University of Arizona - Tucson & Phoenix Class of 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone been able to accept or decline their fin aid yet? I can't :( Soon, hopefully

Logan, I noticed we're in the same dissection group, as well as jcslater. :)

I emailed financial aid about that today. They said sometime after Jul 6.

That's awesome. I have been in the process of packing/moving for the past few days so I haven't checked any of that in a few days (finally got internet again today).

Looks like I'll be accepting my awards after I get back from vacation. Does any one know if we can set up direct deposit for it? I had that at ASU, and it was just nice to have the money instantly in my account...its easier to go to the casino when you have the money right away. I figure I can go to med school for free if I put my room and board money on 31 black.

They keep changing the studentlink site for finaid stuff, so I don't know exactly how to do it... but, yeah you can set up direct deposit (somehow).

So I'm sure all the Phxer's have gotten the email from Elika at this point regarding dinner next week. That should be a lot of fun and I'm planning on going but I was wondering if SDNers wanted to do an additional thing before orientation at Four Peaks or something. I don't know about you guys but for someone like me it's always nice to be able to put faces to names and hang out for a bit before being thrown into a week of team-building exercises and ice breakers.

Edit: Obviously the invitation extends beyond MS1s to everyone else who wants to come. This means you, Erik. Stand me up again at Four Peaks and see what happens to your kneecaps.

Brrooother "likes" this. (Sorry, just came from Facebook). I was there that night you stood us up, too! Thank god I ran into aztri - I was about to leave!

I was able to accept my fin aid, and the class schedule for the first block has been posted! :D Class is out by noon just about every T,Th :) Should be a good study time (the weeks we don't have Doctor and Patient).

Could someone post the info for that book we were supposed to read before prologue? I can't find the email any more :( Thanks! :D

Its called Sizwe's Test. I bought it online for pretty cheap if I recall correctly. That's about all the info I have on it as I have not started reading it yet. I guess I should get on top of that, but it has been an absolutely insane past couple of weeks for me. Needless to say, I am ready for school to start, so I can have one thing to focus on.

In other news, I just bought my new laptop for school last night. I'm really happy with it so far (although I haven't even had it a full 24 hours). Its a Samsung that surpasses all of the requirements set forth by the COM, and it only cost $649, so for those of you looking to get one still you DO NOT have to spend the ~$1300 they budget to get a great computer. Some quick specs for those who are curious: Samsung, 14" screen, Intel i3 2.26 GHz dual core processor, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive, blu-ray player, hdmi output, etc.

The reason I mention my new computer (no, not just to brag about it :p), is to make sure no one missed the email from the IT people, like I almost did:

"
The ITS Helpdesk will be offering several sessions for the purpose of installing software and getting your laptop ready for school.

During these sessions you will receive, free of charge, the following:

Microsoft Office 2007 Professional
Sophos Anti-virus
Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.3.3 (including Adobe Air)
Adobe Flash 10.1

Additionally our staff will prepare your laptop for the school year with updates and patches as well as settings to connect to the University’s wireless systems.

For these sessions you should bring your laptop, its power cord, and note to the staff any login information you may have used in its setup. You may wait while the installs are completed or you may leave your laptop with us and return later in the day. Installation takes approximately 60 minutes. This time may be longer if operating system patching is necessary.

The opportunities are:

In Room 3114 - Multi-Disciplinary Labs (MDLs)

Bridge Program:

Monday, July 19, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.
Tuesday, July 20, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.

1st Year Medical Students:

Monday, July 26, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.
Tuesday, July 27, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.
Wednesday, July 28, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.
Thursday, July 29, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M.
Friday, July 30, 2010 9 A.M. – 4 P.M."

So don't go out and buy microsoft office or a full anti-virus program, because it looks like they are giving it to us free. That's easily around $200 you can save.

Hey, thanks! I don't think I got that email . . . Does anyone have an orientation schedule?

So I set up a direct deposit web refund for my financial aid, and uaccess lists its disbursement date as July 19th - today - but nothing pending yet. If anyone else has success with this, let me know :D

My wife and I finally moved to town :) Things have been working out pretty well, and I bought a new bike (my old one was like 80 in bike years, haha). How are preparations coming for everyone?

Just want to let MadeIn and Mathlink know that you guys got a shout out from Tara today at the Phoenix orientation as guys that the COMPhoenix adcoms were rooting for in your future endeavors! I thought it was a really nice gesture. Apparently they follow SDN pretty closely, and they plan to unmask some of us more prolific posters later on in orientation...uh oh....:)

I tried to setup direct deposit, but it didn't work for me. If I recall correctly, I remember seeing that our financial aid would be distributed on the 23rd (Friday). If you click to see your financial award, it should have a link to see distribution dates.

Glad to hear you're in town. My wife and I wound up getting an apartment temporarily, and we're still hoping to be able to get a house down here. I've been enjoying my time in Tucson thus far. I had my first Sonoran Dog yesterday, which was freakin' delicious (unhealthy too). For the most part I've just been relaxing and getting ready for school to start. Where did you and your wife wind up moving to? My wife and I are at an apartment complex near River and Campbell. Its nothing fancy, but seems safe enough which is probably the most important thing to me.

You better watch out Shep, they're going to expose your cocaine and strippers addictions...

No, I beat them to that when I wore my "I heart strippers and coke" t-shirt to orientation today. The dress code was business casual, and what says Wall Street businessman stronger than that t-shirt? Nothing.

I one upped Shep. I came as a stripper with coke... jk... I was pretty shocked to see our SDN handles up on the ppt today, though. Haha.

Hahaha, on the PowerPoint? That's freaking hilarious! Tara cracks me up. I hope you Phoenix MS1's have a great couple weeks, and I can't wait to see you on August 9th! And Tucson MS1's, good luck to you as well!

So basically you're saying you exposed yourself to your classmates? I'm not really sure that is the best way to make a good first impression. I usually wait a couple of weeks before I expose myself to people...

Wow, I guess that confirms that adcoms DO watch the forums  :)

Thanks for the schedule. And I got a call yesterday - there was a mix up with my fin aid; it was on Phx's disbursement schedule.

Dude why is it that in every conversation we have you have to talk about exposing yourself? I mean take last week for example- I just called to ask if I could borrow your lawnmower and you launched into a 45 minute story about exposing yourself at a petting zoo. What's up with that?

I am purchasing a new computer for med school in Tucson. Any suggestions considering mac vs pc, programs needed for classes, note-taking during lectures, researching for case-based groups, tablet pros and cons, etc.

Thanks SO much!

Being a Phoenix student, you may prefer a Tucson student's opinion over mine (not sure if the two schools are that different, though it seemed in my re-visit to each that more Phoenix students use computers during lecture). That being said, I ADORE my HP EliteBook 2730p. It is a tablet (which I use extensively, though this is a personal preference), it is very light, sturdy, good keyboard, bright screen for a tablet, etc. I did a ton of research on tablets before purchasing mine last year and this one seemed to be one of the top-rated. It also was quite expensive, so I don't know what your price range is (I had money put away for me from my grandparents that I used).

If you have any more questions, just ask on the thread or PM me, but really the end decision is completely up to you (as long as the computer meets school specifications, which most do). Our class is probably half Mac and half PC, probably only 20% tablets, laptops of all sizes, etc, and everyone seems quite happy. I love the tablet because it helps me stay organized - anything hand-written can stay with my regular notes, and I can highlight and add to PowerPoint slides from the professors. I believe you have access to class notes in Tucson, so this might not be as useful to you, but I'm not sure. Just thought I'd give my two cents. :)

When you expose yourself as much as I do, you can basically bring it up in any conversation. For example just this morning I was talking to a nun at a church, and I told her how the last time I saw a nun was at a strip club and I wanted to know how often she worked at the strip club. Then that just led to me going on a tirade about exposing myself to chil...maybe I should stop before I get kicked out of school and investigated for sex crimes.

Well, if you want to spend over twice as much on a computer then go for a Mac, but if you want an equally good computer for a lot less get a PC. Not that I am anti-Mac, I think they're nice, but they're just way too expensive when you can find a quality PC (ie not a Dell) for so much less. However, if you want to have a fancy, trendy brand of computer go for the Mac. As for choosing one, I don't think it matters all that much which one you get, since they'll set it up for you, but I'd suggest taking a look at the specifications of the computer the med school was selling and try to at least meet those specs. My computer exceeds all the specifications of that computer AND it half the cost. Its a Samsung with really high reviews if you're interested.

I'm printing this post out and carrying it with me every day I interact with new applicants. "And that's why it's Phoenix over Tucson, kids," I'll say as they nod slowly after taking a moment to compose themselves, wiser but far less innocent than they were moments ago.

Haha, you'd probably be surprised by how many more people would be coming to Tucson if they knew that's what they had to look forward to...

I appreciate your insight on computers. I'll be taking your comments into account when I make my decision.
Gracias

Does anyone know the dress-code for orientation? I know for prologue they tell us which events require formal attire, but I didn't see anything like that for orientation.

Just don't buy the computer they sell, you can get a better one for less on your own. Med school is expensive enough, so if you can save a couple hundred dollars by buying a better computer for less, do it.

I'm actually sitting here watching Canadian Football...THAT is how ready I am for school to start. I guess it also shows how ready I am for football to start too. Oh well, I know in about a week and a half I will be wishing I was back in this position being bored out of my mind. What's everyone else up to?

Just moved in today and i'm sitting here overwhelmed. lrkoehle hit me up if you want to do something. I'm bored and need friends here.

Feel bad for you man, I know what that's like. Rest assured that when you start med school you will automatically gain 110ish best friends. It's been one week for us and already I'm so jazzed about how awesome everyone is.

Moving sucks. I hated it sooo much. Moving down to Tucson was my first big move (probably because my wife has lots of stuff). We've been down here for a little while now, so I've gotten a little bit settled in. I'd be up for hanging out with some people before school starts. Maybe we could meet up for lunch or something? We could go get Sonoran dogs (featured on the show Man vs. Food). They're delicious. Would anyone else be up for that?

Can you imagine if I was there? There might be too much coolness contained within me for such a small class size (that's why I chose Tucson, more fellow classmates for my coolness to be spread amongst ).

Glad to hear Phoenix is off to a good start. What have they been having you guys do for a full week of orientation?

If you were in our class the average coolness would drop from "too-cool-for-school" to "meh..."

And as for the orientation stuff, I can't tell you. It's a secret, and they told us medical students not to associate with you pre-med rabble anymore.

Actually, your status is medical student and mine is pre-medical. So scratch that.

That's a low blow...I'm crushed. Seriously, why you gotta go there? I try so hard to make you like me, but all you can do is beat me down. Well, I'll show you how cool I am! See that! Yeah, I have sunglasses on and I'm inside. If I wasn't cool, then why would I wear my sunglasses inside?

Its kind of like relationships and facebook, if its not on facebook its not real. If you're not a med student on SDN, then you aren't really a med student.

As for me, I started reading our assigned summer book, so I think that signifies the start of being a med student, even though classes haven't started officially yet.

Aww you know I was kidding. We consider you family down in Tucson, albeit the slightly weird family that you meet at reunions and wonder if in the ensuing years since you last saw them they sustained some sort of brain injury that made them a little odd. We were actually talking about how cool it would be to hang out with the Tucson crowd over breaks and stuff and I think the idea of a Tucson vs. Phoenix paintball match was tossed around for a bit. And if I don't have a Facebook does that mean I'm a figment of my own imagination?

I am pretty confident my fellow Tucson classmates would be up for taking down you Phoenix kids...we could do a battle rap. Or we could organize a basketball game, and I'll dunk all over you! Or a football game...god knows I'm in need of football after being reduced to watching that godawful canadian football crap. When were you Phoenix kids thinking of getting this sort of shindig together? Over winter break would be a great time for outdoor activities.

You should consider yourself lucky that you don't have a facebook. Its way overrated. I have one, but I almost never use it. I keep telling myself that now that I am in Tucson maybe I will start using it to stay up with everyone, but I just can't bring myself to give in to the nonsense. If you've seen the South Park episode about facebook, that basically sums up my view on facebook.

I would be down for a sonoran dog (assuming its not literally dog) sometime. I would love to get to know my class even though I will get to meet you all soon. Where is everyone else?

thx,
Jon

Its a hot dog wrapped in bacon loaded with toppings in a delicious bun.

I don't know where everyone went. We should all be in Tucson by now with nothing really to do until orientation starts in a few days, so why is no one on SDN? Heck, orientation already passed for Phoenix and Shep is still on here. Everyone else must just be slacking off...

Who is going tomorrow to get their computer set up? I am going to try to get there first thing in the morning. I also have to get my CatCard, which I somehow completely forgot to go get.

I was thinking, "hey I should get my computer done too" then i realized "where the heck is the Multi-Disciplinary Labs?" Which led me to the UofA website which led me nowhere. Does anyone know where these elusive labs are? they aren't listed on the campus map. I should probably note that i am terrible at searches so it is probably super obvious.

Thx,
Jon

Haha, I hadn't really thought that far ahead. I just sort of thought, "oh yeah, I'll go get my computer setup," and that I'd just figure it out as I went. I'll see if I can figure it out...

In the email it says room 3114 (which is the multi-disciplinary lab), so I am going to assume that is near the college of medicine. Maybe I'll swing by admissions and ask them in the morning...

Good interviewing skills today, Jeff. Very conversational and natural.

Love,

The creep in the control room

Did he tell them his MCAT score? That would certainly have put them at ease. "Don't worry ma'am, I got a 39 on my MCAT..."

Awwwwww shucks, faceless ominous black camera hanging over my head watching my every move, you're the best!

Ix-nay on the Cat score-May dude! It became irrelevant once we were all accepted to med school and it's completely against the anti-gunner philosophy that now constitutes my core belief system. Plus everyone knows who I am now and I don't want to be stuffed into the lockers in building 3 with a wedgie :(

Dear anonymous Phoenix SDN lurker friends:
Doctoring classes on Tuesday got you down??? Looking to trade up to a new, shiny Thursday doctoring session (all the cute girls are in that one if you're a guy, and for you ladies I heard that Justin Bieber is a regular SP)???? For one easy payment of FREE you can swap my Thursday for your Tuesday! Awesome!!!!

Seriously, if you don't really care one way or the other it would help a brotha tryin' to schedule research out. Shoot me an email!
Love,
Jeff

I was totally kidding. I know MCAT has long since been irrelevant, but that doesn't mean we should hassle you about your absurd score (absurd = anything higher than me, btw). And honestly, if they weren't stuffing you in the locker for your MCAT, wouldn't they just be doing it for something else?

I know you're kidding man, I just want to make sure other people know it! I need to earn my reputation for being a jerk and not have it given to me on a silver platter. And I too was also kidding- anybody who tries to stuff me into a locker is going to have a pretty nasty surprise when I start to shake and then suddenly morph into Ronnie Coleman.

In all seriousness though, because of those pictures I know that like ten people, Phosphorous and Salt and Lime included thought I was a black man, haha.

Bump to new page :)

I know you're kidding man, I just want to make sure other people know it!

I hope anyone who checks these boards on a regular basis knows that most everything I post on here is me kidding (not that its necessarily funny). In fact, I imagine most of my future classmates will learn quickly that I am rarely serious about anything that doesn't require it.

I need to earn my reputation for being a jerk and not have it given to me on a silver platter. And I too was also kidding- anybody who tries to stuff me into a locker is going to have a pretty nasty surprise when I start to shake and then suddenly morph into Ronnie Coleman.

Haha, is it bad that as I read this my immediate thought was that you were shaking because your nasty surprise was you crapping your pants? In my defense though, dropping a duce and smearing it on your bullies would be a "pretty nasty surprise."

In all seriousness though, because of those pictures I know that like ten people, Phosphorous and Salt and Lime included thought I was a black man, haha.

There are so many semi-racist jokes I could make about this statement, but I won't...I'll save those for my friend who is a 1/16th black, so I don't get a bad reputation.

Speaking of those Ronnie Coleman pictures, where the heck has Erik "The Boat" been? I know he said he was doing a tour around the country, but orientation is THIS week, so shouldn't he be back? ehandber, where are you!?!?!?
