I've seen the support group for those with 40+ secondaries. Now here is the spot for those of us too poor to do that, who had to limit ourselves to less than ten (hopefully carefully selected schools)

I picked eight...

Nine...four of them my state schools.

UAB. 😍

If you're curious I just posted a whole explaination of this on the last page of the Alabama Schools thread. 😛

I just didn't want to pay to apply to schools that I knew I wouldn't go to. But I do think it would be really exciting to be applying all over the country and not know where I was going to end up next year... whether I get in next year not, I will be in B'Ham, AL next year. 🙄

I applied to 9!

I applied to two, both state schools. Those were the two that I thought that I had the best chance of getting into and I don't have tons of money to waste.

Wow... I thought I was doing bad by applying to only 5 😱 ... two state schools and 3 out of rangers that I wanted to apply to just for fun... guess you can call it pre-med splurging 😛

Eight for me as well..

How much does the average secondary cost? Excuse my pre-med ignorance; still at pre-MCAT stage.

Is there a club for people with more than ten but nowhere near 40? Or better yet can I apply for an honorary membership in this club with my 11? My advisor told me that the national average of schools people apply to was 12, so needless to say I was shocked to see so many people (on SDN at least) that apply to 30+ schools. I don't know how people can find that many schools they absolutely love, let alone have that kind of money to throw around. I intially only had about 8 schools, but then fell into the pressure of adding a few more to put my mind at ease, so perhaps those 30+ people just lack confidence? Either way I think they must be rich and crazy to attempt it. 🙂

I'm only applying to 6 or 7 schools

6 here too.

I'm just too cheap to apply to many schools. And I can't stand paying nearly $40,000 per year for a private med school.

So pretty much only applied to state schools.

7 in all, 5 that I have a realistic shot of getting into. I'm short on money too, but I don't even have a state school to apply to, so it's pretty much private all the way.

I applied to nine as well. it's a good number.

I wish I had four state schools like you people in FL. 😛 My state only has two.

Here's hoping we all get in somewhere!

I applied to 10 schools... I think it had something to do with SDN, because I became paranoid about my chances and read somewhere that the average is around 10.

2 state schools
2 former state schools
2 schools in the region
3 reach schools
1 school way out there (Univ of Utah) - Didn't quite pay attention to their secondary requirements... and you guys think Duke is bad! They want a LOR from everyone except your mother! I was misled by their small number of overall applicants, but now I see why.

Eight. Only one state school here (and it has only accepted 2 people from my in-state alma mater in 10 years to my knowledge), so the rest are pretty spread out. Even worse, no word from my state school post-secondary. *sigh*

I applied to 22 on my AMCAS and then I felt something inside my brain snap!!!!! After three weeks of looking even closer at the schools I decided on 9 of them (only 7 secondaries sent out though... waiting for 2 more...)
My friends thought i was nuts to take off some of the schools i did.
But you know what? I applied to under 10, and i still managed to get interviews at albert einstein, mayo (phone...still waiting post phone), and state (so does everyone) .... so it's okay to be under 10... we're cool people too... cool people with discretion 🙂

It varies based on schools. I think there used to be a list somewhere, on SDN, but I don't remember if it still exists.

I just know that each schools is different. Actually it can get even more expensive then the range Brett gave, like up to $110 or more. Or it could be cheaper then his range and be something like $50 something dollars.

well, I put 13 on the AMCAS, but I filled out 10 secondaries - and I'm even regretting some of those. So much money!

I'm applying the next cycle but I doubt I will apply any place outside of TX (and I'm not applying to Baylor). Since I'm a texas resident that's my best shot at getting in. It's not worth the wasted money to apply outside the state as I put my shot at getting in anywhere else at around 25%.

I think those of us with 10 or fewer are doing pretty well so far 🙂

Good luck to everybody. I think the trick is picking the right mix of schools to apply to. As long as you do that, it doesn't matter if you apply to 10 or fewer!

applied only to the 4 UCs (not davis.. not a big fan of the area). figured i would give my best shot at them this year because they are all good and relatively cheap. as a late-in-the-game econ major, i figured i could improve my ECs if i didnt get in anywhere this time around and reapply to a wider range next year.... although, i was hoping the MCAT would push me over the top, but having just received a 31 on the aug mcat makes this cycle seem like more of a stretch. sucks, 1 or 2 more points would have really stuck me in the middle of their MCAT acceptance stats.
