Not new decisions? (While having my heart attack) I was wondering what happened to the acceptance phone calls. 😉 So if we see a letter and haven't had an acceptance phone call, that wouldn't be good thing, right?

I'm assuming they're the 12 (or whatever) acceptances that went out last month.

Correct. To clarify, people who received phone calls before the New Year, as part of the initial 12 (or whatever) acceptances, should have received their formal acceptance letters by, say, today or tomorrow, judging by the fact I received mine in Detroit on Friday. This isn't a new round of acceptances.

But what about this part of the post
post-interview rejection letters

Are there new rejections?

Right...so...I'm just trying to help you guys out...This may be all wrong...CCLCMer mentioned that she has heard from at least one person out there who got a rejection letter, so those types of letters are/have already gone out *for the last round I assume* I'm sure she'll chime in and correct me if I'm wrong (assuming they went out en masse then they all should have arrived within a day or two of that person's rejection letter. Unless you live in Papua New Guinnea. 🙁)

Just got my hold letter in the mail for CCLCM.... It says not to expect to hear back till April 15th. I thought we were going to be considered during the two subsequent rounds. guess things have changed.

😕 😱 😕 😱 Letters for both rejections and acceptances?
Yes. See below.

I'm assuming they're the 12 (or whatever) acceptances that went out last month.
Right. These are the 12 acceptance letters from the December subcommittee meeting, which did not get sent out until last week. Like I said in an earlier post, our admissions office is a bit backlogged at the moment. 😳

Again, no new acceptances will be decided upon before next Tuesday. You won't get an acceptance letter without getting a phone call first. So I guess the answer is yes, if you didn't get a phone call last month, and you do get a letter this week, that wouldn't be a good thing. 🙁

There aren't really "rounds" for rejection letters. The rejections are not decided at the subcommittee meetings. Those meetings are only to consider people who might be accepted. So rejections are being sent out to applicants who weren't ranked highly enough after a Thursday biweekly meeting review.

I know this is really confusing, so I'll try to explain it as well as I can. For the entire fall semester, the adcomm had been ranking interviewed applicants on a scale from 1 to 4 during the Thursday biweekly meetings. These scores are used to determine which applicants get reviewed for possible acceptance at the subcommittee meetings. However, the cutoffs are not hard and fast from year to year, so no rejections are sent out before the cutoff score is decided. That happens around this time of the year, after a large enough number of people have interviewed. Now that the admissions staff has a fairly good idea about which scores will definitely be too low for those applicants to be considered at a subcommittee meeting, the people who fall below that cutoff will be getting rejection letters. Post-interview rejections will continue to be sent out now on a more regular basis. Again, however, this is NOT dependent on the subcommittee meetings, because those meetings are ONLY for deciding on acceptances.

Can someone give me reasons to choose Case over UCSD? I really liked Case from my interview, but what little desire I have to move to Cleveland over San Diego is faltering of late...

I suggest that you wait until you get your financial aid packages. Also, if you can, try to go to both second looks. For me, those were the two things that helped the most with making the decision, even though I wasn't initially all gung-ho about moving to Cleveland either.

the biggest turn off about ucsd is that it's NOT pass/fail

o wow..that's a really hard choice then.

ya the only thing I didn't like about UCSD was their current grading and curriculum, which are both changing for this next year to be pretty similar to case's..

Just received a post-interview hold letter from CCLCM. Any thoughts?

Hi!

I called the admissions office today and they said they wont be looking at applications on hold (post-interview) until after Feb 26.

So I guess the answer is yes, if you didn't get a phone call last month, and you do get a letter this week, that wouldn't be a good thing. 🙁

That's how I read your post. At this point in the cycle, news is news. And I'd rather know sooner than later. Good luck everybody.

Wow. just got a post-interview rejection letter for CCLCM. I interviewed all the way back in October. Wasn't expecting that. 🙁

hey Toadsworth,
sorry to hear about this. mind sharing your interview experience at cclcm? like, did you think you did really well? so, you're surprised about the new that you received today? thx so much

...and Case is very pro-Gaul.

Hahahahah just realized I skimmed over this without making the connection... Down with the Romans, and point for Case! How did you ever get to read Asterix and Obelix? I've met very few other Americans who know them...

For those of you placed on hold, did they designate a category for the hold list? For example, I received a letter placing me on the "High Hold List." Do they also send letters placing people on the "Hold List" or "Low Hold List?"

Also, if anyone knows, what are my chances on the High Hold List? CCLCM is still my #1 and I don't want to give up yet!

Hahaha...as if you have to ask....
My brother even read it in Euskadi - Basque 😎
Myuu is cool like that too...

Yes, here at Case we speak Nerd in many, many languages and cultures...

...In fact...pull a guy straight out of the Amazon forest and he'll I.D. me as a nerd at 20 paces....

... and point for Case!
Excellent: You can take that one to the Bank...Those dweebs over in the UCSD probably have no clue...bleh...mediocre nerds they are! This is where you belong...don't fight it.

Ok...I'll put it up on the Board:

CWRU: 1
UCSD: 0
:meanie:

P.S. We also suffer from less Skin Cancer here...but Vitamin D supplements are annoying...FWIW

Ah, yes, but if you take a certain rather ubiquitous daily multivitamin, you'll get 100% RDA for vitamin D.

Yes...but I was listening to this internal medicine podcast (Medpod101) and he was talking about the serum level's of the active form of Vitamin D (Calcitriol or something?) in the blood of individuals who are outside for long periods (lifeguards, groundskeepers, etc.) and it was something like orders of magnitude above the US RDA (400 IU? if I recall)...and apparently the body is self-limiting in its production so this implication is that this is a more desirable level. Anyhow...long story short: the US RDA is pretty low?

I'm on the High Hold list, and I'm confused as well. Is everyone on hold in high hold? And will we really not hear by April 15 or is there still hope for us in the January subcommittee meetings?

....sooooo....looks like the score is still:

CWRU: 1
UCSD: 0

Haha, I've heard of it too, actually. That's what I get for 4 years of French. But I won't disclose where I go to school, though it is full of nerds (including myself).

placed on post-interview hold for UP today... anyone know how likely it is to get off hold?

My high school French teacher actually had us read Asterix for an assignment. The pro-Gaul comment made me lol literally...and I'm at work >_<

After being a part of this thread, I'm so so happy that I will not be lonely in my nerdiness at Case! (optimistic thinking in an upcoming acceptance letter...sending positive brain waves towards Cleveland...)
I'm somewhat of a clandestine nerd. I don't generally radiate waves of nerdiness that someone could tell by just looking at me, but get to know me a bit and you'll see the wealth of nerdiness that runs deep inside my bone marrow. I was hoping to find more of my kind, yay! 😍

Sorry I have no idea....when did you interview? They mentioned at my interview Jan 4 that they're meeting again this week to do another round of reviews.... >_<

Hmmm...we should check your serum nerdiness levels...A 12 hour nerd fasting challenge test of course...to make sure.

Ok, so what I was told is that both high hold and hold mean that you're still being considered for acceptance. Whether you are on hold or high hold has to do with your ranking after one of the Thursday meetings.

Oh, and I keep forgetting to ask:

What is Case Med, CCF, or Univ. Hosp. doing in response to Haiti? Are there any interesting efforts you guys know about? Are the students in particular doing anything?
A lot of people are donating money to organizations like the Red Cross, and some are also volunteering for Medwish.

Soooooo, Biochem is required for CCLCM. If I happen to get accepted, I'd have to take it. Would anyone know of any good online courses?

I've found one on Berkley's website: http://extension.berkeley.edu/cat/course351.html
The school will give you a list of suggested courses you could take.

Thanks CCLCMer! You're always so helpful!

So if I am on the High Hold list, does that mean my chances are still pretty good? How many of us do you think there are, and how many might be taken? Anyone have any speculation?

I'll make sure to fast 12 hours prior to arriving for my "second look"* haha

*optimism 4tw

Holy cow, I stop checking this thread for a bit and it's become so much longer, and I can barely recognize it from reading the last page - well given it's completely different, it's not too surprising. =P

Whoa, CCLCM is sending out holds? If I still haven't heard anything from CCLCM since my October interview, what do my chances look like now?

Nerd fasting... no reading Slashdot for 12 hours! 😀

I attended my third interview yesterday. The school (Univ of Missouri) has a curriculum extremely similar to Case. I loved Case more, though - the atmosphere, the student body, the multiple medical centers to get involved with, and several other reasons.

But they have an amazing simulation center with computerized simulation dolls/mannequins that react to different substances, such as IV glucose and anesthesia which alters their HR BP RR...even their pupils dilate. Also, they had body sections with removable "skins" for mock surgeries and procedures, virtual reality surgery sims, and laparoscopic simulation stations. Blew me away.

Are there similar simulation labs at Case? If so, what are they like? Has anyone had experiences with them that they want to share? (That sounds bad since we're speaking about lifelike mannequins lol)

Yes, that's what it means. I don't know how many people are on hold right now, or even how many people are on high hold versus hold. But if you are on hold, then you are still being considered. The next subcommittee meeting is on Tuesday, and again, approximately ten people will get accepted. Dean Franco will call the accepted people later in the week, like on Thursday or Friday.

One other thing you guys should know is that Dean Franco is getting deluged with letters and updates by email. It's to the point where her mailbox is full and the IT guy refused to give her more space. So please stop sending emails with attachments to her!

Whoa, CCLCM is sending out holds? If I still haven't heard anything from CCLCM since my October interview, what do my chances look like now?
Maybe your letter hasn't come yet. As far as I know, everyone is getting some kind of letter (rejection, hold, or high hold).

Case does have a Sim Center, but we mainly have used it for our OSCEs. These are practice Step 2 exams where you see standardized patients. We also used it for our bridge week at the beginning of third year to do things like learn to suture, do venipuncture, etc. There are mannequins like what you're describing at CCF. I was practicing intubating them a few weeks ago as part of a research project I was asked to participate in. Also, when I was on peds, we ran a mock code on a sim child mannequin like what you're describing. As far as I know, though, the med students don't normally use them in a lab per se. At least, we haven't so far.

One other thing we do to get some of the experiences you're describing is to practice procedures on cadavers. I did suturing, a gyn exam, and laparoscopy on a cadaver during my first two years. The gyn exam was....interesting. I was a first year at the time, and I ended up doing an unanticipated real gyn exam on a real patient in clinic the very next day. You can read the post about it in my blog if you're interested. 😛

Hi CCLCMer!

I too received a hold letter. Will we be considered at the subcommittee meeting this coming tuesday or the next batch of acceptances in feburary?

Poo. Placed on hold. At least it saves me from having to make a hard choice!

Also...they got back to me really fast, I interviewed last Tuesday 1/12. Impressive! Every med school should follow their example 😛

Yes, it's possible that you could be considered next week. Or in February. Or both.
