I think that CM had finally accumulated critical mass and a spontaneous nuclear reaction ensued. Critical Mass was not killed by the blast but was exposed to high levels of radiation leaving CM in a state of permanent mutation much like Bruce Banner when someone steals his parking spot at Wal-Mart.
