Hey, I had a question regarding this product. Do these videos come with questions either in video or on the side? or is it just learning through listening to the lecture?

Thank you!

Who are the instructors for the videos?

Have you seen a significant difference in the scores of students who have taken the MCAT both before and after watching the DVD set?

  • I would say that it is about 3/4 lecture style and 1/4 problem based
  • If you go to Youtube and search MCAT Physics, the #1 video is an example of a physics problem as it is solved in the DVDs

Who are the instructors for the videos?

  • Dr. Ferdinand

Have you seen a significant difference in the scores of students who have taken the MCAT both before and after watching the DVD set?

  • There are no studies based solely and having prepared using these DVDs.
  • The one study we did was to follow up students who look our complete package over 3 years and 2/3rds were admitted to medical school.

I have been trying to do research on which study guide to choose. This forum has been the most helpful. :)

Do these DVD's follow the same format as the Gold Standard manual? What is the best way that you feel one should integrate these DVDs into studying with the Gold Standard program? Do you suggest watching the DVD on a particular section first and then going into the manual?

The Gold Standard is a fully integrated program: each chapter in the book suggests a specific DVD which can be used as a lecture. Each chapter also has specific chapter review questions (of course they come free with the book) with explanations with direct links to videos and to forum threads for each question in order to promote discussion. All our practice tests also refer back to specific book chapters or DVDs for background information.

Are the chapter review questions based on passages or are they free standing practice questions?

In your opinion do these videos provide all the information necessary to do well on the MCAT?

Would you say that using the DVDs are a supplement to the review books and a prep course or would they be sufficient to use on their own?

No. Think of the videos like the lectures for a class where the teacher explains the most frequently tested concepts and relevant strategies but refers to the textbook as the source for all the details.

They are a supplement as underlined in the answer to the previous question. (don't worry, I know you could not have seen that answer already!) :)

How are you able to pack all 4 yrs of sciences into such a short period of time? Is it more of an equation review or does Dr. Ferdinand explore topics in depth?

The Gold Standard MCAT textbook is about 1000 pages and covers everything for the MCAT. Consider the DVDs like the lecture for a course: the teacher will explain the key concepts, do examples of all the most likely exam questions but if you are aiming for 100%, you need to hit the book and use the lectures (videos) as a supplement.
