2019-2020 UT Houston ( McGovern)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
McGovern still hasn't appeared on my TMDSAS "School Rank Preference" page. All of the other schools I've interviewed at are present. McGovern was my first interview so it seems weird to me that it's not showing up yet. Is this something worth emailing them about?

No, they will login all their interviewees in plenty of time for your match list submission

I interviewed on Friday and it already showed up on mine?

Does anybody know if mcgovern responds well to ITA requests? I have a II at UTMB and want to try and make one trip out of it if possible.

Yeah that’s weird. Well if December rolls around and it’s still not showing up I’ll shoot them an email. I interviewed on their first interview day. Thanks for your input!

All y'all who have an interview date Sept 20, check my weather post over here: The Republic of Texas XXXVIII : The Cowboy Code

Interviews may be rescheduled if flooding in Houston from this storm makes travel unsafe or impossible. Keep an eye on your McGovern emails and their Twitter account. Stay safe!

So are applications reviewed based on when they're submitted?

It seems like McGovern is pretty much going in order based on the completion dates posed of people who have gotten an interview invite.

Same here. So, safe to say the earlier applications have been reviewed and passed up?

Thanks for the info btw!
The final deadline for TMDSAS is coming up soon (October 1).
At that point the schools will have their total pool of all applicants to mull over.
Let's say they had looked at an applicant once already and put their app in a "maybe" stack, waiting to see what other gems of applications would come in. Now that they can see them all, they can move some "maybe's" into their "interview invitation" stack.
Anyone who has not been rejected is still in the running!

Thank you for the info, @wysdoc!

Does McGovern (and I guess all other Texas medical schools) notify the applicant if they've been rejected during the cycle?

It is very uncommon in the Texas system to get a rejection, from what I have observed. One year UTRGV sent out some rejections even before they sent out interviews, but I haven't seen them do that again 😱
Applicants who just hear nothing from a school at some point take it as a silent rejection.
After Match day if an applicant gets the message "No Match", they can still get on Wait Lists and get an offer from the Wait List later at any school where they have interviewed.

Oh wow didn’t know that! I’ll still keep my hopes up. This process can be a mystery at time. I just want to fast forward to match day already.

They just started July based on one of the recent postings above.

I submitted beginning of July and got a II later in the month. I'm not sure if the review process is entirely chronological.

My extra LOR hadn't been submitted and I got an email saying they can't make an interview decision until they have all my letters. It looks like there was an II wave this morning so I think they got to my application. If anyone else is lacking an LOR make sure to get that in ASAP.

Hi! I was wondering how you and/or other students handle the schedule at Mcgovern in terms of study time, volunteering, and balancing personal and professional life? I've heard class on most days are scheduled from 8am-5pm.

I know someone already replied to this, but I thought I’d add my two cents. First semester is definitely busier because of anatomy, but we do not have class from 8-5 pm daily. We have class about 8-12 most days with anatomy one afternoon and every 1-2 weeks we have a skills session with a standardized patients in the afternoon as well. Also, on Fridays we don’t really have new classes, just review sessions.
So most days we are done with class by 12 and then I study until 5 and I go home and am done for the day. I honestly feel like I have more free time than I did In college, to be honest. That being said I work really hard during the day and manage my time well to be done by 5.

Was McGovern your top or one of your top choices? Why or why not? (sorry this sounds like an essay question lol)

Sincerest apologies for the late reply - first semester has had me quite busy!

McGovern was my number one choice, I was also fortunate enough to pre-match here. I chose to attend for two key reasons:

1) The people are incredible. This includes the faculty, staff, residents, and my fellow students. For example, we completed our first round of exams last week. One of the senior emergency medicine residents hosted several review sessions for our anatomy practical in which he walked us through every structure we were responsible for knowing. Additionally, our head faculty member for anatomy was in the lab practically 24/7 the week leading up to our practical in order to provide assistance whenever we needed it. I strongly believe this level of commitment from the faculty is something unique to McGovern. During my interview journey, I didn't find another institution with faculty so special.

2) McGovern's location in the Texas Medical Center means you will get to see things there that you will never see anywhere else. The primary teaching institution (Memorial Hermann Hospital) has the busiest emergency room in the entire country (by many metrics), and you are given every opportunity to start shadowing/taking call/doing research as soon as you step foot in the door. With my interests in a highly competitive specialty, I knew that McGovern would put me in the best position possible to reach success.

Please don't hesitate to reach out with any additional questions you may have; I'll be happy to help in whatever fashion I can.

Does McGovern tend to offer a significant amount of pre-match acceptances?

They have done in the past, yes. Last year 27 SDN members announced a pre-match here, second only to UTSW with 32
Counting the number of SDN members who posted is, of course, an unscientific sample, but it's what I got!

UTSW hands out a lot more admits early compared to UTH.

My secondary was completed 06/25. Do you guys think I’m being passed up?

Realistically only a month with weeks off for holidays and breaks

True, they usually give 3-4 weeks at least in advance to schedule an interview so I’m guessing the last week of October is when we should know if we’ve been discounted since there wouldn’t be enough time after that to schedule an interview bc of the holidays.

II received today! For your perusal, here are my stats:
URM IS resident
Low LM 63 balanced out by everything else (combat vet/volunteer/published research/et al.)
TMDSAS submitted: Late June
Interview date range offered: Late Oct - mid Nov

For my fellow low stats peeps, I am n=1 that adcoms do read the other stuff in your app besides the stats. Best of luck to all on here!
