People are going to jump in here and rail on you, saying "one of these threads gets started every week," and posting pictures of dead horses.

That said, I agree with you, not them. These threads always get locked, and there's no good reason why. As you point out, white males are a minority in med school. Why can't we have our own thread?

No, seriously. I see nothing wrong with the thread, any group should be allowed to have one, but there have been tens and hundreds of similar threads like this one, where people think they're being really clever.

yes but it seems the other ones (muslim, AA, etc) find their way to the front each week, but this one disappears. Just trying to keep it going so the poor white males do not feel left out...

Maybe because no one posts on here (besides the initial "way to be original" replies). Maybe if the white male pre-meds kept it afloat it wouldn't die an early death.

By the way, most of them have died already except for the African American one....I think.

Why do people give two ****s what their skin color is?

For instance, why does a black female need to have a Any black females out there thread? I'm not saying she can't if she wants one I'm just wondering why you'd want one.

IMO all these threads suck

I actually had a teacher in highschool tell me that I owe reparations because of the way my ancestors mistreated african americans, etc... Its a quite racist thing to say as a matter of fact. My parents were born in Italy and owned a farm the size of some people's yards. Nobody owes me anything and I don't owe them anything, regardless of my color.

And the mob is Sicilian, can't even blame me for that :laugh: !

Umm....that's easy. Jews only make ~1% of religious group, so I'm guessing the other one is the majority.

I interviewed at Temple with 9 other white guys. There were 10 interviewees total. There's a minority for you. :confused:

PLEASE - tell me this: At what point during the SDN registration process does one have to agree to research any and all previous threads and evaluate them for similar content BEFORE posting a similar question? Honestly, before you go through the motions of searching, copying, and pasting links to the previously posted threads regarding the same subject, do your best to sit tight and STFU.

Honestly, I'm sure that about 50% of all the posts on SDN are considered "reposts." There is probably a new thread concerning letters of reference, letters of intent, or clinical/research experience every day. If you want to get in the business of trying to make people feel out of line, you have a lot of catching up to do.

You are exactly right. Some will argue that this preferential treatment is given to underrepresented minorities because they statistically aren't given the same opportunities as an average white American. It's complete BS, and I feel sorry for anyone attempting to get a leg up on the competition by checking the URM box on their application.

BTW, I have info from a source from a top 10 school that told me its ''worse'' to be south asian indian male than white male when applying (bc there are so damn many indians applying that there is overrepresentation of indians in this field when considering the proportion of indians to the rest of the races in the general population).

btw, this gives me no reason to complain, just suck it up and live life.

What are HBCU's?

To all of you mocking the idea that white men are a minority in med school, why do you find that so funny? The definition of a minority is less than 50%. White men are less than 50% of current medical school students. It's a factually correct statement.

It's so funny when people gripe about something being original.

A joke should only be told once and if I want to be on sdn for everyday for 4 years and have 7000 post everyone else should respect my right to not have to see the same thread multiple times. And you better expect me to come down like a 01ck if I have to see these threads!!!!!

I think it's a funny idea but the correct term is enlish/irish/italian/french/swedish/polish/german-American get it right guys

I don't think anyone on here really thinks white males are in the minority. All you have to do is look at the statistics. That's why it's a joke guys/gals.

A quick primer on internet forums: when a new post is added to a thread, the thread is brought back up to the top. The "other" threads find their way to the front because people post in them. If people bothered to post in the same "poor white male" thread, it too would be brought to the front. See, this post just went to the top of the forum....it's mmaaagggiccc....

Not to burst your illogical bubble there high-speed, but if you break it down by race and gender then NO group will be over 50%. Thus, everyone is a "minority"...and by extension, therefore, no one is a minority.

I'm not sure how the pre-med scene is these days but contrary to populuar belief in medical schools white males are still the largest group and in some places the majority.
 
Dear PugMd: There is no URM box or option to check on AMCAS. There are simply the questions asking applicants their race/ethnicity. There is, howerver,a disadvantaged box or option to check.

Agreed, on all accounts. We're all in a very select group right now. Why does ANYONE feel the need to seperate and segregate us further? These type of threads only further feed in to the negative cycle of forming cliques on the matriculation into med school. Maybe if we all just accept we're doctor's and skin color has no bearing on where we lend our support, we can make an attempt at ending this self-segregation. (Foolishly optimistic, yes I may be)
 
I don't think there's going to be a clique of three black females in a medical school. The premed scene is much more cutthroat than the medical school scene. These individuals are simply seeking extra support from others like them on top of other advice or support that they are receiving from SDN. Psychology and Sociology research says that it is hard to imagine yourself as a minority unless you experience being a minority. Since there are not many black females in medical school, there must be a need for extra support during the premed years and years prior to undergrad. That is all that is. It is Not about self-segregation or separation because these same females are posting in other threads on SDN as well.

Lol. That is very idealistic my friend. Even on the most open minded and liberal campuses, people still collect into racial groups...its just more comfortable. Everyone on SDN has the right to have their own little racial thread, even the white guys. The fact is that white guys are here just don't feel like continually posting in it. No biggie.
 
Did I not add the clause at the end that I am being idealistic? However, I think by starting SOMEWHERE, however small, and stopping this further grouping of students, it may help at some point down the line.

Additionally, to BarrySanders, what info do you have to back up your "three black female med students" line? I can tell you at my school there is a much larger percentage than three. Even if there were three black female med students, why should it be any more difficult for them to seek out advice and support from me than from another student of the same sex/race, unless she is already carrying pre-established stereotypical views of who I am? Any no, I had the fortunate ability to be part of a first year class as part of a post-bacc program last year, and there were established cliques between different racial groups.
 
I understand the OP. I was taught to be accepting and honestly I am. I don't judge people on gender or race. However I walk around my campus and see organizations like black fraternities and sororities and organizations for women in things like engineering. Now if these were made for whites or males it would be racist or sexist. I go on websites to apply for jobs and internships and see things encouraging diversity. As much as people try to say it is something else it means "not white guys".

There are programs for women in male dominated fields encouraging them to get into things like engineering and computer science. However there are fields that women dominate too. Particularly Pharmacy, Veterinary, and Nursing. I have never seen a program encouraging men to get into these.

I am sure some are saying well white guys have had their hayday and they oppressed women and minorities. Yeh they did but those white guys are mostly dead. Most white guys today have never done such a thing and associating them with it is just as sexist and racist as anything.

We all want to put an end to discrimination but honestly as long as we define people by things like race and gender it will never go away.
