Why don't catalysts affect the kinetic energy & collisions of reactants in a reaction?

Was working on an AAMC qbank and came upon a question asking about general characteristics shared by all catalysts. It says that catalysts do not induce more collisions among reactant molecules nor do they transfer kinetic energy to the reactant molecules. Why is that? What do catalysts do to lower the activation energy or stabilize the transition state? And what is the transition state?
