Duke had an excellent match list this year, with most students matching at top programs. Harvard hospitals, Duke, University of Pennsylvania, UC-San Francisco. I do not have an electronic copy to post.

Does anyone have Georgetown's Match List?

To the people who are saying that match lists are not a good way to compare schools... do you have any suggestions about what are some good ways to compare schools? And I mean personal preferences aside - obviously everyone has different preferences regarding location, cost, etc. But what are some good objective ways to compare schools? Average board scores? Match lists?

Thanks for helping!

I think I once read on SDN that a quick and dirty way to compare match lists is to look just at internal medicine and see if people are matching into places you've never heard of or big, academic medical centers.

Don't really know if that's a good idea or not...

It's definitely one way to do it. I guess the way I do it is to look over and get an overall geshtalt - the problem with trying to compare is that there are a lot of personal reasons that go into it. Also, if a lot of people are matching at home institution, is that good because the home institution happens to be strong and people liked the location or bad because they couldn't leave? Can't know if they had the option of leaving and chose not to take it. Also, some people specifically go for community hospitals knowing they don't want to specialize or go into academic medicine, specificallly so they won't have to work as hard. And also, people who are couples matchcing with a spouse/fiance(e)/life partner/BFF (OK, kidding on that last part) who is applying to a very competitive specialty (or is a weaker applicant in their specialty relative to the spouse) when they are not may end up somewhere less desirable because they have to go wherever the more competitive-applying person matches. Finally, I will admit that as a pre-med, and indeed, even as a 4th year med student, I don't know what "the best" programs are in the various specialties. Medicine follows the med schools tierings pretty accurately, but EM especially as well as several other fields are a whole new ballgame.

It's definitely a fool's game, but I would say if most of the matches in a field you think you might be interested look like places you would be happy at, I would say that's a good sign.

I thought there were only two spots, or does Stanford take two now?

Yeah apparently Stanford has two spots and UPenn has the third.

There are only three spots for thoracic surgery in the nation?

These residency spots are for a direct track into thoracic surgery as opposed to a prolonged more common one via general surgery

I wonder how competitive those spots were. Probably quite a bit, which is funny since CT fellowships had a 60% fill rate a couple years ago and would take anyone with a pulse.

Maybe the pendulum will swing the other way eventually, with the accumulation of evidence against stents. Not yet though.

anyone have UofA - Tucson??
Here it is. Really don't know how much this is really worth if you don't know the people or where they wanted to end up.

I wish that instead of showing match lists, schools would show the % of students who matched into one of their top 3 or 5 choices or the % that got into the specialty they wanted the most.

anyone that can post University of Toledo's match list?

I am going to a student officer's meeting tomorrow, and I believe we are going to spend part of the time talking about this year's match list. If I get any information, I will post here. I know they were really proud this year.

Some info I already have: "Institutions where students matched include the most competitive academic programs in the country - Harvard, the Mayo Clinic, and the University of Michigan...A total of 58, or 43 percent, of graduating UT medical students are entering the primary care field, while 74, or 55 percent, are entering other specialties...will disperse to 25 states outside of Ohio...40 percent of students will remain in Ohio..."

this has to be the most ridiculous match list i have ever seen.

Really? Are you sure? How do you even define that? Do you assign points to each program and add them up? Our eyes are drawn to certain big names and gloss over most everything else. Duke's match list is very impressive this year (I'm not gonna stand in Student Affairs copying it down to post on SDN), but what REALLY matters is that I know the people in my graduating class and I know that a very large majority got their first choice in whatever specialty and those that didn't got their second choice at a phenomenal institution. I think percentages getting their first, second, third choice, etc and number of students that had to change specialties because of competitiveness would be more telling data.

Looks like someone has Pennis envy!

I kid, I kid.

There are only three spots for thoracic surgery in the nation?

CT surgery is usually a fellowship after a general surgery residency. These 3 spots are integrated 6-7 year programs.

CT surgery is usually a fellowship after a general surgery residency. These 3 spots are integrated 6-7 year programs.

These 3 spots are not really integrated thoracic. They are direct cardiac surgery. There are several programs across the country that have had an integrated thoracic curriculum (Barnes-Jewish/Wash U, for one) that you switch into after being accepted into a categorical gen surg position. The direct cardiac is new this year, and is currently only offered by Penn and Stanford (1 & 2 spots, respectively). It is different in that you do minimal general surgery and have, instead, months of endovascular/IR and cardiac surgery (which is not offered in many gen surg curriculums now that the RRC has removed number requirements from that specialty). You then get CT (ABTS) certification but no ABS certification...very similar in concept to the integrated vascular programs.

Penn pulled internally this year. Stanford got a Penn student & and a Vandy student. All 3 have worked in cardiac surgery for exposure and research throughout medical school...these positions will only get more competitive from here, esp given the institutions.

Um, this document has names in it. That's identifying information and you should not post this as such. You need to de-identify the data here.

Family Medicine 5-6?
haha, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if no one in my class went into FM. I don't know a single person who wants to for some reason  For my class, I predict 8 ortho, 7 EM, 5 ophtho, 5 rads as the most popular (besides IM). Just a guess.

No you don't.

I would be upset to find out that someone had taken this information about me and posted it on the internet. It's rude to do without permission.

Yeah forgot to mention that 6 or so went into emergency medicine, if not more.

It's a national phenomenon of fewer and fewer matches in FM I think. There were probably 4-5 who matched in FM from my school this year. You see so many more people matching into rads, ophtho, anesthesia for the obvious reasons - more money, good lifestyle.

I don't know if anyone posted for FSU, but here it is. They don't do names or locations I don't think, but you can see the speciality spread. I think it is pretty on par with other schools, despite the heavy push towards primary care. The classes will start getting bigger soon, I believe they just got up to near full speed last year or this year...can't remember.

They SHOULD do it, whether they do is another story. Maybe they signed a waiver saying it was alright, but who knows. The name of the person doesn't really seem relevant to me, no idea why they leave those on.

There are no addresses, no phone numbers and most will be moving soon. What is wrong with having the names on a match list? Its not covered by HIPPA, is it?

I guess if you would be ashamed to graduate from Medical School and secure a residency, I guess I would ask off the list. If you wanted to lie about your placement or you were hiding in some kind of witness protection program, I would be concerned, otherwise, who cares.

I agree with you, but as soon as you are licensed your name, training, malpractice data, and other personal info becomes fully available to the public on various websites so physicians cant keep this info private.

Does anyone have the 2008 Albany Med Match List?

Wayne State University, Detroit MI
Match List 2008

Some rough match stats, I may have missed a few but this is basically it. Not bad this year, 5 in derm, 9 in ortho, and 7 in ophtho. Emergency was most popular (33) this year for the first time beating internal medicine (32). Anesthesiology also jumped to 21 people this year. About 60% wanted to stay in Michigan, the rest went out of state.

Has anyone posted the match list for NJMS and Creighton?

There are no addresses, no phone numbers and most will be moving soon. What is wrong with having the names on a match list? Its not covered by HIPAA (fixed for you), is it?

...

It's not HIPAA, it's FERPA. My school publishes the list without the names on it (it also still has the FERPA explanation), but it sends out the match list with names to the students, so we can see where friends matched. Here's what's put on the bottom of our list. Note, this is taken from the public version with the names removed. The FERPA thing probably isn't necessary on the one without names.

Please note: This information is intended for your use only. Student record information is protected by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). No information regarding an individual student, other than that defined as directory information, may be communicated to a third party without the express written consent of the student.

I haven't gone through the match yet, but I don't think I'd like my name put out there with the list. It's easy enough to figure out institutional emails, find people on social websites, etc.

Exactly. It's a few short steps from an SDNer saying where they go to school from comparing a match list to MySpace to who knows where.
