You can't be an dentist in the Army unless you can obtain a US license to practice dentistry, which I believe requires you to complete an advanced standing program at a US dental school. In addition, you must be a US citizen to be an officer in the US military. All military dentists are commissioned officers. You mentioned joining as a dental assistant, which is possible if you are willing to enlist. It would help you obtain a citizenship (more info here: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/a/citizenship.htm) after serving for at least one year. If your ultimate goal is to be an Army dentist, it would be possible to enlist in the Army National Guard and serve as a dental assistant. This would allow you to obtain your citizenship and complete an advanced standing program at the same time, since the National Guard is only part time service. Once you have completed the program and have your citizenship, you could commission into the Army dental corps to serve as a dentist.

Just to let you know what you are getting yourself into, here is some basic information about the National Guard. You will serve part time (1 weekend per month and 2 weeks per year) for a period of 6 years. During that time, you may be tasked to deploy, possibly for up to 4-12 months at a time, so you need to be comfortable with that possibility. Even if you are in the middle of an advanced standing program, if you get orders to deploy, you must go. Most dental schools would understand and would hold your spot for you until you return.

Here is a link to contact a National Guard Recruiter: http://www.nationalguard.com/car

Your recruiter will make sure you qualify, and try to find you a unit with a vacancy for the job you want. When he asks what job you are interested in, tell him "68 Echo - Dental Specialist". I have included a job description below. You could also do any other job the recruiter has available that interests you.

"Dental care is one of the health services provided to Guard personnel all over the world. Dental Specialists assist dentists in the examination and treatment of patients, and help manage dental offices. Additional responsibilities may include cleaning patients' teeth, assisting with the administration of anesthesia and x-rays, and performing maintenance on dental equipment."

Let me know if you have any other questions. It is important to know as much as possible before you sign up.

You can also join the Army Reserve.

I work with a foreign trained dentist that joined the Army as a dental assistant. She never went back to dental school to finish up her degree. She keeps saying she will, but life got too busy for her and that keeps getting postponed.

Best of luck.

You're probably the best person to ask...can military entrance qualify a person for a green card? Or does the green card process need to be done prior to enlisting? What I do know is that only citizens can be officers.

Active Duty dentist/officer must be a citizen. I am not sure what the status must be for enlisted. I also know there is more leeway in the resreve - think you can be an officer with a green card. Recruiter will be your best info source. Just google national guard for the state you are in or army reserve and call the number. Either one have dental personnel.

You are correct, every officer in the US military must be a US citizen so that would include each and every active duty dentist. Active duty dental assistants and hygienists do not need to be US citizens. All you need is a green card for eligibility. Hope this helps!!
