Hey everyone! I am from California, and I don't normally see many D.O.'s working at the hospitals I've been to, such as UCSF, Kaiser, or other big hospitals. Is this because D.O.'s are scarce in California, particularly in bigger cities or is it because D.O.'s typically go into private practice? Do hospitals prefer MD's over DO's? Ideally I would like to be a physician in a hospital in a city because I like working with a team of professionals and clinicians/researchers in many specialities. I'd rather not work in private practice, so this information would be very helpful for me to decide whether or not I wanna apply DO. Also, do big research hospitals such as UCSF, UCLA, Columbia, etc. have residency spots that allow DO's to apply for? I've read a couple posts and people seem sensitive when it comes to MD vs. DO. I just want some objective comments/information please...no bashing MD's or DO's. Thanks!

DOs work in the same places as MDs. One reason you may not have seen many is that DOs make up a very small percentage of the total physician force in the US (6%?). What you do with your medical career is entirely dependent upon your postgraduate training and your individual work, not your medical degree. I've known DO private practice FPs, a DO neurosurgeon, and a DO director of a major ED (just to throw those few examples out there). Haven't met any in research; but, then again, I haven't looked.

Usually as techs in large veterinary clinics, unless there is a middle management position open at the neighborhood Burger King.

Occassionally a spot at an auto parts store opens up and then DO's are all over that like cheese on a cracker.

same thread open in pre-osteopathic.

"where do DO's usually work?"

Hospitals.

I don't normally see many D.O.'s working at the hospitals I've been to, such as UCSF, Kaiser, or other big hospitals.

And you're not going to see "many DOs" anywhere in the world, except at osteopathic hospitals. There's only 1 DO per 20 MD's in California. You expect to see 5 DO's sitting round a lunch table in the UCSF cafeteria? Slim chance of that, they are diluted by the law of numbers.

Thanks for SOME of these answers. As I stated earlier, I didn't want any bashing...and I assumed that meant no sacarsm as well. My main question was just WHY I have yet to see a DO work in a big hospital (and yes, I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR QUITE A WHILE), but many more in private offices. I know that MD's and DO's work side by side...but I was just wondering why it seems uneven in the large hospital vs. private setting in regards to DO's. I am seriously considering DO's because I like the philosophy and I have little to no regard as to what the last two letters of my degree is as long as I get the SAME OPPORTUNITY (key words) when it comes workplace choice, especially in urban settings. That was my question...not whether or not DO's work in hospitals. Why are some people so damn insecure about being a DO that they feel the need to response to every DO question with sarcasm and defensiveness?

Where they are is related to the number of schools and residencies as well. There are quite a few in Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma and Florida

Jan Munson, DO

Doris Tan, D.O.

She completed medical school at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine before training in Family Practice. After ten years of clinical family practice and academic teaching, Dr. Tan completed a second residency in psychiatry at UCSF Fresno. Dr. Tan is Board Certified by both the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians and the American Osteopathic Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Sorry about the long post, but it was soo sooo easy to find DOs in California that I had to post them. You could porbably figure that many of these specialties require a hospital for the doc. Which cities and zip codes match up with the institutions you are looking for I don't know.

hoberto,

Your post makes me wonder....
how did people find anything before the internet? Before the internet, to find what you posted and type it up would have required a library and 2 assistants.

Well, probably you would just need to get a copy of the AOA directory.

The odd thing is that so many can't seem to find anything even with the internet.

I don't think it is that people 'can't seem to find anything even with the internet.' I think the problem is in laziness. It is way easier to ask a question & have people answer it for you rather than put the work into researching it on your own.

Which brings up an important aspect of being a physician...You are NOT expected to know everything, but you damn well better know where you can find the need info. Laziness in regards to doing your own research is going to be a huge problem in this profession.

Hoberto,

I don't know if that list really supports your claim. The list includes many, many "specialists" in urgent care-family practice, OMM, psychiatry, peds, OB/GYN, all of whom are likely to be in private practice.

They may be affiliated with some hospital, but that doesn't make them hospital staff. How can we know the difference?

I am not trying to point out the lack of opportunities for DOs. In fact, I would like to see DOs everywhere that we see MDs and in more equal numbers. Realistically, though, is there currently an acceptance of DOs at allopathic research hospitals?

Can anyone find a DO on the staff of a major research hospital? Or even a clinical faculty of an allopathic med school? It's not that I don't want to consider an osteo hospital, but I live in the Northeast and if I wanted an academic position as a DO, that means moving to Maine, south Jersey, or Long Island.

Krazykritter,

I hate to point it out, but you have just called everyone who uses SDN lazy. We all use it to find information that is difficult to find elsewhere or to which access is limited to certain people. I don't think there is anything wrong with that.

As someone who is new to thinking about DO school (no, I did not just find out that I got a 26 on the MCAT), I have no idea where to find information on how DOs actually practice. I have seen the AOA and AACOM websites, but I didn't find them very helpful. Most of the info that I have so far is from the stickies at the top of this forum.

I think people should feel free to help each other out by answering even the most mundance questions without fear of criticism...

It's not that I don't want to consider an osteo hospital, but I live in the Northeast and if I wanted an academic position as a DO, that means moving to Maine, south Jersey, or Long Island.

I can assure you that DOs work everywhere. If you're gung ho about working in an academic setting, it is more than achievable. In fact, I'd be willing to bet there is less competition since it generally pays less. You just need to have the credentials. If that means that you do a fellowship heavily based on research in your particular field after residency, then so be it.

Here are 2 examples:

http://www.uihealthcare.com/depts/med/emergencymedicine/bio-crussi.html

http://www.uicomp.uic.edu/erres/main/rd.htm

I'm sorry it's slanted towards EM, but that's my current interest, so I don't waste time looking up other specialties for people that aren't me.

Thanks, Electric. That is exactly what I've been looking for - the reason is that I'd really like to shadow one of them. Now if only I can find someone similar in the NYC area...

Thanks, too, for your advice in my "salaries" thread.

Thank you DrBuffet...that was EXACTLY the question I was asking. While there may be a few DO's on the staff of a major research hospital, I wonder if DO's typically have the same opportunities at MD's. I have no doubt that it can be done. Hell, you can do anything you want and anything can happen...but some routes to get where you want to be are easier and some are harder. Sure, DO's work everywhere. But I'd prefer to work in a major hospital in an urban setting and it seems as if DO's tend to work in more rural areas or private offices. Is that more by CHOICE, or by CIRCUMSTANCE (that certain communities/areas are more accepting of DO's)??

I have no idea what field you're at all interested in, but I was feeling nice and decided to do a quick search for NY.

http://www.bimcem.org/
Click on physicians and then faculty, and you should find Paul DeSandre, DO.

http://directory.mssm.edu/faculty/facultyList.php?deptid=12&showdept=false

And an Anesthesiology for good measure:

This search literally took me 5 minutes, so it's not like I was struggling and stretching to find DOs in academic settings. The following website should help your own personal search:

Electric...you are awesome! It's great to see how many allopathic residencies take in osteopathic applicants

I just want to make sure that there isn't a misunderstanding. Those are faculty members.....not residents. But yes, many, many allopathic residencies take DO applicants every year.

Thank you so much. I had no idea there were so many. I work at Columbia and spent an hour or two looking on the Columbia website (thinking my connection would make me more likely to get someone to say OK), but to no avail.

You don't know how much you have helped me. If there is such a thing as karma, you'll get those 5 minutes back and then some...:)

I can't help but slightly believe in Karma, so thanks.

I am most definitely not calling everyone who uses SDN lazy. I was merely saying that it is laziness to not try to search Google or (god-forbid) SDN itself, for the info you are looking for. Asking if DO's can practice in hospitals is certainly not a novel idea & clicking on the search SDN forum tab would have provided you w/ plenty of information.

In the future when you are a MS III or IV or rotations & your attending tells you to present a case on Monday about Nonsurgical Management of Splenic Ruptures...you are not going to go around asking people to do your work for you. You absolutely will have to learn to use the resources on the web to find facts & figures along with the history & recommendations for management so that you can present an intelligent case.

To no avail in what sense? You couldn't find anyone, or no one was willing to help?

Here's someone from Columbia:

The question was never about whether or not DO's can practice in hospitals. It was to explain WHY the numbers of DO's in major urban teaching hospitals are so low compared to DO's in rural areas or private offices.

Wow...really splitting hairs on this subject, huh? In the future try the search function. That's all I'm trying to say. When you do the research yourself you will learn & remember things better.

Thank you, Jimmmmy. Yes, that is what I meant. Although I suppose that topic has been discussed before too.

Maybe we should start banning all people who bring up old topics and questions. Better yet, we should make everyone do Medline searches on there topics before they post, and use proper references!

Oh wait, I forgot, I'm not doing completing a clerkship - I'm on a website.

Ok, Ok. I get it. I think that the search button is a useful tool. I didn't even start this thread - rather my intention was to add something to it.

I would really like to start discussing how we can change the present situation for DOs in the US. I see the numbers and I don't like what I see. Further, I think it is only a matter of time before DOs become higher in demand as alternative forms of medicine are becoming more popular. DOs need to capture that trend and run with it. I predict, if DOs play their cards right, that major research hospitals will be begging for them because they will be bringing paying patients in - and that is something all hospitals, large and small, struggle to find.

DOs really need to present themselves as MDs with value added - special training in OMM and a more holistic approach. I think that allopathic medicine is actually too stuck in the past, contrary to the opinions of others (re:AT Still quotes, etc.). The world is far too globalized to limit oneself to the practice of allopathic medicine alone, if allopathic can be described as purely evidence-based. I am a researcher, so I have a huge respect for science, but I am not afraid to admit that there are treatments that work but we don't yet understand.

So I guess this is just a rant about the current state of medicine, not just about DOs. But I think that DOs, even individually, can have a big part in changing this - and benefit from it. I don't think that DOs have to wait for the AOA to do something, either. All it takes is one.

For everyone, if you're looking for a good read on the business of medicine, check out Regina Herzlinger's Market Driven Health Care.

Kritter, truce?

Just wanted to see if I could get a clarification on what you specifically mean by this quote?

If this is what you wanted to know this is what you should have asked. You asked where DOs work and why you don't see them at hospitals.

There are a multitude of reasons why you don't see DOs in major academic positions. The largest is of course, that there are very few DOs to begin with, only 5-6% of all physicians. Those 5-6% are spread very thinly in some regions of the country...so you won't see many in those places.

Another reason is the likelihood of a person staying at their osteopathic institution to do research and teach. So many of the faculty at DO school are MDs, there is some drive to get DOs interested in teaching and research to return to their home schools after residency. These people would be at osteopathic schools earning the same grants and doing the same level of work as their counterparts at UCLA or whatever name institution you like.

A further reason is the difference in education between DO and MD. DO is not as research focused as MD unless you want it. Some MD schools force theses projects and heavily push research over breaks whereas DO schools push students to look at their career options and shadowing. They don't discourage research but it isn't a major focus. Although, as stated in the last paragraph this is changing and more schools are offering DO/PhD programs....it just isn't pushed throughout the curriculum.

Yet another reason is the body of students in each discipline. More students are interested in primary care at your average DO school than your average MD school. This translates to more DOs in promary care. DO schools also tend to have a larger percentage of second or third career changers, who may also have families and lives of their own. These people are not looking to continually advance their career and continue competing for the rest of their lives. By and large, they want to get their degree and support their families.

Another reason is that many DO preceptors and role models are in private practice. They talk up the great aspects of private practice and lead students in that direction. With few role models in large academic centers few students see that as a potential career route. This just breeds more and more private practice physicians, and is a big reason why many DO schools are starting to push research.

If you look at ads for faculty of these large institutions they do list MD or DO degrees. So, DOs are not completely discouraged from applying.

Here are a couple who work at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, a large teaching/academic hospital. You could argue that their offices are in CCF and that they aren't really part of the hospital, I guess.

Robert S. Biscup, DO, MS Orthopedic Surgery
Leonard H. Calabrese, DO Rheumatology
John A. Dumot, DO Gastoenterology
Donald J. Gordon, DO Radiology

Are DOs getting turned away at major research centers? If they were, that'd be a huge lawsuit waiting to happen and we would definitely be hearing about it. If you really want to know more your best bet is to contact the osteopathic school nearest your big hospital of choice and ask for the contact info for their students or staff who have gone on or do work at that hospital.

Just wanted to see if I could get a clarification on what you specifically mean by this quote?

I meant the disparity between the numbers of DOs at research institutions and those in small community-based practices, the numbers of DOs overall, and the numbers in urban areas.

As the above poster stated, people have their own individual reasons for going into one field or the other. I can assure that there are no barricades to a DO practicing wherever and in whatever field he or she wants. Keep in mind that DOs only make up 5-6% of the physician population, on top of the fact that many specifically want to work in underserved areas (often rural).

DrBuffett,

I have absolutely no problem w/ you or whoever the OP is. At some point you will understand that (at times) it is really frustrating to have to explain to people who are applying to our medical schools what the DO profession is all about. It is a whole different story with patients b/c 99% of people (even in states that have lots of DO's) don't even know what the initials of their physician are. There are plenty of applicants who don't consider our profession 'second-rate' doctors & use DO as a backup.

I'm not saying that you or the OP fall into either of these categories...hang around SDN for long enough & you will see goofy threads at least once a week. So...good luck applying & don't worry about going DO...you will have the same opportunities as an MD although you may have to work harder than your MD counterpart to prove to 'the good ol boys' that you have what it takes.

You can assure me that there are no barricades? Have you read the stickies at the top of this forum regarding "DO discrimination" and such topics? How about the posters to the "DO salary information" thread who admit that there are certain departments that are clearly "anti-DO?"

I wish that were the case, but I think there are barricades. The factors you mentioned do not account for all of the inequities.

yeah some "barriers" still do exist.....but the posts also have a lot do w/ most pre-meds not having any idea wtf a DO actually is....so some of the questions are understandable....there is a lot of misinformation out there...

Are DOs getting turned away at major research centers? If they were, that'd be a huge lawsuit waiting to happen and we would definitely be hearing about it.

Are women getting turned away from CEO positions? Just because there are no lawsuits does not mean it does not happen. Academia is full of stuck-up, snobby, elitists, a place where where you went to school, what letters are after your name, and who you studied under matters a LOT. Since research is virtually non-existent at most DO schools, I would venture to say this has something to do with why you don't see DOs in major research centers.

I can assure that there are no barricades to a DO practicing wherever and in whatever field he or she wants.

That's the post of the year.

Itselectric didn't get the memo on DO discrimination. He's been drinking too much of the AT STill cool-aid to notice what is going on in the REAL world.

All joking aside, there are some posters here who like to paint a rosy picture of Osteopathy, and I surmise it is to make themselves feel better about their chosen paths. Dr.Buffet, be careful what you believe on these boards because there is a lot of misinformation given out by people who are too defensive about being a DO.

Gotta love people that are so unable to think for themselves that they even steal jokes from other posters and don't even have enough respect to present them in at least a mildly funny way.

"Cool-Aid, huh??

By the way, last I knew there were lawsuits in regards to gender discrimination in the workplace. Call me crazy, but I've even read about them on CNN.

I stand by what I said, because even if there is tiny minority that actively discriminates DOs, how does that prevent me or anyone else from doing whatever they want. I'm not implying that I can just walk into any residency or any job, and i'll get it purely because I'm me.....but who on earth can do that (MD or DO).

I'm saying that through hard work, making connections, and doing the things that provide myself with a number of opportunities will get me to where I want to be. A few closed doors do not negate the hundreds of thousands of open doors - Thus, no barricades. If there were complete barricades, then we'd never see DOs who are radiologists, surgical oncologists, dermatologists, ophthamologists, etc. Fact of the matter is, we do see them working all over the country in a variety of settings.

Best of luck to everyone in whatever degree they go into.

There are not "compete" barricades, but there are barricades nonetheless. Refer to the # of DOs who match into MD derm, rad onc, optho residencies last year.

can't really argue w/ you on that one....they may not be everywhere and all-inclusive...but small (or "in-complete" as you guys are putting it) do exist in some places in some specialties.....it is what it is....

I definitely agre with you. I guess my issue stems from the fact that everyone (especially residency applicants) automatically assumes that the reason DOs are underrepresented in Radiology/Dermatology/etc. is because they are a DO. I think it's very likely that there are a larger percentage of DO applicants that don't have the boards, gpa, research, etc. and thus either don't apply or are rejected. Too often people want to blame extraneous factors for their own failures, when in reality, the reasons often times lie within. There definitely is some level of discrimination in certain fields, but I'm simply saying that you have to factor in the above ideas as to why DOs may not be properly represented in a particular field.

To be honest, I do not have the percentage of DOs that are in these competitive fields across the country, so I just don't know how much or how little they are underrepresented. Knowing that might shed a little more light on the situation.

They work in McDonalds to answer your question. The best ones might be at IHOP.

You hit the nail right on the head. Speaking for myself as a future DO, I have zero interest in research. Never did as an undergrad, still don't as a med student. That was a factor in deciding between schools for me.

And there are certainly ways around the barricades that exist for the minority of residencies that won't look at a DO application. DOs can match into their own derm, ortho, uro, surgery residencies. If you set yourself apart from the rest of your class (MD or DO) with reseach, very high board scores, and great letters from rotations, you'll be competitive for any of those highly sought after specialties if that's what you want.
