Already accepted, any point in joining Phi Kappa Phi? I just got the invite in the mail, kind of funny because I'm not even taking classes this semester but whatever. I'm already accepted, I figure no one is going to care about this anymore, if any they will care about ones I get into in med school right?

As far as I can tell there's no point in the honors societies at all, ever.

id be wary of anything coming in the mail...

its probably not worth your time/money

adcoms know these are resume padders
edit: and you dont even need to pad your resume...

Even for med school admissions, they aren't really important. I got invites for tau beta pi, Alpha Eta Mu Beta and golden key and I declined all of them. Golden key is really egregious, u have to pay to get in :laugh:.

For med school, AOA apparenttly can score u point for ur residency app. so if u're lucky to get in, then do it.

not if your society is very active in the community/leadership activities (i just joined an honors "fraternity"...really a society but they want to distinguish themselves)

it is VERY VERY active...2-3 events a week...

it also focuses heavily on gaining leadership experience but also focuses on fellowship and scholarship

it can provide you with things for your PS and for your secondaries.

Members of Phi Kappa Phi do get discounts from a handful of companies (like Dell and AT&T) so that's kind of cool, and there are even discounts for members' families. They also offer grants for research, which seems to be the main benefit of joining.

I'm in the organization, but if I were already accepted (to vet school in my case) I would not have joined.

Phi Beta Kappa is a huge honor for lib arts majors, will make your family proud. It will also follow you to your grave - read some obits and you will see it mentioned, proudly.

Phi Kappa Phi is basically the PBK equivalent for non-lib arts majors; not as prestigious, but still an extremely nice honor.

The rest of the honor societies are useless.

Phi Beta Kappa + AOA (for med school) are the only two I've heard that earn you points. If others have benefits that will help you in other ways, go for it. But in terms of academic "points", those are the big two, IMO.

Just to clarify, PKP is for all majors.

Nope.

And I'm surprised no one's posted the xkcd yet.

i got that letter and while i patted myself on the back for supposedly being in the top 10% of my class or whatever they tell you, I wasn't about to shell out 80 bucks to join a club. Especially since you have to pay yearly dues not just a one time membership fee.

Unless you're super involved in honor societies, they aren't worth the paper the invite is written on

Make sure that you turn down AOA in med school, with a sniff of disdain and a laugh of derision. Residency Directors take AOA seriously, but what do they know? Not as much as you apparently.

Yeah when I first looked it up to make sure it wasn't a "Who's who of high school seniors" haha, someone said it was a one time membership fee. Then I read more into it and found that to be false. I would be very unlikely to keep up dues, so when I wanted to use a discount or something it probably wouldnt even be there for me. But it is nice to get the letter I guess. And yeah definitely if I get invited to AOA I will be joining, but thats what I meant by figuring that people would only care about what I get into while in med school.
