Can programs ask you if you are applying to more than 1 specialty?

I was looking back at my interviews this season. I had a couple of PD's and interviewers ask me if I was applying to more than one specialty. To which I answered yes, i had been applying to Family, IM and Psych (before eventually doing my Psych audition and ranking it higher).

But are programs allowed to do this? I thought it was a match violation on their part? Or is this legit to ask?

Just curious.

No, its not a match violation to ask if you are applying to multiple specialties. Completely legit to ask.

Thanks, I was misinformed by an upperlcassmen I guess. It was super hard for me to narrow my specialty choice down this cycle. I am glad where I am at and I hope I dont change my mind again.

Yes, there is a lot of nonsense and misunderstanding about the match.

Programs aren't allowed to solicit information from you, verbally or in writing, implying a commitment to their program. They can certainly ask where else you're applying, what other (if any) specialties.

Just as a follow, now that the match is over,...can programs who ranked you, see how far down your ROL you went or what other programs/specialties you interviewed at?

From what I understand this information should remain confidential.

They actually can't (or rather shouldn't...since they certainly do) ask you where else you are applying:

From the match communication code of conduct:

shall not require an applicant to disclose ranking preferences, ranking intentions, or the locations of other programs to which the applicant has or may apply.
Ahhh...Thank you. That is new and I was not aware of that.

Read it more closely. It doesn't say "shall not ask", is says "shall not require". They can still ask.

Yes, they can ask that. As far as I know, they can ask your marital status and such also. What they can't do is rank you based on that info.

How would you prove that a program did rank you based on that info? Good luck.

I don't believe they're even allowed to ask about marital status, sexual orientation, children, etc. That's not to say it doesn't happen.

It happens. Happened to me and every other woman i know applying to ortho this year.

No one in this thread is saying these things don't happen. The question was what are the rules/regulations. Everyone is aware these all get violated with good frequency.

I wouldn't have expected it had some one not warned me before hand. I'm glad they did. It is what it is and you just have to roll with it, but it would have really thrown me off.

yeah i agree. b/c no matter how nicely you do it, they have the upper hand and can just say you made them feel uncomfortable w/o divulging that they were in fact the one who violated the rules

can they see that we also apply to another specialty somewhere on our applications?
No. Though if you have three years of ortho research in your activities and three ortho sub-i's listed on your transcript... The general surgeon interviewing you might be able to figure out your (at least historic) interest in ortho.
