There has been quite a bit of disagreement about touching the screen during the DAT, so I e-mailed the ADA ([email protected]). Here are the questions that I asked and the response from ADA:
I have a couple of questions about the DAT and I have heard conflicting answers. I want to make sure I follow the rules, so could you please clarify:
1) Are we allowed to touch the screen? (i.e. Can we cover up the tail of an angle with our fingers on angle ranking questions?)
2) Can we hold two objects over the screen to rank angles? (i.e. laminated paper or credit cards)
3) If not, are we allowed to hold our thumb/fingers near our eyes?
4) If any of the above are not allowed, what happens if someone gets caught violating these rules?
Thank you for contacting the ADA with your questions. You are not allowed to touch the computer screen or hold your hands or any objects up to the computer screen. You are also not allowed to hold your hands, thumbs, fingers or any objects near your eyes. The reason for this is that your hands, fingers and other objects are considered measuring devices. Taking any of these actions would be considered a violation of the DAT regulations.
In your last email you asked what would happen if you got caught violating these regulations. If you are caught violating the regulations for the DAT your scores will be voided, you may be prevented from retaking the DAT for up to two years and there may also be civil and legal penalties.
