Anyone who went to NEOMED or has anecdotes regarding themselves or others, is NEOMED a good school? I so badly want to be a physician, but I do not want to apply to a school that is toxic or harmful to its students. I am from Northeast Ohio, but all I hear are awful things about it. It is an LCME accredited MD school, but is it a good one? Is access to research good? I want to match into cardiology or gastroenterology, and haven't seen anyone match in those the last 4 years. I also would rather not spend my time after med school in Ohio. I am curious if the school has been revamped and is a lot better than it used to be, or if it is still as bad as people say it is. My desire is to be a physician and with ties to the school, I can't help but think I would be wasting a chance to go to med school by not applying, but I also do not want to apply if it is somewhere I couldnt see myself at for 4 years or will not help me specialize into what I currently hope to.

If you are an Ohio resident, you should apply to NEOMED and all of the other state schools in Ohio. You, and I suspect your parents, have paid taxes there and Ohio imposes a significant tax burden on its residents. You paid for a chance at a spot there and if you really want to be a physician, it might be your best shot at becoming an MD.

From whom do you hear that NEOMED is not a good medical school? Is it from residency program directors or physicians in the community? Or is it from ignorant, elitist undergraduates who said that Miami of Ohio was beneath them when they were high school bozos in the lunchroom? How would you know that no one from NEOMED matches into GI or Cards? Those are fellowships and fellowship matches for internal medicine graduates aren't shown in medical school match lists.

If you look at the 2025 match list for NEOMED you will see that its graduates were matched at a bunch of internal medicine programs including Einstein Montefiore, Arizona, Hopkins Bayview, Louisville, Indiana, U of Pittsburgh Mercy and several at Ohio State. If NEOMED couldn't produce quality physicians, it's a sure thing that the program director at Ohio State would know it. Apply to NEOMED!

Thank you for this reply. I heard this stuff from my brother, who is a GI specialist, and from a family friend who attended the school about 5-6 years ago, I believe. They both heavily encouraged me not to apply. My father was also on their BSMD interview committee and knows the people there well, but he was telling me not to apply. I personally think that any MD school I go to, I believe my work ethic will carry me to the specialty and location I want to go to. I try not to listen to pre-meds or those who don't have personal information with the school, but to hear it from someone who worked on one of NEOMED's committees, someone who went to the school firsthand, and someone who is fully established in their field and is involved in residency matches, it made me feel some shreds of doubt. I am still taking my own path, and I will be applying, but I just wanted some info to calm my mind about it. Thank you so much for your help and for the reassurance. Also, go Buckeyes, alma mater <3 <3. I would love to be in Ohio for med school and always dreamed of being at OSU for residency, med school, and the future, but my goal is to be a physician and care for all populations, so I do not mind where I go. I will make the best of any opportunity to get a degree.

I think you are being sensible. You seem to understand that qualified applicants for MD seats outnumber MD seats. An MD seat with instate tuition is a plum. Apply to Wright, Cincinnati, Toledo and OSU. If you get more than one acceptance that's the time to be picky.

Lots of people gripe about the medical school they attended because the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Ignore them.

Yep thats my thought. why throw away a solid instate and in region chance (that i have connections to) at an accreddited MD school that has only been improving every single year (new dean, renovated building, newer curriculum). I have applied to all ohio schools also!! also if i were to only get into neomed thats one year earlier that i would get to begin pursuing my goals in helping various patient populations than if I were to try and be high and mighty over a school (which I have no position as an applicant to do). Thank you for your advice. I think I just needed that opinion from another person in the medical field that I have no relation to to dispel my doubts. I hope you have a wonderful night/day/weekend. Thank you for answering my spiel.
