1. If you start at a medical school as an OOS student can you obtain residency status during your tenure there, or are you paying OOS tuition all 4 years?

2. The AMCAS Application Instruction Manual makes it sound like you have to apply to medical schools all at once, but on the forums people make it sound like you can apply to additional medical schools whenever you want. Which is it?

1. Generally not, there are a few schools (or states, rather) that make exceptions.

2. You can add more schools down the line. Generally it's better to have your schools picked out from the get-go though, as otherwise you're just arbitrarily wasting time. But if you suddenly want to apply to X, you can send a primary their way when you decide to.

It depends on the state and school, and your specific situation. Ohio is apparently very easy on gaining in state status. More importantly, it depends on you. If you are only there for school, supported by your parents, and go home for vacation, no chance. If you live there, have a lease, get a state driver's license, pay taxes, register to vote, stay over vacation, are financially independent, have a spouse with a job, join a church/temple, etc, much better chance.

1) Definitely depends on the state. In NY, for example, you can have resident status in as little as a year. In Oregon, if you come to the state for the purposes of education you can't become a resident until after your schooling is over. Look into this on a state-by-state basis.

2) You apply to schools through AMCAS, and when you add schools is your business. Just be aware that schools have different application deadlines. One school may have an October deadline while another may have a February deadline. Technically, you can add a school up until its deadline has passed, but you must add it through AMCAS (unless it is a texas school, etc), and your chances go down more the longer you wait to add a school.
