University of Maryland: Baltimore Fall 2013

Is Baltimore a safe place to live? I'm from out of state and don't know the area very well

This comes up all the time. There are definitely certain areas I might stay away from (as in...wouldn't walk alone by myself), but it's going to be like that in almost any "big city" in the Nation. The city is getting better with trying to have better lighting in the area, and there are always cops patrolling around at all times of the day/night. The University area, where generally most of the graduate school buildings are located, is one the safest areas in the city of Baltimore. Also, if you're trying to go from school to home at odd hours, there is a police escort service that you can request.

Sure, you might have to take some extra precautions, such as not walking home while texting with your smart phone, but generally, those are the only crimes that occur around campus. As long as you're smart, and not walking by yourself at night, I would say Baltimore is safe.

Interviewed on Saturday and had an awesome experience! The faculty and current students were so warm and welcoming and even though I was extremely nervous going in I felt totally relaxed and at home by the end. The interview process makes for a kind of long day but it also gives you a really good feel for the school and I didn't feel like any of it was meant to trick me. It went by a lot faster than I expected and now Maryland is definitely my first choice!

I'll be coming from out of state as well and was wondering what's the best way to get to campus from BWI? Would it be unwise to fly there the morning of? My interview's scheduled for the afternoon and there's an early flight that would leave me about an hour and half to get there from the airport.

I flew in from out of town the morning of, (had to leave for the airport at 4am) and had an afternoon interview. Just make sure to get plenty of sleep the night before. I booked a shuttle from and to the airport from Super Shuttle. I paid $26 each way including tip. Good luck!

There are many options from BWI to UMB. Light rail $1.60 each way (~30-40mins). Taxi, Super Shuttle, Bus. With 1.5hr of spare time, definitely go for the Taxi. I think Baltimore/MD has a law that taxi has to charge u a fixed rate (either $30 or 35).

Out of curiosity, what were your available interview date and time options?

I wonder why the early decision applicants haven't posted their admission decisions ~ makes it seem like no one got in haha

Aww :( now I'm scared. I have a similar GPA but 79 pcat. haven't heard anything yet.

I wouldn't worry too much, I foolishly through in my hat with the best of the best which probably means 5*10^3 gpa's and pcat scores too divine to be transcribe onto paper. I'm hoping my scores a bit more competitive with the general pop....But then again, only a fool trusts to hope.

At lax leaving for Baltimore interview tomorrow! Any other out of states?

Looking back at the last few years of posts for this school, it looks like some decisions are made in early March and last through April.

I'm nervous for tomorrow morning

Sorry to hear that. I was in the afternoon group, and I felt very welcomed. I was lucky enough to have kind student and faculty interviews. Also the applicants here seemed bright. I appreciated that, especially in the group portion.

Haha, I wouldn't go so far as to say that I did well. I just thought everyone was welcoming. I think, if anything, the student interview went well, but the rest was too difficult for me to assess. I think I would be really lucky to end up here. I hope your interview went well, despite the unfriendly crowd! Best of luck!

According to PharmCAS, about 80% of interviewed gets offers. You should be good

Yeah, I saw that too, but I'm not certain. Twenty percent isn't exactly negligible. It's just a matter of the waiting game though, I suppose, at this point.

Yea I dunno never seen 80 percent before

It seems strange to me that 80 people were extended offers but declined, presumably, for another program. Doesn't that seem odd? Perhaps I'm missing something.

That does seem like a lot of people. Their website says that they normally interview an average of 350, but PharmCAS says they estimated 312 last year, so their number of interviews may have been low in 2012.

Just got interview invitation and got confirmed at Feb 18 2012 at 12:30 any one doing this interview date?

I got my invite ten days ago and requested that time but they were full so I'll be there at 8:30.

Does anyone know how long the interview process is? I'm trying to figure out when to book my flight home for. I'm interviewing on 3/1 at 12:30, and the flight leaves at 6pm? Would that be fine? o:

How are you getting to airport? Taxi? BWI? It should end when it's stated. Which is 4 for afternoon right? Unless you want to stay for like twenty minute tour

My flight was at 6:20 pm from BWI and it worked out fine for me. I would suggest calling the cab right after you finish all interviews before you go on tour because cab could take a while to come. In my case, it did.

As a student, what are the benefits of University of Maryland Baltimore? Do you experience a lot of hospital and doctor interaction throughout your four years at the school?

Any response will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
