Who Else Feels Great

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am so jealous. I can't wait to surprise my co-workers with the revelation that I will be going to Medical School. I have told nobody, and as far as anyone knows I am a "motivated company man".

On the inside I despise every second here. If only I didn't have bills to pay, I'd be out of here immediately. Enjoy your free time, I hear Med School does a fantastic job of eating it up :p

Ditto that. When I give my 2 week notice in June it's going to be a happy day. No one in my office knows either, and I'm not saying anything until then. I just keep disguising my smile as "I'm just a happy guy"...

Determined that I've finished my postbac. The schools that I'm interested in don't need any more coursework. Next class i take will be in medical school!

Also my wife found out she passed her boards. She's now certified!

Done!!!! DONE!!! DONE!!!!! :soexcited:

Officially done for the semester. Very happy. Would celebrate but there's that whole work thing tonight and 7 of the next 9 nights.

But then it's home to visit the family for vacation and being a bum and watching movies for a week straight.

I feel great because I am now officially three quarters of the way through my pre-clinical years. I also scored significantly higher on this last exam as compared to my classmates than I normally do, and this was on an exam I didn't feel as well prepared for as I would have liked. Glad to have this break to re-charge before I push hard from January through June when I will be taking Step I.

I feel fantastic. Despite a turn of events that has broken a seemingly good relationship w/ my girlfriend, I've never felt more alive. Just went through my first two days of shadowing an Ortho Surgeon, learned a ton, and stoked a fire inside that is saying, hell yes, I really wanna do that! En Fuego:boom:

Got accepted to a local school for next semester so I will in fact be able to finish my prereqs in the spring. Next hurdle will be dealing with the registrars to get overrides. Always fun

Got an A in that dang stats programming class that's been driving me nuts. Thought the highest I'd get was an A- So I'm pleasantly surprised.

Today is also the first day of a long awaited vacation from both work and school. So I get to go home an celebrate a late Christmas.

Back home after a week back home with the family. Got a whopping and unexpected (and much needed) sum of money from a grandparent. Also got some new work clothes for the new position from my mom.

The mutts and I all survived the 14 hour drive back home all intact and now I'm having some good, real food, tucked in my comfy king sized bed after a week of cramped little uncomfortable bed, and all set to crash hard with 1 and a half more days off before back to work.

Got my first project for my new position, even though I technically haven't started yet. Pretty excited, a bit nervous too. Doing the background research is interesting. I'm sure there will be plenty of stress and stuff that sucks, but I think I'm going to be pretty happy with this, seems like a good fit for now.

Feb 26th!! That's the day I get to move to my new job on days. Glad to finally have a date, even though I am covering a weekend night shift in march so the new girl isn't stuck working with a coverage person who doesn't know what they're doing.

Happy, I'll be going from working every fri, sat, sun overnight to having pretty much all my weekends free :D

Think I might've gotten the parking thing figured out for work. Should hopefully be able to avoid the bus and getting motion sick along with losing an hour and a half of my day.

Heard from one of our technical specialists that I really impressed my boss and, more importantly, our medical director during our group meeting where I discussed my first project. :) Here's hoping I can keep up that momentum.

So my trusted mentor at school sent me a response to my email to him saying I will match in march
Feels much better hearing that from someone who used to be in a position to make these decisions

Back to thumb twiddling :)

Managed to make a good catch a the free clinic tonight even though I don't have a patient care role. Felt good. Really grateful for the opportunities I've had.

Got kind of a good compliment at work last night. I'm training in my replacement on night shift and tonight will be her last night of training with someone. It will be me, the shift lead, and another person working. I said we needed to get her signed off on monthly maintenance for the hematology analyzer, but she could train with whoever she wanted this last night. She barely let me finish and said, "I'd like to keep training with you tomorrow please. If thats ok, unless you're sick of me or something." I laughed and said, "no that's fine."

So I guess I don't suck at teaching, which is good because I enjoy doing it.

I feel hopeful. I started to get a little hypomanic (self diagnosing here) after i got my MCAT score a week ago and was relieved/ finally had "proof" that maybe I really can become a doctor. But I like to use that energy I felt to start doing things i like and things that will help me get into school.... for the past 6 months I've ONLY been working and MCAT studying. I was initially really down about my job because of all the great patient care/medical jobs I've had, this is the least relevant. Recently I felt all my energy come back, like a barrier had been broken, and I started applying to a million volunteering orgs, signing up for an EKG class (kind of for fun but maybe it will get me a different job later) and thinking about what classes to take next year and where (all my pre-reqs will be done in May). YAY!!! I want to be a busy bee again with a packed schedule!

Looking on the brighter side of things this week

One of our medical directors was down by my desk and stopped to touch base on some stuff for my project she's overseeing. She mentioned that this wasn't necessarily the best first project to give someone because its going to be tricky. Then she mentioned she thought the results could be interesting though and thought it would be a good one for an abstract at a national mtg, if not a paper.

Then I sent a draft of the project outline to this medical director and got the following statement when we met in person to go over it, "this was actually very good for your first time ever writing one of these" and I left feeling pretty positive about things.

She'd had some info she want me to investigate, so I met with some folks in the dialysis center today and wrote up a summary of what I found along with some supporting documents and shot her an email. Got one back a little later that said "I'm very impressed with your thoroughness and initiative. This is really helpful information." and so on.

Plus it might actually get above freezing this week!

And finally, day shift just rocks, even if it involves this night owl dragging her tail outta bed at 530.

Dismal failure in undergrad, leaving 11 years ago with 162 credit hours and a whopping 2.5 GPA. Thought it was a 2.7 but nope, it was a 2.5.

Crunched my numbers a few days ago and offered a sacrifice to the almighty calculator. Peeked through my fingers. Now sitting at 258 credits and *trumpets*...broke through to 3.04 cumulative with 4.0 BCPM! With at least a year of classes left to go but boy, talk about renewed vigor.

It can be done!

So, I grumbled the other day about having two sick pups and $450 in vet bills.

When I had taken the little pup in for that last visit, the vet had mentioned that he'd like to do a nasal swab and see what organisms were in the kennel cough outbreak that was going around. He said that if that vaccine maker approved it, they could send in the swab to the vaccine maker at no cost to me and they'd culture it. He said it would help them get a better handle on what was circulating and the vaccine maker could see what kind of coverage the vaccine had. I told him I was majoring in epidemiology in grad school focusing on infectious disease, so I was all for trying to give them a leg up on getting a handle on this bug. He said great, then he mentioned that if it turns out that the culture grows something supposed to be covered by the vaccine, the vaccine maker would reimburse me for the vet bill. He said that never really happens, and it always grows something else, but it was possible.

When I told my mom about that part later she asked if I though the vaccine maker would actually be honest about what grew. I said it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't disclose that, but the fact that they wanted swabs sent in at least meant they would use that information to hopefully make better vaccines.

So vet left a message on my phone to get in touch with him. In the message he said that the little pup's culture grew a parainfluenza virus, one that's covered by the nasal vaccine Ellie got recently and the injectable one she had within the last year. So they vaccine maker was going to reimburse me for her vet bill. I'm listening to the vet bill and about fell over. I was thinking, maybe I could see if we could swab the big pup too and get his bills reimbursed. Well, the message kept going and the vet said that even though Bandit wasn't tested "they've also agreed to cover Bandit's vet bills, and if you can bring in his bill from the emergency vet service they will pay that as well." :uhno:

So, that's really awesome to get that money back, because things were really tight this month. Also, pretty awesome of the vaccine maker to be honest about it.

So not sure if this is a great or just weird -

I finally threw away all of my undergrad books I had been saving - it was strange seeing my genetic text and o Chem experiment book hit the trash

But it felt kinda good to purge
And it means we are that much closer to moving! :)

I'm really liking my new job so far.

Got my first project outline approved by the medical directors. I was told I'm off to a great start in my role and that they're seeing lots of things they like about the way I'm tackling things. Might have a really great opp. to get an advanced quality fellows certification related to this as well.

It's Friday, what's not good about Friday when you don't have to work weekends anymore?

I had locked myself out of my bathroom, but after several unsuccessful attempts and a google search I managed to pick the lock and get back in.

This may not seem like a big deal, but I have a med condition where, trust me, it is.

Haha. The race is on between bursting the lock and bursting the bladder!

I have obtained my unrestricted license and signed my contract for next year. My official position is "clinical assistant professor." You can take the girl out of academia....no, actually you can't.

You get to take such cool classes! Is this during a post bacc you're completing? You should take some pics of your sweet metal sculptures.

I generated enough revenue through my Ebay business to almost pay off the CC with med school expenses (3k!)!!! Took a big risk investing in a bunch of inventory this month, and it paid off. :soexcited: Paying off that CC is gonna be a huge weight off my shoulders. :cat:

This class isn't actually affiliated through a school, although I do think a nearby technical college with a welding program offers some artistic metal working classes. I initially took blacksmithing that was offered through my towns community education program, which offers a slew of rec and ed classes for adults ranging from photography to fencing to ballroom dance to baking cookies to making French cuisine to running a business to rescuing baby turtles to maple syruping.

Then I found a place in the town where I commute to for grad school that offers more blacksmithing and also welding metal sculpture among other things. There are places to take glass blowing as well. One even offers something called a "hot date" where you and your date go and get private class for a couple hours and each make your own class piece. All of this found via google searching my interests. Never know what might be available hiding in your community.

I wish I lived in your town. :) We don't have any technical colleges here. I do need to explore my hometown's offerings more thoroughly though. It's nice to see a fellow nontrad premed building time for hobbies into her schedule! I need to work on juggling commitments better. Perhaps attending a once per week non-graded course would be a good start.

It also sounds like dating would be great fun where you are! So much more interesting than dinner and a movie.

To be fair to my hometown, it's the ideal place to run an online resale business. There's a ton of great merch here that would be snapped up by the younger demographic that inhabits big cities! :D
