There was some discussion of Ayn Rand some time ago. I've heard they are supposed to be a real good author and have thought about reading some of their books if I get some time.

Are the Neurology and Neurosurgery numbers from the SF match? Or did some programs match through NMRP as well?

I don't know...sorry. I'll find out from my classmate who matched into neuro surg.

What is SF match?? How does this differ from NMRP??? Thanks in advance. I know this was stated once before but I have forgotten and am curious.

Also OP: So you are an MS4 then??? If so, what field were you trying to match in??? I wish you luck on Thursday in finding out where you matched at.

wow, congrats! i hope you get your top choice! this is definitely a much more nerve wracking process than med school apps... :scared:

I thought that on Match day you find out what you matched into and where you are going...so is that not the case? Do you find out what you matched into before match day, and then where you are actually going on match day?

my bro just found out he got matched into radiology. he's stoked. but still has no idea where he's going (til thursday)

basically people found out today whether or not they WERE matched (for the sake of those that didn't match to be spared the embarassment of not showing up to match day, and to try and figure out an alternate course ASAP)
thursday is the day they find out where

Almost and totally depends. On Monday of Match Week you find out only if you matched, but if you only ranked one type of program you at least know what your going into. On Thursday, you find out where.
On the other hand, if like me you went into an extremely competitive specialty like Plastic Surgery, you likely interviewed and ranked some "backups". I only ranked one general surgery program, last of 13 ranks. While i did match, there is still that shot in the dark i did not match to plastics, we will see come Thursday.

Correct. On Monday of Match Week (i.e. "black monday" for some) you find out IF you matched. Those who have not matched have a few days to "scramble" into an open spot or some other specialty. That way they don't have to feel so bad on Thursday of Match week when everybody finds out WHERE they matched.

Good luck to all the pre-meds!!! You'll be done with med school before you know it.. the time flys by!

damn. how many programs can you rank?

You can rank as many programs and as many specialties as you want...but it costs extra money after 15 or 16 places. if you want to rank more than one specialty you will need to get LORs in each specialty in order to get interviews in each specialty...which is kind of a pain in the a$$. Plus you will have to write personal statements for each specialty. And if one specialty finds out that you are applying to something else besides their specialty they might question your "devotion" to their specialty. That having been said .. if you apply to derm with an IM medicine backup they would probably understand because IM is so much less competitive it kinda makes sense but if you apply to derm and ENT (both very competitive) they might frown upon that.

It costs like $30 per additional school once you get over 15 (and it costs something to rank the first 15 too).

can you please explain this "scramble" concept to me?? if you don't match into a program, do you just call up program directors and ask if they have spots left over? would this be at a program that you interviewed at but didnt match??

i'm confused a little.

How ever many you interviewed at.

I think you can rank ones that you did not interview at....and I've heard that some people do just in case of some "miracle" screw-up etc...but seems silly and may cost extra money.

On another note future med students....remember that when you make your rank list for residency, rank the programs in the order that you would prefer (even if you think you have no chance at getting into your number one) because the system is set up to benefit the applicant and thus you cannot "hurt" yourself by "out-ranking" yourself. You will be surprised by how many 4th-year med students still dont understand this concept....and probably hurt themselves in the match by not putting their "dream" program first. If you want to read about the algorithm click here

From the NRMP website:
Applicant Ford would be very pleased to end up at State, where she had a very good clerkship, and believes they will rank her high on their list. Although, she does not think she has much of a chance she prefers City, General, or Mercy, so she ranks them higher and ranks State fourth. This applicant is using NRMP to maximum advantage.

I think you and the dean of your med school make phone calls to programs with open spots. This would probably NOT be at programs that you interviewed at but didnt match at because they already decided they dont want you (but I guess it couldnt hurt to ask again, anybody know more about this?). A few people are lucky to "scramble" into competiive specialties like radiology etc but most end up scrambling into less-competitive things like ER or a gen surg prelim year and hope to re-match the following year. Whew...I'm so glad I don't know about this firsthand. Sorry to those that do....good luck.

From the NRMP website:

What is the Scramble?

The Scramble is the period of time during which unmatched or partially matched applicants attempt to obtain positions in unfilled programs. The Scramble begins at noon eastern time on Tuesday of Match Week after the Dynamic List of Unfilled Programs is posted to the NRMP Web site. Applicants who contact programs prior to noon eastern time on Tuesday of Match Week are in material breach of the Match Participation Agreement.

You can but unless the program knows who you are it doesnt matter, they arent going to rank you. The only other way i know you can is if you did sub-i's and the program considers this your interview and says so. A couple programs did that this year. Programs only rank ppl that interview or rotate, well at least for competitive specialties.

You are absolutely correct.. but I know of at least one person whe graduated last year who (as more of a joke to kinda screw the med-school by lowering his match number (you know..."everybody at our school gets their top 3 etc")) ranked a few places he never even interviewed or rotated at very high on his list. i know its stupid but kinda funny. anyway..you are absolutely correct.
