I agree with your assessments of motorcycles being dangerous to ride in a large population area, hence my post to fancymylotus. I think there is a stat somewhere that says somewhere in their life, a motorcyclist will get hit. Happened to me once but luckily only a scrape on the knee. In Southern Arizona its not much a problem riding a motorcycle but I cant say the same in downtown Tucson or entire Phoenix area.

Man with the cars listed here you guys must be ballin. I'm just going to get a Camaro at an used car dealership.
I drive a Hyundai. But this is WS we're talking about, a surgeon with no kids sapping her income and money to burn.

The cost to own, something a lot of people don't factor when purchasing these things, isn't cheap. The 335's were switched fairly recently to the V6-TT and the issues they had weren't bad. Not to mention they honored their claim to fix it.
If you want bad... look at the newer Subaru STi's. I've never seen a bigger design flaw than an engine that has a high rate of piston failure requiring a new motor. Worst yet; Subaru has never covered the cost to repair it. They claim "You were racing it... that's why". When a) it's a performance model... so even if they raced it; how is it their fault? b) most owners didn't race it and were still screwed.

I do admit that I've yet to see any newer Audi's with issues.

I also shudder to think the cost of ownership for a Bugatti Veyron. Oil change; $15,000 lol

15k for an oil change... Jesus. Well if you have 2.25 million to blow on a supercar, then 15k is a drop in the bucket. But hot damn, that's a third of my yearly tuition!

I haven't heard any complaints about the Audis yet, either. In fact, I've heard that Audi is the new top German vehicle in America and how a lot of BMW drivers have switched to Audis recently. That should say something. Of course, if we're talking German reliability, VW isn't even a blip on the radar. I've heard such terrible things about VWs, and given the current discussion regarding WS's inclusion/exclusion criteria, I know she wouldn't even consider one of the new VW Beetle hard top convertibles lol. Those things are so ugly anyway they make me want to throw my shoes at them and flush them down the toilet. I wouldn't blame her for wanting to take a scalpel to any that she sees.

I have two friends that just got rid of their STi Ltds for a Porsche, and one had to throw in his BRZ as well to afford it. Ironically he works for a Subaru dealership. That's pretty crappy of them to blame the customer for a crappy design flaw... some real shady s*** right there. Had a friend in high school who had the Mitsubishi EVO... now that was a POS.

If I had the money, which I probably won't if I go into academic neuro, I'd get a Nissan GTR. God, I love those cars. All black FTW.

@Winged Scapula

So I've been doing some looking around. Like you said, it's going to be really hard to hit all of your requirements, but here are some options in addition to what have been mentioned above. I'm not sure what would be available locally to you, so my links are just for general pricing ideas and to get an idea of the looks/options/etc.

Hard-top:
Lexus IS-C, new: http://www.lexus.com/models/ISC/features
BMW Z-4 Roadster, new: http://www.bmwusa.com/standard/content/vehicles/2015/z4/Z4sDrive35is/default.aspx
And I can't let this list go without suggesting (it most likely won't be appropriate for your needs): Ferrari California T: http://auto.ferrari.com/en_EN/sports-cars-models/car-range/california-t/

Soft-tops, but worth considering:
Aston Martin AMV8 Roadster, used: http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Aston-Martin-V8-Vantage-d910
Maserati Gran Turismo, used: http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Maserati-GranTurismo-d1465

, but here are some options in addition to what have been mentioned above. I'm not sure what would be available locally to you, so my links are just for general pricing ideas and to get an idea of the looks/options/etc.

I live in an upscale community with pretty much anything - heck, there are Lambo, Maserati, Rolls Royce etc dealers within 2 miles of me.

I don't care for the "butt end"; its a little bulky and not very sleek in appearance unfortunately, as I loved my Lexus SC 430. This is supposed to be the last year they're making this and the dealer tells me another model convertible may be available next year as the IS-C wasn't as big a seller as the SC 430 was (because its uglier, guys).

Yes, I've considered...seems sort of "basic bitch", like everyone has one (see my earlier comment about BMWs).

And I can't let this list go without suggesting (it most likely won't be appropriate for your needs): Ferrari California T: http://auto.ferrari.com/en_EN/sports-cars-models/car-range/california-t/

Now that is gorgeous, but with a base price of about $200K, its a bit extravagant. I would say my budget (or what I would feel comfortable spending) tops out around $120K.

Soft-tops, but worth considering:
Aston Martin AMV8 Roadster, used: http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Aston-Martin-V8-Vantage-d910
Maserati Gran Turismo, used: http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/l-Used-Maserati-GranTurismo-d1465

That Maserati (well this one:
http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ersModified=true#listing=106123972_isFeatured) *does* have me giving second thoughts to soft tops.
Are you looking to buy new, or is used an option?

Used is definitely an option; actually I don't like driving a car off the showroom floor, not a great financial decision. The key to used is that it MUST be reliable. I drive 50 miles+ daily, almost all freeway, and I can't be sitting waiting for the tow truck to pick me up. It can't sit in the shop for months on end, waiting for some rare part to be delivered from Lower Lithuania.

Your options if you want to stick to some sort of budget expand significantly if you look at used. And used can be a very safe bet when you focus on some middle tier sport/luxury cars, unlike buying used if you start getting into the more sport oriented exotics.

As noted above, I'm not comfortable going much over low 6 figures, but would also be fine spending much less if it were a car I really liked. The "exotics" are often not as luxurious inside except for the very expensive ones. I've also got to park this thing at the hospital, so cannot be cruising in a $250K car there and having some jelly pediatric sub specialist keying it. :p

I am thinking along the lines of Maserati if you want something Italian, or even a gorgeous Aston Martin AMV8 if you want to channel your inner spy.

Well my ring tone is the James Bond theme.

Out of the German cars, BMW has my heart.

Seems sort of basic to me or maybe I'm still jealous of all my sorority sisters who drove BMW 3 series while I had a Nissan Sentra.

The only person anywhere close to baller status in here is WS. The rest of us are just at minion status :/

C'mon you're a dentist; I find it hard to believe that are making minion wages. So what are the qualifications to be a "baller"? How much? :naughty:

@Winged Scapula, what color car are we talking here?
Nothing in particular although I am partial to a gunmetal color and would only really rule out "M&M" colors like you sometimes see on the exotics: bright orange, bright yellow, blue, green etc. A dust colored car would be good. :p

Ok in summary:

Convertible (preferably hard top)
Used Ok (even preferable), but recent
Reliable
Under $120K
Leather seats/GPS/preferably manual/can go fast, has power
Don't care much else about engine stuff/tires etc
I do not like "muscle cars" - Corvette, Mustang etc.

Winged Scapula have you considered Mercedes E350/E550 convertible? My girlfriend has a Mercedes E350 (although a coupe version) and she loves it. Its a good "chick" car.

I have but sort of ruled them out due to the soft top; I've ridden in too many that are noisy and the fabric fades/cracks in our heat here.

my bad I forgot you didnt want soft top. There's the BMW 428i for that then I guess.

You are definitely awesome for letting have this conversation, and even more awesomer for thinking about buying some nice cars. I get to live vicariously through you until I'm able to have my own, and that makes you the awesomest.

Really? I didn't think I had a lot...
No, it's not really a lot, it's just the hard top narrows things down significantly.

I live in an upscale community with pretty much anything - heck, there are Lambo, Maserati, Rolls Royce etc dealers within 2 miles of me.
Great! So go do some test drives! Nothing else can compare to the feel you get from actually sitting behind the wheel of one of these machines. And if you end up not liking the cars, at least you had some fun in the process. Be prepared for some paperwork and such before some dealerships might let you drive them though.

Yes, I've considered...seems sort of "basic bitch", like everyone has one (see my earlier comment about BMWs).
Agreed, just wanted to put it out there since I didn't have a budget from you yet.

Now that is gorgeous, but with a base price of about $200K, its a bit extravagant. I would say my budget (or what I would feel comfortable spending) tops out around $120K.
You could find recent used models for within your budget probably. However it's not something I would drive and park at a hospital all day.

Go to your Maserati dealership and test drive one to see. What's the road quality like where you are? If the roads are decent a soft top may do just fine. Plus, they let in that sweet sweet engine noise a little more.

If you look around you'll find horror stories about any and all of these upper-end cars that we are talking about. However I'm a firm believer in the reliability being a function of driver habit. If you jump into the car on a frosty winter morning and lay down a big #11 without warming up the engine, you're going to have problems. A little mechanical sympathy and proper maintenance can go a long way towards reliability.

You're awesome, so you deserve to drive an awesome car (See how I'm keeping it on topic?). These things are definitely a consideration though! The other thing is that at 50+ miles daily, gas mileage can become an issue, and that range is pushing the limit for today's totally electric cars.

Well my ring tone is the James Bond theme.
Aston Martins have the most amazing instrument panel I've ever experienced. Ferraris, Lambos, etc all have awesome instrument panels as well, but nothing compares to the sheer beauty of the Astons. I know, I know. Instrument panels are kind of a weird thing to get excited about, but when you think about it, you spend more time looking at it than anything else in your car. Why not make it a pleasure?

Have you tried an F1-style paddle shift manual transmission before? Each manufacturer has their own version, and they aren't all made equal as far as performance/smooth shifts. Some manufacturers really don't even make the classic manual transmissions anymore, so keep that in mind when you go test driving.

I know its not possible but I was sort of dreaming about not visiting dealers. I hate car sales people; so slimy, so sexist. I've been treated pretty poorly in the past.

Go to your Maserati dealership and test drive one to see. What's the road quality like where you are?

The roads are great - no winter weather to create potholes and the like. My driving is almost all freeway but I love to drive so it would not be unusual for me to cruise around in the desert looking at the scenery. They keep the roads in pretty good condition here.

If the roads are decent a soft top may do just fine. Plus, they let in that sweet sweet engine noise a little more.

LOL...well what bothers me about soft tops is the noise. I don't mind a little engine noise but I'm more of a "quiet luxury ride" sort of girl who enjoys a little vroom when passing anesthesiologists in the slow lane. :p In addition, in our weather here the soft tops tend to fade and crack.

Well no frosty mornings here but you'll have to accept that I am not the best at routine maintenance given my schedule.

I totally understand; frankly, its why I have eliminated some cars. The instrumental panels and dash that look cheap, plasticy etc. I want something with cool dials and gizmos but that has some teak or mahogany on it and looks sleek and stylish.

I'm not sure about black interior what with the heat here.

It's nearly possible these days.

I know several friends who the last car they bought, they made the deal entirely by email with the dealership and only had to come in to sign the paperwork and pick up the car. You can contact multiple dealers this way and negotiate. Their policy in those situations was if the dealer attempts to pull any shenanigans at that final face to face, they just walk.
That's pretty much how I bought my Lexus. I still went obviously to test drive it but all price negotiations and everything else was done upfront.

I just want to be able to walk in, test Drive, write a check, and leave.

Off topic, dont murder me @Winged Scapula. But its super funny when my alerts pop up and it says "Winged Scapula liked your post in the thread Winged Scapula"....I spent like five minutes laughing at that this morning and almost stabbed myself in the eye with my eyeliner.

I am *not* a Maserati fan. I know its not a convertible, but we went to the dealership in the city to test drive the new Ghibli and it was 1)ugly and 2) overpriced and 3) the salespeople in there were extra super creepy. Do not like.

Also I know you dont like studs, but these are amaze. Must wait at least a week in btw shooz purchases to buy new shooz...self control is the absolute worst.

I made up the 15k for an oil change... lol. But I imagine it isn't cheap to put in 8 liters of oil in that car.
So, I looked it up:
For starters, you’ll need to get the standard servicing you get on any late-model car… The price tag on an oil change & standard service on a Bugatti Veyron? $21,000. Did you hear us? Over $20,000. Heck, that’s more than a lot of us paid for our last car…
Then there's the tires... Tires may be one of the least satisfying things to buy… You just kind of need them, and they’re an easy way to dump $500-1000 just to keep your car on the road. Well, $600 or so bucks for some new rubbers seems like a drop in the bucket compared to the $40,000+ price tag on some Bugatti treads. (Of course, $40,000 may seem like a drop in the bucket to a Bugatti owner. All is relative, we suppose.) The other bummer? Bugatti recommends replacing them WAY more often than your everyday passenger car.

Yeah... thanks but no thanks lol

Regarding GTRs; Used ones are becoming affordable (some at 40-50k). So, it's up to you if you're okay with a fairly used one. Personally? I want one, too. I'm just waiting for the price to go down more. Or how they do further down the line. It doesn't help seeing videos like this:

Can we get this thread renamed First World Problems?
No... because it'd ruin the point of this thread originally lol

Thank you all for your input; this seems to have taken a turn for the more interesting.

I'm afraid its off topic and needs to get back to how awesome I am, or I'll close it! ;)
Right? Hence making sure you buy the RIGHT car.

I live in an upscale community with pretty much anything - heck, there are Lambo, Maserati, Rolls Royce etc dealers within 2 miles of me.
Sounds about right where you live lol

Now that is gorgeous, but with a base price of about $200K, its a bit extravagant. I would say my budget (or what I would feel comfortable spending) tops out around $120K.

A lot of these cars don't warrant their price tags, imo. Especially since some of these cars deflate in value SO much after a couple years. Example; Porsche Cayenne was 130k out the door and now you can find em for 20k. How bad would you feel owning that car and trying to trade it in/sell it and losing 100k?

Used is definitely an option; actually I don't like driving a car off the showroom floor, not a great financial decision. The key to used is that it MUST be reliable. You could always import from detroit.... lol

I'm still jealous of all my sorority sisters who drove BMW 3 series while I had a Nissan Sentra.

I'm going to sound like a snob, but base model 3 series are a rip-off and nothing to brag about. They're not bad cars, but I definitely don't call it "high-status".

Nothing in particular although I am partial to a gunmetal color and would only really rule out "M&M" colors like you sometimes see on the exotics: bright orange, bright yellow, blue, green etc. A dust colored car would be good. :p
That's the whole point of owning a sports car lol

Shot in the dark... since it's not convertible. It's already been mentioned but I'll bring it up again:
Nissan-Skyline-GTR-R35-Wallpaper-HD.jpg

Not a convertible but jesus those things are amazing. The starting price is steep, but used ones are going for half of your budget. The best part? These cars aren't affordable to idiots so they generally have an amazing maintenance history/car record.

I know its not possible but I was sort of dreaming about not visiting dealers. I hate car sales people; so slimy, so sexist. I've been treated pretty poorly in the past.

Everyone has to bend over lol. It's not sexist... just dealers are trained to be slimy to succeed.

The roads are great - no winter weather to create potholes and the like. My driving is almost all freeway but I love to drive so it would not be unusual for me to cruise around in the desert looking at the scenery. They keep the roads in pretty good condition here.

Yeah, why I hate where I live. Potholes are always around and never fixed. I've destroyed two wheels (wheels, not just tires) from them and the state refuses to pay up for their fault.

I have not; only the "classic" pedal clutch. I miss driving one which is why its a preference.

The only way to drive a sports car?

It's nearly possible these days.

Yeah,
Some dealers that do it online are actually more upfront/honest about what you contact them for. (Don't judge) But there was this used Audi S6 near me that was decently priced and I called to see if it was for sale/to drive it. Dealer was honest; someone had taken the car for a test drive and roasted the clutch. NO THANK YOU. I felt bad... but appreciated the honesty.

Requirements: convertible (preferably hard top), two seater, preferably manual transmission, reliable and it must have a nice interior.

It *must* be a convertible. Regardless of all the fabulous cars you post, it will be ignored if not a drop top. This is a walk away point.

EDIT: Il Destriero has got it right. Still loving that GranTurisimo though and the 911 has always been a contender.

Pretty sure the Miata comes in a hard-top convertible. Just sayin'

To *ahem* convert your car. lol

No sploosh for a Miata, sorry.

Yeah,
Those cars are fun...but not amazing. No one ever chimes in with "Well, I own a 2004 Mazda Miata" with pride or whatever. The drivers usually duck when someone recognizes them lol

Also, how tf did this thread end up in clinical rotations? Did one of the mods move it here to mess with us?! :rage:

Is that a rhetorical question? It's always been in clinical rotations only because I don't know how to make it the front page of SDN.

I just realized I cant drive a single car posted in this thread. Mainly because a certain SOMEONE(@Kaustikos) hasnt yet taught me to drive manual.

Might have to fly to AZ for lessons. :rage::rage::rage::rage:

Thank you all for your input; this seems to have taken a turn for the more interesting.

I'm afraid its off topic and needs to get back to how awesome I am, or I'll close it! ;)

Really? I didn't think I had a lot...

Now that is gorgeous, but with a base price of about $200K, its a bit extravagant. I would say my budget (or what I would feel comfortable spending) tops out around $120K.

That Maserati (well this one:
http://www.cargurus.com/Cars/invent...ersModified=true#listing=106123972_isFeatured) *does* have me giving second thoughts to soft tops.

Well my ring tone is the James Bond theme.

Seems sort of basic to me or maybe I'm still jealous of all my sorority sisters who drove BMW 3 series while I had a Nissan Sentra.

C'mon you're a dentist; I find it hard to believe that are making minion wages. So what are the qualifications to be a "baller"? How much? :naughty:

Nothing in particular although I am partial to a gunmetal color and would only really rule out "M&M" colors like you sometimes see on the exotics: bright orange, bright yellow, blue, green etc. A dust colored car would be good. :p

Ok in summary:

Convertible (preferably hard top)
Used Ok (even preferable), but recent
Reliable
Under $120K
Leather seats/GPS/preferably manual/can go fast, has power
Don't care much else about engine stuff/tires etc
I do not like "muscle cars" - Corvette, Mustang etc.

:sour:

Living in Scottsdale does make you pretty jaded against BMWs with every dip**** cruising around in a LEASED 3-series, but the new M-series are gorgeous (with hard top too!).

I am *not* a Maserati fan. I know its not a convertible, but we went to the dealership in the city to test drive the new Ghibli and it was 1)ugly and 2) overpriced and 3) the salespeople in there were extra super creepy. Do not like.

Well now, that's not really fair to the Gran Turisimo is it?

Also I know you dont like studs, but these are amaze. Must wait at least a week in btw shooz purchases to buy new shooz...self control is the absolute worst.

Its not that I dislike studs, these are more delicate than the Valentino Rock Studs, so I like them (except that Loubs don't fit my feet well).
goddamnit. i want WS and etherman money. wheres my violin. this sucks. +pity+
I thought dentists made good $$$. Sounds like your employer has you undervalued (although if you can avoid Loubs or Rock Studs you aren't starving my dear).
excuse me i think i posted a car that fits a lot of what you want above
+ convertible
Yes you did - I was referring to Porsche 911 in general. No shade inferred.
Pretty sure the Miata comes in a hard-top convertible. Just sayin'

My ex purchased the Lotus right out of fellowship; darn uncomfortable car. Good for him driving 2 miles to the hospital, but for me and my bony butt.

The Miata is *cute* but...not to put too fine a point on it: I'm a well reimbursed surgeon at the top of my game. I have no mortgage (paid off), no car payment (paid off), no kids, no student loans (paid off and grandparents that paid for most anyway) and minimal debt (total on cards today is under $1000). I can afford the nicer cars being posted without sacrificing any lifestyle, so why not?

The @Winged Scapula school for people who can't drive good and want to do other stuff good too.

If you go, make sure to go during MLB spring training season so she can take you out for cougar lessons while you're there.

Its here now! Old Town is swamped with "cleat chasers" and its impossible to get dinner reservations. But I'd be happy to give her driving and cougar lessons. Of course for her to be a cougar, we'd be looking at high schoolers. hSDN anyone?!!

Seriously, the "$30,000 millionaires" here are annoying.
A gently owned one of these would be in your price range as well.

That's what my trainer wants me to get - he drives an Audi so has been pushing for that; they are nice.

One of my partners has the hard top. It is a slick ride. And for a small car it has plenty of room inside, even for a big dog like me.
Go take a test drive.
There's a how it's made about the R8 that I thought was pretty cool. Lots of hands on construction and assembly.

I'd be quite uncomfortable in most of the cars mentioned:(, so if I was in your shoes(probably be uncomfortable in those too) I'd stretch your budget by ~10k, get right with the soft-top and go in this direction. Or get the SL

Well this thread exploded since I was here last.

It also appears I'm losing my fight to keep @Winged Scapula out of a Porsche (just the next step up from BMW on the poser scale) or an Audi R8 (really, they're pretty ugly. The dimensions are ALL WRONG).

Why "uncomfortable" in those cars?

LOL at the Bentley. One of my anesthesiologists always teases me about seeing my Bentley out in the physicians parking lot (it belongs to one of the plastic surgeons). I'd never hear the end of it if I bought one. Besides, I'm really not being obstinate about the soft tops - they just don't last out here in the 115+ degree summer heat and the daily sun. Remember this is a daily driver and I don't have covered parking at the office.

Ha ha...you're not losing at all.

I don't know about a 911 being for poseurs; maybe if you're driving an old one (because that's all you could afford). What kept me from buying one in the first places was that the interior was not nearly as nice as in my current car.

I'm not really drawn to the Audi, so you needn't worry. It looks too "sporty" for me and I agree with you about the dimensions; its the reason I don't like the Lexus IS. It looks like a boys car. :p

I really like the look of the Maserati GT convertible; I'm seriously thinking of flying up to Vegas and looking at it.

When I am finally in the market for a new car, I think one of my biggest factors will be technology integration.

I can't wait to see how slick consoles/screens/phone&computer integration/etc is in another 10 years.
I know - its amazing how much has changed since I purchased my car. Back up cameras, front bumper sensors, cars parallel parking for you, phone/computer integration. If I could do my charts during my 30 min daily commute, I could be so efficient!
