what's better? a more personal LoR or a LoR from a more esteemed writer?

i had this decision to make, and went with the more personal LOR. sure, everyone wants the personal LOR from the esteemed writer, but in the end residencies probably want to know something about you more than the fact that you could manage to get a LOR from a dept chair.

Amen! I had about a 25% no show rate for letters and thats after asking all of my writers in person with a follow up email after 2 weeks.

You know most places want 3-4 letters, so.....
