine modalities: One day presentations of healing modalities (didactic lectures and experiential presentations), including homeopathy, nutrition, Ayuvedic medicine. Student presentations of modalities of interest, personal use, and/or expertise that meet the goals of basic proficiency in responsible referral or collaborative treatment. Hands-on and experiential workshops in healing modalities."
