I'm taking four 1-credit courses this semester
Does it look bad if i'm taking all of these 1-credit classes?

Oh, its just for the summer, I thought you meant fall when you said semester. As humidbeing said, take what you want, its summer, it won't really matter (unless you bomb them LOL)

Why take them now... if they're easy, just tack them onto to your courseload during the fall or spring

Well, as long as you're taking enough classes to make it a respectable load, it won't look bad. Warning: 1 credit courses often take more than one credit worth of time.

So you're taking 4 regular courses at 3 credit hours a piece. Well 12 credit hours is generally the minimum load so you have met it with those classes already. I wouldn't see why they would fault you for taking a few extra classes that interest you... However, it would probably "look better" to take 5 regular courses for 15 hours and perhaps 2 of these 1 credit hour courses (for 17 total), but it probably won't matter that much either way.

my real question here, which you kind of touched on, is lets two people both are taking 17 credits; for one, these 17 credits are comprised mostly of 1-credit courses, for the other, its comprised of 3-4 credit courses, will an adcom look at these two people and view the latter more seriously, or does it not matter, and credits are credits no matter how they break down?

No. As long as you take a normal courseload. Hell, you could take 16 1 credit courses if you wanted to.
