I was just unexpectedly accepted to Temple 4 days ago and need to make a decision in 2 days. I already have an acceptance at WVU and am wait-listed at GWU. I need some help with a few questions I have about Temple and Philly...

1) Safety in North Philadelphia: How do students study late...especially for anatomy? Where do most students live that is considered safe but not a super long commute?

2) Public transportation: Is it reliable? Is it safe? Would I be fine not having a car?

3) Tuition: WVU is $49k/year, GWU is $50k/year (plus living expenses of DC), Temple is $54k/year. Is it cheaper to live in Philadelphia than DC? Is Temple worth the tuition?

4) Is there a "Temple Class of 2016" thread or "Temple Class of 2015" so I could check them out for help?

Thanks!!!

FYI, you posted this thread in the 2012-2013 SSD area.

1. If you're a guy, you can probably take the subway home late at night. If you're a girl, you should find someone to escort you lol. I've been hit on several times by weirdos in the subway stations, but I've never been robbed or mugged in Philly. Some kids live behind the med school in newly-built houses, if commute is an issue for you. Most people tend to live either in Center City by the Broad Street Line (BSL) or in Manayunk/Roxborough (more suburban, would probably need a car unless you want a long commute).

2. Don't bother with a car until your clinical years. You'll get along fine with public transportation if you live in Center City or even University City/Old City.

3. Philadelphia is cheaper than D.C., and I think that Temple has a slightly better reputation than GWU. Temple also has new facilities. BUT you can only consider Temple vs. WVU right now since you can't guarantee yourself a spot at GW. I don't know much about WVU, only that their undergrad has a reputation for parties lol.

Thanks for the help! And I'm a girl...

You're right my decision now is between Temple and WVU...and I'll choose Temple. But I'm torn as to whether or not make a final push for GWU. I still have a pretty significant update I haven't sent and more physicians for references including an alum. I was planning on sending all that to Temple, but I received the acceptance before I started on it.

As for the double post, one of the other users suggested I create a new thread, so I took her suggestion. I'm new to this and have really no idea what I'm doing...

Thanks again for taking the time! Good luck with you med school adventure...and I like penguins!
