#14(?). Pharmacists are the second most trusted professionals in the US :)

Nurses were voted 1st

that is because nurses and pharmacists have the most personal interaction with people.......while the real doctors only do the actual operative work. For instance, a nurse will develop a relationship with the patient while the physician comes in and spends limited time with the patient......same with dentistry.....dental hygenists do all the work, and then the dentist comes in and does a final checkup and quick treatment plan.....or just does operative work.

Perhaps that is somethig cool about pharmacy....lots of personal interaction....but I guess for me it didnt outweigh all the benefits of becoming a dentist. Dont believe me??

Check out this Wall Street Journal article from a few months ago that stated that dentistry was the best profession to get into...Its a great article that pinpoints the exact benefits of going into dentistry (and if Im not mistaken, the entrance requirements for dentistry are the same for pharm school....its a no brainer):

WOW...why are you getting so defensive? Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself why you chose dentistry. Seriously, stop comparing the two professions.

hey.. let's keep the list going.. can anyone think of a #17 to add to the list??

nah, i dont need to convince myself, reality speaks for itself :D.....but it does seem that this thread was created to convince people why pharmacy is the best profession....

I just dont see why anyone would want to be a pharmacist when you could become a dentist when both have very similar entry requirements. But again, thats my personal opinion.....I could never be a pharmacist just as you guys could probably never be a dentist, but I have much respect for your profession.

Anyways, Im done comparing the two.....carry on holding each others hands and singing Kumbya.

1. You can get a job anywhere in the country.
2. It pays well.
3. It's a doctorate degree.
4. You can work part time.
5. Malpractice insurance is $150 per year.
6. Rare on call.
7. Options are plentiful.
8. You can own your own business and have someone else run it.
9. You can own a chain.
10. There are more female students...good for the guys.
11. You get to wear that nifty little white coat. And it stays white.
12. You get to make your old professors squirm when they have come to your pharmacy to pick up their medicine.
13. You get to meet all sorts of interesting people from other states and countries (at least in the two downtown pharmacies where I work).
14. You get to meet a few famous people too. (I got to meet a very rich man recently who's recognizable if you're into sports).
15. Pharmacists can keep a track of all the hot single women who take morning after pills on sundays :p
16. Pharmacists are the second most trusted professionals in the US (after nurses) :)
17. Pharmacy has many different career paths with flexibility to change.

Good job getting us back on track.

I'll add:

18. You get to help people everyday.
19. Jobs are currently plentiful so you can just pack up and leave if you don't enjoy your current place of employment.
20. You get hilarious stories.

Goodbye

hey, i like the different point of views, it is the reason i visit this board... this is one of my favorite threads, i wouldn't call anything here a "pissy match"- everything so far has been constructive criticism/ opinions...
there is nothing fresher than hearing a non-pharmacy students point of view and a lot of times it is closer to reality than some of the glorification of the profession you hear from pharmacy students...

btw, i could not stand being a dentist (no matter how much money and respect people would give me)... you stand all day looking down pples throats, having one sided conversations

You came to the pharmacy forum to state 2 items on a list of why pharmacy is a great profession are invalid. I see no point in this other than to try to antagonize the students. You didn't phrase them in questions even. You just stated matter of fact ma and pa stores are a losing venture, and pharmacists aren't called doctors. I don't see why you'd be surprised at the response you got.

Hey Gravy...what's happenin...

I don't (and I believe most everyone in the pharm forums doesn't) hop onto the med and dental forums and act as though I know how physicians and dentists are trained, what their qualifications are, etc. BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO MAKE SUCH STATEMENTS! But for some reason, it happens on this forum with some regularity. That's all I'm saying. I stand by my "pissing match" statement. ;)

thats a myth that is unproven......anyways, I cant believe you are insulting the jobs of dentists when you guys definitely have the most boring job out of any healthcare professional....this is well known although I know you will try to refute that.

Anyways, im looking in mouths all day, and you're counting pills and directing people to where the shampoo is.....but at least I make 3 X your salary with less hours...

24. Clinical pharmacists do it on the floor.
25. Amcare Pharmcists do it with door closed.

Dentist in my area salary range 100,000 to 140,000
Pharmacist 90,000 to 105,000

you make 1/3 more (average) to be realistic... and some pharmacy duties may not be so exciting but we have more to worry about than teeth... if you are fascinated with teeth, great...

#28 pharmacists can contribute to a wider range of health care fields than most doctoral degrees

take a stab at who #10 is...

Man, I wouldn't normally rip into someone but you're just asking for it.

To me, being a dentist is like taking the health out of health care. When exactly do you regularly deal with:

1. Heart conditions
2. Cancer (other than oral cancer, and that is for Oral Surgeons)
3. Routine health prevention (other than telling your pts to brush their teeth & floss)
4. Renal and GI tract issues and disorders
5. Routine sickness
6. Disease Management

Yes, dentists do occaisionally find oral effects of diseases that affect the entire body. And dentists deal with drug interactions when giving anesthesia to a patient before undergoing a procedure.

But let's be honest, dentists start with:

1. Doing a checkup (mainly checking for cavities, gingival loss/disease and the rare oral based disorder)
2. Cleanings (done by the hygenist)

And the bread and butter of your entire life is what?
1. Filling Cavities
2. Crowns
3. Pulling teeth
4. Bridges, dentures, etc

5. Other disorders, such as TMJ, oral lesions, etc.

and for some dentists:
6. some do root canals and the less complex cases of orthodontics
7. That teeth whitening thing and veneers.

When exactly do dentists deal with the issues that are more central to health, like heart, renal, GI disorders, high blood pressure, cancer, car accidents, gunshot wounds, etc???
They deal mainly with cavities, pulling teeth and checking for gum disease, and the more difficult stuff even gets refered to specialists.

And for the record, the average retail pharmacist earns about 92K a year, and the average dentist earns 158K a year. You couldn't pay me enough to spend my life filling cavities, pulling teeth and applying laser teeth whitening!!!

Come on guys...just cause the ha8r is a dentist doesn't mean that dentistry sucks. They are a vital part of health care as we are.

Yeah dentists do play a very important role in health care

Attack Dr.BadVibes' ignorance not his profession. However, he's gone now so we can carry on.

Anyone think of something we can add to the list?

Yeah my I had to see my endodontist today for a root canal- he is so good- no pain. He has been doing only root canals for like 30 years. He gave me lovely news that I may have a cavity (I have not had one since I was around 8 yo) and that I need a root canal on the other side too. Yea! I love the dentist. Really I actually don't mind going. No fear here.

If Dentistry is such a great profession, why does it have the highest suicide rate of all professions?

See Below :
"The Suicidal Professions." Dentists' odds of suicide "are 6.64 times greater than the rest of the working age population," writes researcher Steven Stack. " http://www.straightdope.com/columns/010420.html

Ok, but thats in one California Study....pharmacists do have more access to drugs, ...but the point is, Dr. Bad Vibes, don't knock the profession and Don't be so Pompous, go find a girl in Dental school or something to release some of that frustration...

.

He Created an issue of Racism where one was Unneeded , and made people think that Racism in the pharmacy Community were all Bigots , in the Effort to make pharmacist look like some "Hero" for "Fighting the Power" and "Fighting Racism" . I know Whites , AND BLACKS - In America AND the world , that were in pharmacy .

I feel that in the stead of making pharamcy look good , this has served to feed the Racism , and make ppl; think that pharmacist are Racists on some sort of Broad Scale .

That’s SO Unfair .

On a side note, it will be interesting to see where the pharm. profession stands next year on the GAllup list after all the bad publicity that about not dispensing drugs that deal with birth control methods ...
Actually 2004 Gallup results showed that we tied with Military Officers so we're #3. With nurses as #1 of course.

I think you mean BadVibes. Let me put it this way, I might take crap from an MD/DO, but f*ck, the day I take crap from a dentist... well that day will never happen.

You should hear what my med friends say about them. I was actually a lot nicer than my med friends.

Dr.BadVibes is a troll... just search his posts... they consist of constantly crapping on other people's professions and promoting his own. he obviously has some sort of complex as a result of being reject from med school, pharm school, and who knows what else and now is just trying to make himself feel better for only being a ...dentist... lol,(no other dentists read this.. this is only intended for Dr.BadVibes) ;)

plus, if u notice he is canadian.. which also explains a lot.
