Just curious. You all guys speak abt medical schools for in Europe for americans. Whats the deal abt dental school. Dont Americans go to Europe for Dentristry. And how hard is it to get in a european dental school and then settling down there in Europe. (who wanna come back and redo the dental school again in US, he he he).

There is an international dentistry forum where you might find more answers, but in general, it probably depends on the country. Until a few years ago in Italy, dentistry was a specialty of medicine so you had to go to regular med school. Now it's a separate degree.

I would imagine that foreign student admittance policy changes for every school and country.

Poznan Univ of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland has a 5 year dds (dental) program for english speaking students. Check our www.mdprogram.com, thats the US office website.

Hi all, I am a periodontist from INDIA.. my better half is moving to Paris for a year, does anybody know about the eligibility to practise in Paris.. I dont know the french language, can I study there in English.. Please, please help.. Its a question of my marriage or my career otherwise... Help !.

Hi.
I know that 4 medical universities in Poland offer 5-year studies in dentistry conducted in English: Szczecin, Poznan, Wroclaw and Lodz.
Check this page for the links to these universities:
http://www.geocities.com/magdaemily/medical_studies.html
And here you can read more about dentistry at PAM in Szczecin (you can apply directly to the univ):

After graduation you won't have any problems with working as a dentist in all EU countries, lately many graduates of Polish dental ( and medical ) schools go to work to UK, Scandinavia, France, Germany and others.

And here is a link to a nice short movie made by Polish students of medical university in Szczecin for the local division of IFMSA - Poland (International Federation of Medical Students' Associations):

I'm thinking about working as a dentist in Great Britain or Germany. So if I finish the dentistry in Poland or other EE countries I will not have to take any extra courses or exams to work in these countries?

Sorry, but all dentistry studies are conducted in French, and you'd have to provide proof of language proficiency (or sit a special exam).

Poland is a member of EU so I'm rather sure that the Polish diploma is equal to the British or German one, so you won't have to take any exams there to get permission to work as the dentist.

HI,
I am pretty sure that your diploma is not recognized in France. I am sorry to tell you that in order to practice the dentistry in France you have to have an european diploma and citizenship. For confirmation you can contact " l'ordre des Chirurgien-Dentistes".
Good luck and hope that you can find a solution.:)

Ideally, try to do your studies in the country you wish to work! The entrance requirements in Eastern Europe are a joke compared to what one faces in the UK, Scandinavia, France, Spain and Italy. At one point(this is heard from Norwegian medical students in Poland) students had it ridiculously easy to get through the course. Nowadays I've heard it has improved, and incapable students are kicked out in greater numbers.

Still, many hardly speak the local language because the majority of socialising is with "their own kind" and the language training quality varies considerably, hardly a good way to develop dr-patient communication skills.

The schools have less funding and are far more expensive; they are of course partly funded by students coming from western Europe/north America, who are in most part there due to not having been accepted in their home country.

On a side note, the eastern European students often meet very stringent requirements to get accepted, they obviously study there for free and can work there afterwards(many universities require foreigners to sign a contract where they promise to never apply for a position in Poland etc.).

All this having been said, the education itself is most likely up to standard, and it is probably much more up to yourself to make the most out of it, the degree will be accepted most places(although I am unsure of France, I think there has been some discussions around that), but you will most likely have to work twice as hard to get the competitive positions in other countries. A friend of mine(medical student) has one year left and is this summer working at the local hospital here in general surgery in Norway. But she has worked hard to get to that position! Dentists currently have it somewhat easier, but it is common sense to expect that a local graduate would be preferred to one from abroad.

As for getting accepted to dentistry in the rest of Europe; reqs just below medicine(apart from Italy, where they are higher), and in general above everything else. The selection system is heavily dependent on good grades, more so than in the US. Germany used to be an "easy route" as well, meaning easy entry, difficult to get through. I think they have increased their reqs now though.

Best of luck!

Olafo, you are under a misconception. It might be very easy to get through the entrance exam in Central European dentistry schools but getting through the dental program is a dream come true for many as the attrition rates are ridiculously high. This specially applies to the Charles First Faculty of Dentistry which is one of the most reputed programs in Europe but is ridiculously hard to pass.

The Western European schools have a slightly different way of doing it where they make the entrance ridiculously hard and then during the years of dentistry/medical school, very few people fail (of course exceptions such as the French schools exists where the whole concours program can be ridiculously mind-boggling and stressful).

If I were you.. I would apply for dental school in either the UK or Ireland.
