Anybody have any information on Central Michigan's new medical school? The website states their first class will be inaugurated in the Summer of 2013, but there is absolutely no information of applying, although I did see the school pop-up on amcas list of schools on the application.

As an Michigan resident, I was wondering if anyone had anymore information on the school and I was hoping to use it as my first school to apply to to verify my amcas before my June 21st MCAT score comes out in july.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

The Central Michigan University College of Medicine (CMED) will admit students who have the potential to become outstanding physicians. Our mission is to recruit high caliber students of who will develop the ability to practice medicine in Michigan, the United States, and the world. A primary goal of the College of Medicine is to increase the number of physicians that serve central and northern Michigan and CMED will place a high priority on selecting students who plan to practice in underserved communities in these Michigan regions. CMED will use a holistic admissions process, and will seek to admit students who have personal characteristics and interests that align with CMED’s mission. This admissions process is designed to consider an individual’s application holistically, including cognitive capabilities, the depth of past experiences, and personal attributes and characteristics. It balances the applicant’s academic portfolio with other aspects of their application, such as the capacity for using critical thinking and logic, the understanding of the principles of ethics, personal values, and the qualities that show an applicant’s potential to become outstanding physicians.

To be eligible for admission to CMU CMED, applicants will be required to:

1. Submit all necessary information through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS).
2. Complete and submit scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).
3. Complete an undergraduate baccalaureate degree; with no grade below 2.0 (unless a course has been repeated and a grade of 2.0 or better has been achieved); honors courses will be highly regarded.
4. Course requirements and recommendations – In addition to the required courses listed below, applicants should be successful in a variety of courses, with significant experience in upper level courses, and applicants should take courses that will help to prepare them for the medical curriculum and the MCAT. A list of recommended courses is provided below the list of required courses:

The college courses that will be required for admission to the College of Medicine include:
1. Biology, two semesters (including labs)
2. Organic Chemistry, two semesters (including labs) -OR- Organic Chemistry, one semester and Biochemistry, one semester (including labs).

The college courses that are recommended for preparation for the College of Medicine curriculum and/or the MCAT include:

- Inorganic Chemistry
- Biochemistry
- Physics
- Behavioral Sciences (psychology, sociology, anthropology)
- Medical Humanities
- Communications
- Ethics
- Biostatistics

5. Three letters of recommendation - each letter should be written by an author who is known through a professional relationship, and must have firsthand knowledge of the candidate's qualifications, skills, attributes, and values. Authors must be professionals whose background enables them to determine the applicant’s qualifications. If students apply from a university that provides a composite letter from a premedical program, the composite letter will be accepted. Applicants are encouraged to have letters prepared as early in the application process, and include their social security number and/ or AMCAS ID numbers on the letters. All letters must be receive through AMCAS using one of their acceptable forms of receipt.
6. Document 200 hours of combined experiences in a health and/or medically related field, and community service. These experiences should provide an understanding of the roles of physicians in clinical and community settings, patient and population health issues, and how healthcare teams function.
6. Select applicants will be invited to continue the application process by submitting a supplemental application. The supplemental application will be emailed, and the deadline for receipt of the supplemental application is January 2, 2013. A nonrefundable fee of $100. is required. Applicants who have received an AMCAS fee waiver will also receive a fee waiver from Central Michigan.

ADMISSION PROCESS

Step One: AMCAS Application
The first step in applying to Central Michigan is filing an application with the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). Central Michigan University College of Medicine participates in AMCAS. To submit an application, visit AMCAS at www.aamc.org/students/amcas. This initial process includes using the AMCAS letters of recommendation service. For questions, email [email protected] or call (202) 828-0600. The earliest date for submitting an application to AMCAS is June 5, 2012. Central Michigan’s institutional deadline for filing with AMCAS is December 15, though we recommend that you file the AMCAS application as early as possible to guarantee that you have sufficient time to complete subsequent steps in the application process. If you will not be taking the MCAT until Fall 2012, please file the AMCAS application as early as possible (before you receive your MCAT scores report). AMCAS will automatically forward your MCAT results to Central Michigan.

Step Two: Supplemental Application
Select applicants will be invited to submit a supplemental application to the Central Michigan University College of Medicine.

Step Three: Initial Screening
Once an applicant’s supplemental application is received, the CMU College of Medicine will review your completed application materials to determine whether to invite you to participate in the Multi Mini Interview (MMI) process.

Step Four: Interview

Select applicants will be invited to attend an interview day. Applicants will be notified by email. Please be sure to keep your email address current, and notify both AMCAS and Central Michigan if your email adress changes. The visit will include interviews with the admissions committee as well as tours of the College of Medicine. Central Michigan will use a Multiple-Mini Interview (MMI) process. The MMI interview technique was developed and implemented by McMaster University in Ontario for their MD program. Applicants rotate through 8-10 interview stations. No prior medical knowledge is required for the MMI. Some studies of the MMI indicate that this interview process is better able to assess non-cognitive attributes of applicants, and reduce the variability of subjective criteria and information. The interviewers for the MMI will be members of the Admissions Committee who have been trained in the MMI interview technique.
In the MMI process, each interviewer will pose a pre-developed scenario to each interviewee. The scenario will be related to a single theme such as ethical decision-making, critical thinking skills, or communication skills. Applicants will rotate through the mini interview stations and the interviewers will have an opportunity to assess all interviewees within the context of their respective scenario. A 30-minute individual interview will also be required in person or by videoconference.

Step Five: Admission Offers
Applicants who have been selected by the Admissions Committee for admission will be offered admission on a rolling (ongoing) basis.

Step Six: Acceptance
Admitted students are asked to submit an acceptance letter within 2 weeks of admission.

HOLISTIC ADMISSIONS
Central Michigan University College of Medicine is interested in attracting applicants who will become outstanding physicians. The CMU College of Medicine (CMED) will use a Holistic Admission Review process as a means to identify applicants who will become highly competent, diverse, and caring physicians. The Holistic Review process was developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), and is a means of helping medical school admission committees take personal factors into account in addition to academic factors when assessing minority applicants. In addition to the assessment of an applicant's scholastic and cognitive capabilities, such as GPA and MCAT scores, the admissions process will include a structured evaluation of an applicant’s personal and professional characteristics in the admissions process. Personal characteristics include compassion for others, altruism, preparation for medicine, communication skills, leadership abilities, personal maturity, and cultural competence. Professional characteristics include integrity, reliability, positive work habits, adaptability, teamwork, self-disciplined, resilience, and persistence. Important applicant skills include communication skills that involve the use of listening and oral communication. Analytic skills include the ability to apply logic and critical thinking to a question or problem. The admissions process is also interested in identifying applicants who desire to provide healthcare to communities in central and northern Michigan. CANADIAN AND INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
Applicants from the United States and Canada will be considered for admission. International students (other than Canadian) will be considered if they are able to provide documentation that they have been residents of the State of Michigan for at least one year.

ABOUT THE CURRICULUM
The curriculum at CMED is an innovative educational program focused on team-based education as well as on serving the needs of the community. Central Michigan’s curriculum emphasizes early clinical experiences, and small group learning. The first two years are organized around physiological systems starting with the Foundational Sciences in Medicine. The “Foundations” course provides students with an important baseline of knowledge of variations on normal human health, wellness, and development. The subsequent organ system block courses will use the Clinical Presentation model to provide instruction in system specific disorders and diseases. The Clinical Presentation model teaches students to how diagnose patients, and is based on the ways in which the patient presents to a physician. The model also enables students to integrate their foundational knowledge and acquire clinical reasoning skills. Three longitudinal courses (Essentials of Clinical Skills, Art of Medicine, and Society and Community Medicine) are vertically integrated with the Foundational Sciences and Organ Systems block courses. In addition to clinical work in the community, a state of the art simulation center offers students with an opportunity to practice interviewing, physical examination and diagnostic skills. During the clinical years all students participate in an eight-month community-based longitudinal integrated clerkship in addition to the core discipline clerkships, hospital based rotations, and electives. About student organizations, societies, activities, and athletics at Central Michigan University
Students enrolled in the College of Medicine will have the opportunity to participate in CMU organizations, and will develop additional organizations and activities to fit their interests. Central Michigan University provides students with opportunities to become involved in more than 240 student organizations. Activities outside the classroom are an integral part of the total development process, and students are encouraged to take part in activities of interest to them. A wide range of interests can be pursued through organizations that focus on social issues, student governance, pre-professional development, entertainment, community service, hobbies, club sports, or religion. Involvement in student organizations is an excellent way to develop leadership skills. Many academic departments sponsor student organizations and honor societies. What MCAT score does CMED consider if I have taken the MCAT more than once?
CMU-CMED will consider your highest MCAT score as one of many factors in our holistic admissions process.

What type of grading system will the CMU College of Medicine use?
Years 1 and 2 will be graded as Credit/No Credit. Years 3 and 4 will be Credit/No Credit, Credit with Honors.

How many students do you plan to enroll?
Enrollment in the inaugural (2013-14) and 2014-2015 classes are limited to 60. The class size will increase incrementally in the following two years;

Is preference given to in-state applicants?
All eligible U.S. and Canadian applications will be considered. CMED intends to have 80% in-state enrollment and 20% out-of-state enrollment.

What is the cost of tuition?
Tuition for the 2013-2014 year will be determined at the July 2012 Board of Trustees meeting and will be immediately posted to the CMED website. Tuition rates for CMED are anticipated to be in a comparable range to other Michigan medical schools.

Does anyone know if this requirement will be strictly enforced? The school's website leaves out the last part about community service, only listing medically related activities. I only have 80 hours of medically related activities, but would like to apply here...

Just got the secondary! Got scared there for a bit -- my undergrad GPA is low and so they had to screen me for a secondary.

The info session last week was great. The facilities are super fancy/high tech and the deans are really friendly and seem genuinely devoted to putting physicians in mid/northern michigan. It just seems like it's going to be a really great medical school.

OOS'er here (Ohio). AMCAS verified on 8/8 and got the CMED secondary link a couple hours later. My numbers are pretty average. Maybe it helps that I went to Michigan? IDK.

I have a question about the second prompt which is: "Applicants follow many paths in deciding on a career in medicine. Please describe your path, indicating activities or events that have reinforced your decision. (maximum of 500 words)"

My personal statement describes my path in detail because I'm a non-traditional student. Should I re-summarize my path again, or can I refer the reader to my personal statement?

I think it would probably be best to re-summarize your path again so you don't come off as uninterested or lazy (though I completely understand why you'd want to write something to the effect of "please see personal statement"). Maybe try to spin your story a little differently or include new information so the admissions committee can learn more about you.

I got an email about their info session next month - anyone planning on going to that? I'm thinking about going. Was the last one worth going to? I live like 3 hours away and wanted to know if it's worth the early/long drive that day!

Do you guys think it matters what kind of picture you add to the secondary application? The picture I want to use is of me in a suit and no tie with very mild scruff. It seems decently professional, but do you think I should take a more professional picture with a tie and clean shaven?

Yes, just info session. I wish it were an interview invite, but excited to go regardless! The agenda looks good and definitely seems worthwhile.

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to give you an update from the CMED Admissions Office. We are just starting the secondary application review process and hope to begin making our first interview invites in the first week of October. We are still sending out secondary invites as eligible AMCAS applications are received. We plan to have additional MMI sessions in December, January, February and perhaps March. We hope this info helps.

Does anyone know what kind of stats this school is looking for to make its first year class? Will they be lower than average since they are just starting up? I just want to know if its worth it for me to send in a secondary since im OOS and lower than average...

I don't know if anyone can answer this because nobody knows what kind of people they're giving IIs to yet. Your best bet would probably be to call admissions and ask. I think the class size is only 60 and their mission is to have more physicians for central and northern Michigan - so my assumption is they'll take mostly Michigan and either higher stats from OOS or people with ties to Michigan. This is just me speculating, however, so again - I'd just call admissions
