2013-2014 University of Texas - Houston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MS2 here.

If you have any questions, PM me. Otherwise, this is a great school. I couldn't be happier.

I am so excited to apply here. I currently do stem cell research at UT Houston and I am really happy here, and the TMC is amazing. Best of luck to all those who apply!

Do ya know when they start looking at apps? Like many others here, I would love to go to this school!

Yea me too!

From what I've extensively searched on these threads, the earliest possible interview invites go out last few days of june/beginning of July.

If you search through last year's thread you can get a better idea of when they start handing out interviews. I think got my interview invite mid-August and I had the third interview date, so they probably started handing out interviews at the end of July. Other Texas schools give out interview invites significantly earlier though.

Here is the twitter feed for the admissions department:
https://twitter.com/UTHAdmissions

They tweeted on 7/16 last year that they downloaded the applications and started looking at them. Order still matters though, they look at your application in order of submission.

I'm trying to gauge if I'm a good fit for UT Houston. Besides the published stats, what kind of applicant does UT Houston look for?

It's hard to say. My class is completely diverse with everyone having a great story. There are the cookie cutter applicants, there are plenty of non-trads, engineers, athletes, etc. The majority of my class is incredibly laid back and relaxed. It's not a 'gunner' atmosphere at all and I can't think of anything related to 'gunning' that happened in my first year. From what I can tell, the admissions office is interested in filling the class with unique stories, even if the stats are a bit lower. That being said, this process is a crap-shoot so who knows what will catch their eye.

I have a few friends that interviewed here and I have heard nothing but great things about the relaxed/non-gunner environment. Plus they seem promote strong upper-to-lower classman communication and relationships 👍

Does UT-Houston send out receipt of application emails? I've only gotten confirmations from TCOM, UTHSCA and TTHSC El Paso after TMDSAS processed my app, wondering if I should call. Ahh the neuroses of a med school applicant.

They will send one, but according to this thread being so empty it doesn't appear that anyone else has received it either.

Hi
I have not created a TMDSAS account yet because I did not think I had any chance at any schools in Texas. However, I am contemplating towards applying here. Do you think it is too late to start an application and submit an applciation here at this point?

No, but unless you have ties with Texas, it'll be really hard for you to get in (unless you have a 3.8/36 or something)

I agree with miss chievous. Unless your scores are phenomenal, it is probably not worth it to apply. If your scores are great and you apply through TMDSAS, then just apply to all the schools. $135 to apply to one school or $135 for 9 schools; the second option just sounds better 🙂

Has anyone noticed that UT Houston has an unusually low percentage of female matriculants compared to the other TX publics? Strangely, though, they have about the same percentage of female applicants as the others. Hmm...

You caught us!

Joking aside, a lot of the Texas schools were at around 40% female matriculants. It definitely isn't the normal, just a weird year.

I'd also like to add that they addressed this the very first day of orientation for us, so it's not some sketchy thing that they are ignoring.

I posted a link to the UTH Admissions twitter account somewhere on here. They will tweet when they start inviting for interviews.

Can I do a WAMC with you by PM? I'd appreciate it a lot

Sure thing, although I have no correspondence with Admissions so I can only go based off of personal experience and vague notions of what my classmates did.

Just got an email that UTH received my application and is now under review

Your application has been received for the 2013-2014 interview season. As of today, the status of your application is UNDER REVIEW. Please DO NOT contact our office to check the status of your application. We will contact you by email with any status change. Please make sure TMDSAS has your updated email address.

This email is a CONFIRMATION that University of Texas Medical School at Houston has received your application and is not to be interpreted as an interview invitation. Reminder: we will send out interview invitations via email so please continue to check your email.

Since UT Houston DOES NOT accept any additional recommendation/update letters sent directly to the school until AFTER an applicant is interviewed, please update TMDSAS with any change of information (mailing address, grades, MCAT, name change, email, etc.).

Thank you for applying to the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the Admissions and Student Affairs Office, and we will be glad to help you.

I got a confirmation e-mail this morning. Pretty happy to see that the ball is starting to roll with UT-H.

Received a confirmation email today stating the school has received my application and it is under review.

**Just saw the above posts!

lol heads up guys, UT Houston wants to make sure we know that we aren't invited for interviews yet. Also, I get the impression they will trash our apps if we so much as contact them...

Very exciting to see things moving here!

I agree. That "under review" email was quite clear.

I also received a "under review" e-mail this morning. But one of my rec letters is not in yet. So they review the application even before it is complete?

Literally the first thing that came to my mind after reading the e-mail was "This is my first impression of your school. Damn, chill out."

For those of y'all who got the confirmation email, how long did it take after your TMDSAS was transmitted for Houston to send you the email? I still haven't gotten it.

3 weeks for me.

However they did send them to us in a large batch. I submitted 6/3 and received it the same time as ever one else (about 7 weeks after)

TMDSAS transmitted on 6-17 and I got the confirmation on the 23rd with everyone else.

I got my confirmation email today. Tmdsas was transmitted last friday though so I probably have a much longer wait than the rest of you. It should be interesting to see this thread finally get some action soon.

From the last two years of threads for UTH, the school sent out the first batch of interviews between 8/15 - 8/22. I bet this thread will get exciting soon!

However, I believe UTH white coat ceremony was yesterday, so interview invites still might be several days.

Good luck y'all!

Got excited when I saw this thread bump...I need to find myself a life one of these days...

Maybe Monday of next week we might see some activity in this thread!

According to their twitter, interview season starts September :scared:
