I propose that we sticky a new thread with upcoming conferences/workshops. Its purpose can be dualfold:

(a) To inform others of conferences that they may be unaware of but may wish to look into further, and

(b) To allow fellow SDNers to hook up with one another if they are attending the same conference (whether it be for networking, room sharing, or just a quick chat).

Event: APA 116th Annual Convention
Date(s): August 14-17, 2008
Location: Boston

To start, I pulled this from the clinical psychology HPSP thread. There may be individuals who could help but who do not see the post because it's buried in an HPSP discussion.

Hey is anyone going to APA? I realize this may be weird, but im a poor grad student. The cheapest flight i have found is $350 bucks. The hotels are through the roof. And I havnt even registered yet. Im presenting, so I dont want to duck out of it. If only the Army would have started me this summer rather than fall, I would be OK. So is anyone one else going? I am trying to cut down on the cost of a room.

It's good that you clarified what you meant by "hook up." Because from what I hear about conferences....

I'm going to APA. Hotels are through the roof (my group is in a $200/night room).

 Yeah, I thought about that as I was typing it. Thought clarification might be needed. Not trying to start a conference dating service here, although it could be something RD & I can add in order to extend our grad student escort service.

See! It's working already. JN's been successfully hooked up with erg's aunt. ;) Can we use you as a success story in our advertisements?

The two I regularly attend:

Society for Psychophysiological Research
October 1-5th, 2008
Austin, TX
http://www.sprweb.org/meeting/index.cfm

Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco
April 27-30th, 2009
Dublin, Ireland
http://www.srnt.org/meeting/2009/index.html

Can't beat a heavily subsidized vacation to Ireland:) Which reminds me...I need to get my passport.

I won't be at APA this year, but I'm going next year (Toronto I believe). I may go to ABCT just because its an hour away so why not. SDN party at my place:)

Great Idea!

I added the posted conferences to the 1st post. As people list conferences of interest/that they are attending, I (or paramour) can add them. If people want network and catch up, we can add you to the "attendee" section.

Great conference for those interested in trauma methodology.

Very good (and EASY!!) to get travel stipends

I love the idea of this thread. Unfortunately I'm going to no conferences this year. My new schtick is restorative justice so I might try to catch a conference about that next year.

I'm totally in favour of a conference dating service, haha.

It's still up in the air on whether I'm attending anything else this upcoming year due to some completely screwy going-ons, so you may not be the only one. There's a conference or two I thought about going to, without presenting, but still unsure I want to spend vast amounts of money (not to mention the PITA it will be to take care of my other responsibilities while I'm away) only to go and have a looksy. Prof wants me to present her research at a conference that is no where near to being convenient for me and I'm trying to get it through to her that although I appreciate the opportunity, it's probably not going to happen.

You can go ahead and put me down for officially going to both SPR and SRNT. Barring some unforeseen disaster, I can't imagine missing either. SPR has some awesome workshops this year, and I wouldn't miss Dublin for the world.

As an aside (feel free to move this since I don't want to derail the thread) what sorts of opportunities for students to get involved have people found with the larger societies? I've volunteered before, but volunteer usually just means setting up chairs and the like in exchange for a waived registration fee.

Sorry i didn't find this thread sooner. I just got back from CPDD and it was amazing. Not only because it was in Puerto Rico (which by the way was absolutely beautiful) but lots to learn and great research going on in the field :)

Next CPDD Conference is scheduled for June 20-25, 2009 in Reno, Nevada :)

NAN

2008: October 21 - 25,
Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers, New York, NY

INS mid year

July 2 - 5, 2008
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Here's a polite request for all posters to spell out abbreviations; defeats half the purpose of the thread, I think, to have to separately look up what posters mean.

:)

Thanks, JN!

I am amazed at the number of international conferences posted. I actually stopped myself from initially posting a few because I didn't think they would be too popular among students but apparently this is not the case. Now I need to dig out their information again.

In the meantime, I've already seen a couple of conferences I'd like to check out at some point, so this is already a great resource (for me at any rate!).

Keep 'em coming!

Oh yeah.
Everyone probably knows it, but ABCT = Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

I will be attending SRCD (Society for Research in Child Development) in Denver next spring. I just submitted a poster as 1st author and am really hoping it gets accepted, but I will go even if it doesn't. It will be my first conference so I am really excited!

Catching up on upcoming conferences......

I'll be at:

2008 Florida Prevention Conference and Suicide Prevention Symposium in Orlando, FL. (Sept 30th-Oct 3rd).

2008 Florida Association of School Psychology Conference in Kissimmee, FL (Oct 29th-Nov 3rd).

And most likely at.....

2009 American Association of Suicidology Annual Conference in SF, CA April 15th-18th, 2009.

Anyone going to these conferences?

I just booked my hotel for ABCT, where I'll be presenting a poster. None of the close resort ones because I would have to sell a kidney to pay for a room there, but it's not too far.

hey cara, when are you presenting your poster?? I am going to be volunteering there; the head professor in the lab I RA in (Dr. Beidel, does anyone know??) is the local arrangements chair so I will be helping out taking tickets and what not (and of course listening in).

Ill be walking around when I finish helping out looking at posters and whatnot, maybe Ill stp by and see youres :-D

Yeah, but everyone else on the poster is a PhD. :D

Deadline for submission to the Canadian Psychological Association conference in June is coming up in 2 weeks.

I just searched the itinerary online for the first author's last name. The title would probably work, too.

anyone in illinois going to the IPA convention friday?

Hey, Just wondering if anyone knows of any upcoming conferences pertaining to LGBT issues? Or family issues?

Thanks for the help!

Ohh! I'll be here too! I submitted for a presentation of my masters project... let's hope it gets accepted :p

Event: American Association of Suicidology Annual Conference

I'm not familiar with any LGBT specific conferences, but there are many larger conferences which have LGBT poster and presentations. For example, ABCT (which is next week) has numerous LGBT topics {my poster included :)}. Other large conferences like APA, and APS also have LGBT presentations.

I haven't heard back *officially* yet, but I think I have a pretty good shot.

Event: Southeastern Psychological Association
Date: February 18-21, 2009
Location: New Orleans, Louisiana

I'm pretty sure I'll be attending this as I'm on a poster and one of my labmates is from New Orleans. Its the week of Mardi Gras, sign me up!!

I'm not sure when Barkus is this year....but it is an AWESOME parade, right before Fat Tuesday. It is the official Dog Parade of Mardi Gras (fund raiser for their shelters). I went to it last year, and I had a blast.

It looks like the Barkus parade is on that Sunday this time. My labmate had mentioned something about her Dad securing us a balcony for one of the biggest parades, maybe she was talking about that one. I can't wait!

Last year my casino host offered to give me tickets for their reserved balcony, but I wanted to walk around and meet the puppies! Hundreds dogs come out....in costume. I don't know the theme of it this year, but it is definitely an event. The shop owners put out bowls of water, biscuits, etc.

The best place to catch it is behind jackson square (where the tarot card readers setup), as they should have a live band playing for tips and a lot of people just hanging out. The parade loops all around, and you can go a few blocks a couple different ways and catch it.

That sounds amazing, I just happen to LOVE dogs. Thanks for the info!
