Discussion in 'Pre-Medical - MD' started by BlameItOnTheNurse, Mar 16, 2002.

  1. Howdy everyone,
    jsut 2 quick questions?
    1. I hear all this talk about miami giving out scholarships, yet at the interview Dr Hinkley, the finacial aide dude, and the students said very few people get scholarships. i am a white male. Am i screwed? Please, no racial jokes

    2. What is up with the rumor that Florida med students are having a hard time passing the USMLE?? is it a rumor or is this a fact. hell, i dont intend to struggle on another test.

Knowledge is power. So are big breast.

  2. 1. no racial jokes about being white?? where do you think you are--you must NOT think you're in the US....

    2. i heard that rumor too...i believe it. i believe it because they didn't interview me, and i believe it because there's truth behind almost every rumor.

    3. big breasts ARE power!! :D

    2. Nobody at UF admitted to the rumor, my tour guide said she has never met the people who failed and doesn't believe it. My student host said she had heard it but doesnt believe it. Then again, I heard a rumor that 5 people have dropped out during 1st year at UF!

Another thing to note is that, as my interviewer stated at UF, "our curriculum is like women's fashion." They change it in response to whaever the students want. So I guess it is constantly improving. They have recently reduced lecture time so you can study more on your own. I think this would help on the boards. Going to class from 1-5 instead of 8-5 would guve lots of extra study time :) . Then again, some could argue that they learn better in the traditional lecture setting. If so, don't go to UF :p :p :p

My freind who attends the med school at UM received a whopping scholarship (well, I think so). I think it was ~20K a year, for all four years. He is white and he was also an out-of-stater. His MCAT was very high (38T) and he also had a cum gpa >=3.8.

  6. daisy girl,
guess i am screwed cuz my #'s arent anywhere close to your friends stats. They might provide me with a handgun for protection though. That has got to be worth a few hundred bucks. J/K

So do UF student go to class 1-5 now. seems kind of short. I know i am not going there anyways, just curious.

how about other Fl schools. What are the schedules like. Any 8-5, get fat in class in Fl?

So knowing that UF students cant pass the usmle, why do all of you rank the school so high. i know it has prestige, but wouldn't you hate to struggle on the damn test and how will that affect your residency? Is residency based on usmle II?

  7. that's hilarious. i think they DO provide matriculating students with their own handguns at UM, but you have to buy the bullets from the bums that hang out all around the medical school....

UF has a nice ranking and is so cheap that you gotta love it, but i don't know how much better the residency matches are than UM's. because while it's likely that UF's basic sciences are better, Jackson hospital is grrrrrrreat. so i'd rather train at UM. but, i'd rather live and pay tuition at UF...so UF is a winner in my book (plus they're supposedly and apparently moving up in rankings this year which could help their res matches even more). but i think UM students might do better on the boards, although i have no numbers to substantiate this claim, and might very well just be making it up..but i believe it because the school focuses a lot on it (give them lots of time to focus on it by ending spring classes early in second year, i believe).

anyway, my wallet and my (pot)head tell me that UF is best.

I love UF since I have so far been ignored by UM. But I think UF is better mainly because of the happiness factor. And after going to an unhappy undergrad, I want to go to a med school where people are nice and helpful and smile at each other :D :D :D

I also think that, just like people from ANY undergrad can score high on the mcat, I bet people from any med school can score high on the USMLE. It just depends on the person. Uf just got unlucky with those 7 people if it's true.

  9. caveman,
part of the 50K tuition goes to handing a few bucks daily to the bums in the streets. It's call preventative medicine.
probably causes liver disease. just think about it, job security

I first heard the "rumor", which I don't think it is, that UF had 7 people fail the USMLE while working at Shands. A 3rd year med student told me. When I made this claim on SDN, Cobragirl confirmed it and said it was 9 (I'm pretty certain she said it was 9). I do think that UF had this many people fail. I also think that they are trying to remedy this by admitting a bunch of IVY students (who have good test taking skills).

UF is good, but it's not worth punching a hole in the wall over (which I've been tempted to do numerous times). I can't wait to read their lame ass rejection letter.

I would have loved to stay here because I have an apartment close to the med school, tuition is cheap, the education is pretty good, my friends are here, I know the location, etc...

    Cheering for the Gators from afar won't be the same. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

I agree that the "rumor" is probably true. I know one of the med students told me that at UF, you get off a little under two weeks before the Step I. At Miami I think they said they have over a month. I agree that a poor score is more likely due to a lack of individual effort than an overall deficit in curriculum. As for the difference between UF and Miami, from what I've determined, UF has a better basic science department, but Miami's clinical facilities are ten times better. Unfortunately it will cost you on the order of about $30G more a year to go to Miami. So I guess the moral is that Miami will prepare you better for your residency with better clinical experience but UF will prepare you better for life after medical school with a lot less debt. For me, what it boils down to is the area that each school is in. I've lived in Gainesville for 4 years and I love it. However, my idea of a good Saturday night does not always involve going out to a club. I know many people who came up here and have been fighting to get out for the past four years. The clubs and bars here pale in comparison to Miami. But if you're more of an "outdoorsy" type like myself, there's multiple opportunities for things to do much closer than they would be in Miami. That being said, I haven't gotten an acceptance from either school yet and I would happily attend either school. But I would say that UF is my first choice, but for personal much more than educational reasons. :D
