Besides being medically competent, what other things do you think are important for being a good doctor?

Joking aside, the ability to quickly build rapport with others would be up there, I'd think, for many specialties anyway.

1. Grace under pressure

2. Discipline. You are ontime and you give 100 percent to your work.

3. Competence. You know your stuff. You are an expert in your field and are prepared for whatever situations are thrown at you.

4. Empathy. You understand the limitations of what you can do.

5. The ability to communicate with diverse peoples in the most difficult of situations with humility. No arrogance. The ability to look people in the eye and tell it like it is. A straight shooter.

Super villain laugh... I've been working on mine for weeks now in preparation for 3rd year. I'm partial to maniacal cackling myself.

Changed my mind about posting a grossly inappropriate comment relating the two! Cheers :D

Great list but I would add to the point number 5. If you don't have the confidence in yourself and your abilities to look someone in the eye and tell them the truth however difficult then you can't practice medicine.

The knowledge and training boils down to the ability to believe in yourself enough to tell someone they are going to die or live based on YOUR observations and deductions. Believe me, it's not easy. You have to have a ****-load of confidence to do this but your patients will appreciate a "straight shooter."

Conjecture... The list on this post in ****ing bull****. Read the quoted post with my added comments.
