This is a very stupid question and please excuse my ignorance here on this one guys. I put out an ad to hire a certified ophthalmic technician in my practice. Out of the relatively large number of applicants I also surprisingly had three relatively recent graduates from optometry schools (ODs all within 2 years of graduation) apply. I called all three of them to explain that this was for a COT or tech position and they explained that they wanted to get something to "pay the bills" until they could find part time or full time OD work. Is this usual for the OD grads? I was shocked by this. I am in the DC area.

Big cities and surrounding areas are saturated with OD's. The new school in Kentucky is not going to help matters. You need to be willing to go where the jobs are.

Yup, simple supply and demand. Similar things happened with Pharmacists. If you want to be an OD in a big city, you don't have any connections and you have massive amounts of debt, you made a poor life decision!

This would only be considered common if they hadn't gotten a license yet in your state, otherwise I'd say this is very uncommon.

VA Hopeful Doc, You are kind of a jerk. Every post you make on the optometry forums here makes you come across that way at least.

So I'm bored and procrastinating cleaning the house while my wife is on call for the weekend. I looked at every post I've made in the first 2 pages of threads to see what you're talking about. There are 8 threads including this one that I participated in. Let's review them, shall we?

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...f-certification-in-medical-optometry.1058795/ - I pointed out my experience in VA hospitals with optometry. During medical school I spent 6 months working in the local VA hospital, 1 month of which was with the ophthalmology residents. I pointed out what I observed, nothing more.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/ocular-injections.105603/ - Very old thread where I commented on how amazed I was that everyone was being civil in a scope of practice debate between ODs and MDs.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...etition-to-the-abo-and-the-aoa-board.1046775/ - asking for a link to information about the NBEO coming up with their own board certification plan.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/optometry-is-awesome.1043988/ - I explained my preference for optometrists in my own eye care because they delegate less of the exam to techs compared to MDs. I'm beginning to see that jerk patten emerging.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/can-reading-glasses-really-help-myopia.900168/page-2 - Repeating what my OD told me about myopic progression slowing as you get older.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...rtists-illegal-for-optometrists.849453/page-2 - Explaining the timeline for obtaining an unrestricted medical license in my state, countering what an ophthalmologist was saying as he/she attempted to show why ODs shouldn't be allowed to do injections.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/how-is-the-job-outlook-is-optometry-worth-it.1013575/ - Inquiring as to whether or not a given poster believes there is an oversupply of optometrists. Not even in an unkind way compared to how I brought up that point in this thread.

Seriously, I make one sarcastic comment and all of a sudden I'm a jerk in every thread I post in?

Anyone can cherry pick posts. On the ABCMO thread you were a jerk to a pre-optometry student. All they said was that they thought ODs worked at VA Hospitals, and you replied in a somewhat jerk fashion.

Cherry pick? That's every OD post I've made in the last 6+ months.

As to that post, please explain both how what I said was in a "jerk fashion" and then how you would have said it?

But I thought there was no OD oversupply <sarcasm>

That's why KHE's job offer thread has been silent for days. Don't worry, I see the sarcasm sign. There is an oversupply issue, but there are still jobs out there. Also, for the record, I don't think VA's post in the medical certification thread was rude at all, in fact I found it helpful, as I have many of his/her other posts.
