The other night while talking with my pre-md friend, the topic of dent. vs med came up....I told her that I would not want to be in her shoes when she was putting in crazy hours during residency and, ultimately, during her career. She responded that it didn't bother her since as a "real" doctor, she "will be making at least triple " what I will be making as a dentist or specialist....Needless to say I was extremely irritated at her ignorance. I will probably bring up this topic in ~5 years to see if she has a different opinion...

Well, has she had a change of opinion ;)

I think as dentists and physicians we can all join together and be confident in knowing we are way more legit than chiropractors - that schooling/career is a joke within a joke and somehow they call themselves "doctor". Blows my mind.

the way to think of this is that regardless if you're a doctor or a dentist, there will always be someone better than you. This is hard to swallow for the radical Type A personalities that one will likely meet in both of these schools, but if you can handle that statement, I can assure you with hard work and good financial planning, you'll care less if your degree initials are D.M.D, M.D, D.D.S., M.B.A., L.M.A.O., etc.

any accepted dental student could get into D.O. school and most dental students could have gotten into MD schools so i really dont see a difference in "prestige." Dentists are Medical Doctors of dentistry. period.

Not sure how much MDs make but GPs can make quite a lot, if you own your own practice. Only a few years out but make a little over $200k on a 32 hr/week. But people don't realize how much damn physical labor goes into dentistry to make that loot. I only get a small percentage of production breaking my back, neck, wrists, and fingers day in and out.

Can you imagine a cardiologist in the middle of heart surgery being interrupted to go do two physical exams on other patients while having two other ongoing surgeries at the same time! We as dentists don't get the luxury to have that laser focus without being interupted in the middle of our procedures. There is money in dentistry, but it's pretty damn stressful and tiring to make the $$$!

Can the mods please close this thread? this topic is pretty insulting to dentists, dental students, and pre-dents alike who work/have worked extremely hard to pursue a wonderful and exciting interest.
