US News and World Reports ranking of medical schools is a waste of time for medical students, particarly the research rankings, which are based largely on research money.

So the same schools in the top 5 as last year (but with a slight order jockying), Mich and Columbia fell out of the top 10 and yale climbed back in. Interesting.

That's funny. When I was at Columbia, a total of 7 students said "...since we're a top 10 school..." to me at some point during the day. What will they talk about to next year's applicants?!?!

I have no idea. Doesn't seem as patently implausible as it might if someone made it up. We will know if a few days, I guess.
Having been accepted to all of those schools this is a big deal to me, oh wait I haven't been accepted by any of those school so this isn't a big deal to me. By the way I came up with me own rankings based on my system:
1 Duke
2 UNC
3 CCLCM
4 UNC*
5 Hopkins

*UNC is awesome, 2005 National Champs, nice weather, so they get on there twice, other schools lost point based on location and not being interesting enough to apply to.

As you can tell I'm kind of a deal and thus these ranks should replace USNWR

Tell that to the students that will most likely use these rankings to make their final decisions on where to matriculate. Sad, but it's true.

If you have a chance, can you find out what cornell and columbia are ranked?

Thanks

Well, I mean if UPitt is #16 and Vanderbilt is #17, taking UPitt is a nobrainer, right? Never mind the curriculums, geographical differences or your own personal feelings about the schools...

Just scan the page and attach the pic.

I dont have the mag, a friend does and manually typed some schools

Why are people so interested in these rankings? Are people actually basing their decision on **** like this?? Shouldn't the decision be based on how you see yourself at the school?

Yes it is. Finally some reason, your the man.
I see myself at X school under a banner that says "x-SOM, ranked in the top 10"
oh wait i guess these ranks do matter or I couldn't get my banner

i thought someone already posted the 2007 us news rankings.... they got an early edition from an editor there.... but here they are again. i saved them the last time they were posted

That thread agreed that it was obviously fake, the guy switched around the top ten and left everything else the same. I can't believe someone would go through the trouble to do that...malicious and ridiculous.

I think that the OPs data might be real. What would be great is if you friend could scan the pic in, but I guess that might be copywrite infringement. I think everyones looking forward to seeing the rest. Yes, we all know to take it with a grain of salt. I still find these rankings valuable to gauge schools...but you can definitely NOT compare/differentiate them when they are ranked closely, nothing is clearcut.

Something to notice: When people put up a poll to ask "which school should I choose", they almost always go (for the most part) according to the U.S. News Research Ranks, or very close to...They do a good job to gauge "reputation"...

Because it allows people to flex their e-peen.
I think it's great because most of these research dollars go to PhDs and basic science researchers - you know, the huge group of people for which a lot of pre-meds seem to have nothing but disdain.

It's all about the drama! I'm more interested in SDNers' reactions. The fall of the Neon 'H', the broken dreams. :meanie:

OP is correct. I am holding the magazine.

to all of you who are screaming that research rankings don't matter
to me, residency director scores do matter and while it's been a long time since i compared the two lists, i seem to remember that the overall research rankings mirrored the residency director rankings quite closely

hey, does someone still have that us news rankings trend post from a while back? the one where someone compiled the last five years' rankings and we saw how schools were moving.

I started that thread... let me see if I can dig it up in my profile

why were people thinking this was made up?

..how can baylor be so low in research..they received a 100 million dollars a couple of months ago!@!!!

Or maybe there are other factors involved besides research money that im not aware of

because outside of the juggled top schools every single number (i.e. GPA, NIH funding, MCAT) for every school, as well as its rank, was exactly the same as last year. Also, there were a bunch of non-sequiters, like Harvard losing half of its NIH funding over night.

I think it's only useful in a very general sense. There's certainly a difference in reputation for two schools who are 40 spots apart, but I don't care much about reputation anyway (not to say that it doesn't matter at all, but still - I'm not going to choose one school over the other because one is ranked two spots higher). I truly don't believe rankings are indicative of the quality of education a particular school provides because I've seen many schools on the interview trail that, although they weren't ranked particularly high, offered a terrific education. I'm beating a dead horse here with all the comments on this board, but it's still true. 😉

What about the hospital rankings? Anyone got those? Thank you!

I'm going to take a wild guess.... Johns Hopkins Hospital is #1?

Do you guys really believe these rankings? I have a hard time falling for this...Right, US News just allowed the rankings to leak out, and the guy who found them is only willing to type 1-10 and 40-50. Hmm, does this sound likely? 😎
