Which one would you choose and why? Which one provides more tech help? Is Vons/Safeway generally not that busy (around 100-150 rx/day)? Thanks for sharing your inputs!
The pay at Safeway is a little bit lower than Wal-Mart. If you can get a Safeway store that does about a 120/day, then it might me alright. Remember though, at that volume you will have a technician from Monday to Friday from about 10-7 pm. You will not have any weekend help, and that's when it can get hectic. Even doing 60 rxs on a Saturday, without counter help, answering telephones, and helping out customers in the OTC aisle can be overwhelming. Also you have do to 2 12-hr shifts every 2 weeks, so that can be tiring as well. Pharmacists at Safeway also count their own prescriptions, so in essence you're a tech and verifier at the same time. You will work for the money you are earning. If Wal-Mart allows you to be a pharmacist, then go with Wal-Mart. It's a paycheck after all.

Exactly on the money. Stay away from Safeway. I say this after working two long miserable years for them. Wal-Mart is bad but at least they have a chance of being around when you retire. Safeway is a sinking ship that will not make it much longer. I think in 10 years they will be completly out of business.
I could see Target, Rite Aid, and Albertsons/Sav-on, and Safeway all going away in 10 years.
mountain maybe Pharmacy or rather retail just isn't for you- you are the biggest sour grape on here EVER! So Safeway was miserable for you huh? Gosh doing 100 scripts a day must have been torture? Oh wait what's net Mountain are you going to tell us that Safeway is destroying the Pharmacy profession? What horror stories are you going to tell me now- perhaps Safeway had you ringing customers at the register which you believe no Pharmacist should do? Or are you going to tell us that Safeway only gave you a tech 2 days out of the week and you had to run the Pharmacy all by yourself?Exactly on the money. Stay away from Safeway. The only one I see is Albertsons/Sav on- they sold out on their Jewel Osco/ stores to CVS- their supermarket division has been closing stores nation wide- so I think Albertson/Sav on will be gone as a company all together.I could see Target, Rite Aid, and Albertsons/Sav-on, and Safeway all going away in 10 years.

If any of you have been listening to Mountains' rants- specifically about CVS- this is proof that Mountain is just not made out for Retail!
Mountain please get a job in hospital and do us all a favor and leave retail. You have worked for what both Safeway, Wal-Mart and also Walgreens and I bet your performance was just horrible for all those locations? What's the matter you just too slow or are you just not a peoples person? How is SafeWay ran like a production company? The supermarkets are ideally far slower than your CVS and Walgreens- give me a break. If you couldn't handle a supermarket chain that should be a good indication that Retail is not made for you. So what's your definition of Pharmacy retail- filling 3 prescriptions an hour with a bunch of techs standing around doing nothing- while you sit on your fat butt and read the newspaper and get paid at least 60hr?- Get out of the fantasy world Mountain, better yet come back to earth we miss you here- because you are really living on another planetI am not made out for the retail YOU like working in. I am a Pharmacist not a cog in a big prescription factory throwing presciptions out as fast as possible or some trained monkey pressing the verification button as fast as possible. According to statements you have already made your definitin of a good Pharmacist is one who can fill as many prescriptions as possible with as little staff as possible while doing as many BS tasks as possible. If you are happy with this then I feel sorry for you. This is not practicing pharmacy. This is distributing drugs as fast as possible.
Safeway is the CVS of the grocery world. You would be right at home there.

When did I ever say that how fast you feel a prscription determines how good of a pharmacist you are? I merely said that in Retail you have your high and low volume stores. My store happens to be in the 4100 to 4400 a week range- and all I can do is work my job to the best of my ability. Is it going to change anything if I cry and say gosh my store is busy? See the difference between you and I Mountain is that I can work in any type volume- I have done slow stores- medium volume and busy stores. You on the other hand cry and bitch if you do any type of "work". /you just want to sit on your butt an d read a paper and think doing 50 to 100 scripts a day is all a pharmacist should do. I am so glad we dont have people like you working for our company. I just would like to know how many different Pharmacies have you worked for? You already mentioned 3(Walgreens, Safeway, and Wal-Mart)- I am almost certain you worked for other chains and bitched about them too. I am being honest retail just isn't made out for everyone and apparently you can't handle Retail instead you want to point the finger at CVS-Walgreens-Safeway and Wal-Mart and say they are the reasons why you didn't have any success with those companies. You are a complete failure and I hope you are not working in retail today. You are merely a paycheck pharmacist plain and simple. I doubt that you ever been a P.I.C of any pharmacy. Why don't you open up your own Pharmacy? Every chain has a pharmacist like you- one that is plain worthless and just works because the company needs a registered pharmacist at a specific location just to comply with the law. The company would never hire you as a P.I.C- the techs frown are call- in when they know you are schedule to work. Customers complain that you are rude and slow- now did I just a paint a perfect of you or what?Seriously what is with you? Every response you have is about prescription volume. In your your pea sized, brain washed mind is how fast and how many prescriptions a Pharmacist can fill in a shift the sole criteria for how good a Pharmacist they are? CVS has done a bang up job brainwashing you! Do you really think this is all there is to being a good retail Pharmacist? It must be because that is all you ever talk about. I feel so sorry for you. CVS got to you fast and early to warp your mind this bad. Sheese you talk about being on another plant.....you are in another solar system!
How about Safeway had conditions that were unfavorable to saftly and effectively practice good pharmacy. You obviously have no idea what practicing good pharmacy is so I am not even going to try and explain it. As bad as Safeway was they were a 100 times better than CVS.
You are perfect for CVS. A brain washed drone who only cares about filling as many prescriptions as fast as possible with as little help as possible. Keep pushing that verification button as fast as you can Rxnupe! Keep that machine running and be a good little mindless drone!

Reading your posts it is very clear what you consider a pharmacist to be: a dispensing machine, nothing more. You may be a licensed pharmacist but you are not a member of the profession by means, you are working against the profession. I hope you come to realize this one day or at the very least leave the profession, we have no use for you.
Lol I am working against the profession because I actually work and don't complain if I am doing 100 scripts a day or a 1000 scripts a day? Guys get a grip. You guys most think all Pharmacies should be capped at no more than 10 scripts an hour- with unlimited tech help yet still get paid a six figure salary. I that the reform you want? So I take it you guys think that any Pharmacist that works in a high volume store is nuts and is going against the profession because they are allowing themselves to fill too many prescriptions. I guess by your reasoning any MD that works at an ER in a big city where they see hindreds a patient a day is doing his/her profession a disservice because MD's shouldn't see that many people in a day. Like I said both of you are just not made for Retail- especially you Mountain- you are an embarrassment to the industry.Reading your posts it is very clear what you consider a pharmacist to be: a dispensing machine, nothing more. Let me blow another one of your ridiculous analogies out of the water. In a busy inner city ER there isn't one freaking Doctor seeing 600 pts a day you idiot! However in a busy CVS there is one Pharmacist filling 600 prescriptions a day.
I find it very disturbing you are actually out there working in a Pharmacy. I weep for the profession. If you are the future we are all screwed.
Putting 600 prescriptions in bags isnt the same as doing a complete medical assessment of 600 patients and coming up with a treatment plan and implementing it
Speak for yourself at my location on Mondays, and Tuesdays and end every other Wednesday there are 3 Pharmacist- one works 7 to 4- the other 10 to 8 and the 3rd 1 to 9- then obviously the overnight from 9 pm to 7am- every store in my district that i doing 600 a day or 3000 a week has similar overlap. If you district has as store doing 600 a day(highly unlikely) with just one Pharmacist a day then you need to speak to your Pharmacy Sup. I keep repeating these things because you are a big LIAR. Didn't you say you don't even work for CVS- yet you know so much about it. Also, at Parkland hospital there's never fewer than at least 80 to 100 people in the waiting room at any particular time. Many of them wait literally 4 to 6 hours minimum and yes those ER doctors are seeing tons of patients- thank God they don't bitch like you do.AGAIN, Rxnupe you keep repeating the same ridiculous points that everyone can see through but you. Why are you solely focused on prescription volume? That is all you talk about. Over and over you repeat the same BS. "If you can't handle the volume your not made for retail. "STFU and just do the work your getting paid 6 figures." "All you want to do is sit around and do 100 scripts a day." It is because you work for CVS. They brain washed you into thinking about nothing but volume. Nothing but fill as many scripts as you can as fast as you can. You are like a broken record. Over and over, volume, volume, volume. I hate to break this to you but how many prescriptions you fill in a shift has nothing to do with how good a Pharmacist you are. It has nothing to do with how well you practice pharmacy. As mentioned earlier you are not a Pharmacist. You are a human dispensing machine. A cog in the prescription mill and nothing more. You are sad and clueless my young little friend.

Lol, everything is about volume with you. And 'not complaining' does not make you high and mighty, it makes you a toolbag. Sure, sometimes we just have to suck it up and get the job done but advocating for better working conditions and more time for patient care is a good thing for the profession. I know, I know, I said "profession" which is something you care nothing about.
Just because a pharmacist wants time to offer better patient care and make the clinical interventions that spacecowgirl mentioned above does not mean they do not belong in retail....no matter what you have been told.
I know your kind and I despise you.

Errr what? I floated this weekend in retail and 200 scripts kicked my butt. I filled them correctly and quickly, but I saw probably 20% of them could have had some clinical interventions (mostly minor) that I had to ignore because there was no time (macrodantin in a 92 year old, tons of HCTZ 50 mg doses, lots of money saving opps, inappropriate abx for recurrent OM). I basically had to turn off my MTM brain to focus on filling the scripts correctly. Granted, I'm rusty so I might be slower than a regular retail RPh, but I certainly did not put my schooling to use. I got to pee once. I also did eat lots of Easter candy.
Ok- I send you this question in another forum : this Pharmacy here is a close as you can get to the model of a Pharmacy that we learned in school: http://www.doughertys.com/ However, this Pharmacy does 1000 scripts in a 12 hour time frame- keep in mind this pharmacy doesn't have any Ready fills, PCI calls etc- so the fact they are actually busier than my store because when I do 1000 it's over a 24 hour period- are these Pharmacist dispensing monkeys??? By the way it was YOU Mountain who made the analogy that if you are doing high volume you are nothing more than a "dispensing monkey" but you worked for Safeway which is traditionally low vlume yet you blamed them for your demise. Once again- does Dougherty's have it right or are they idiots for doing a 1000 a day even though that independent is busier than the majority of Walgreens and CVS's in my area. This is the point Rxnupe is incapable of understanding. To him all that matters is turning the brain off and cranking out as many prescriptions as possible as quickly as possible. We are supposed to be practicing pharmacy not worring that we are not meeting our answer the phone metric or all the other BS CVS has that has nothing to do with the practice of pharmacy.

Actually when you work at Safeway(Vons) anything over 150 prescriptions can be considered working under danger conditions with one pharmacist and one technician working especially when the phone is ringing off the hook, the counter is busy, flu shots need to be given, and Secret Shoppers need to be attended to. Remember at Safeway, pharmacist count their own prescriptions and verify the rx at the same time. If your tech doesn't know how to type properly, your workload just tripled.

Yes I have been there and they don't have 6 Pharmacist and 20 techs there at one time- so let's cut the B.S and besides if they had 6 Pharmacist and 20 techs they would be breaking the law since the state of Texas allows 2 techs per Pharmacist- but that's another issue.YOU are the one hung up on volume, not me. I give a rats butt about how many prescriptions you or anyone else fills. The issue is having the proper amount of staff to handle the volume you do. One Pharmacist checking 500 to 600 scripts in a shift is dangerous. There is no possible way you are doing anything but pushing them through as fast as you can regardless of any problems. The core issue is the ****ty staffiing CVS allows AND the volume they expect you to do. You are nothing more than a cog in a machine at CVS.
Have you ever been to Dougherty's? They have six pharmacists working and at least 20 techs and clerks. No comparison at all to the hell hole CVS is.

By the way, I think it's total B.S that you know of a Pharmacy in which one Pharmacist is doing 600 on a daily basis- total bunch of crap. Why don't you list that store that does and I will prove to you that you are a LIAR or that it's because of the schedule those Pharmacist CHOOSE to work. On my Monday's where I do no less than 800 on a slow day there's always 3 Pharmacist and the 2 other super busy stores in my district have 3 Pharmacist overlap as well- you are a LIAR!!!
ok now we are moving somewhere since we work in the same area- now I would like to know what CVS you are talking about that the Pharmacist does 500 to 600 scripts a day with little to no help? Preston and Forest? Don't back up now- and as I mentioned in previous forum you show your real colors by going ballistic in a FORUM of all places- calling me a *****, an idiot and using other innuendos with the CAPS on just shows how unstable you are. If you get this angry over someone you don't even know then I can only imagine how you deal with an irate or a needy customer? Didn't you say you are some type of manager? I mean come on who would hire you to be in position to run a pharmacy or hire other pharmacist when you can't even have a civil internet conversation with out blowing up. Mountain- i already got 4 yes 4 private pm's of people telling me how irrational and over the top you are by blowing up in this manner- gosh please take your BP meds and calm down. You do not pay attention much do you? Tell me again what is the Pharmacist to tech ratio in Texas? Two you say...really? They just changed the law....IN 2001 so I can see how you are confused and not up to date with the new changes. Oh wait in 2001 you were probably in junior high. Better read up on that law idiot.
I said 20 techs AND clerks you *****. I am not sure if you are familar with a little website called the Texas State Board of Pharmacy? You may want to check it out and see about that Pharmacist to tech ration and brush up on Pharmacy law since you are lacking.
DOUGHERTYS AIRWAY PHARMACY License # 3246
Licensed Pharmacist = 9
Licensed Technicians = 31
You have to be one of the biggest idiots who has ever posted on here! I know the Pharmacy Manager there and I used to work just down the street.
Gosh you are right I AM THE LIAR. After all you are so smart an knowledgeable that it couldn't possible be you that is wrong....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I crack myself up. You need to go away and stop making a fool out of yourself.
I vote we move all of this into the CVS sucks megathread. We already have a big forum on it already.
Nupe: We weren't even discussing CVS we were talking about Wal-Mart vs Vons and you immediately jump on Mountain and hijack the thread. For someone who tries to act like Mountain is unstable you sure enjoy provoking him. Also, don't act like you're all super calm and whatnot now because I do recall putting a nice long post on another thread about how you need to calm down and act more professional since you are representing CVS, because you were yelling and calling people names and slandering people's ability to be a pharmacist.
Mountain: Calm down a little bit because it is harder to take you seriously when getting upset. I've seen the same things over and over on multiple threads and do you really think Nupe is going to get your point of view NOW? What makes this time so much different? Honestly this is more amusing than anything else but this train wreck has to stop... Or at least move it into one thread
Maybe I'm just feeding some trolls instead...who knows? I still think this should go to one central thread so this crap isn't hijacking other threads into a battlefield...
If it's in print, it's libel. Not sure if libeling is a word though.
Jabber I respect the fact that you are trying to bring some peace and calm into this situation- however look at Mountain's trail yes the topic was about Safeway vs Walmart- again Mountain rips Safeway for whatever personal reason(s) it seems that where ever Mountain worked and didn't do well it was always the companies fault. I still stand by my point that Retail isn't for everyone and Mountain fits the bill as someone who shouldn't work Retail. Retail is obviously a customer oriented field and if Mountain attacks me(a person he doesn't know from Adam's house cat) how do you think he reacts with customers with insurance issues or with customers overall? He's called me an idiot- a *****- has used expletives he took my bait and fell right into the trap. I told him(Mountain) that I would expose him and clearly from his tirades and outbreaks he can't handle pressure nor criticism.I vote we move all of this into the CVS sucks megathread. We already have a big forum on it already.

Hey Mountain since I think we both work in the DFW- how about we meet up for lunch or better yet you can be an invited guess and come visit my Pharmacy. and I will show you that at my store which does between 800 and 1000 between Mon and Friday that we have plenty of Pharmacy overlap and you will see many smiling technicians and customers- perhaps this will change your mind about CVS-.
I really don't think you would dare say those words to me right in front of my face now would you?
