Yeah I sent out a couple last a few days ago. I'm not sending out a bunch though, want to keep them pretty specific to the program and I'm too lazy to write a bunch like that. :)
I took my top 6-7 and sent letters to the ones I hadn't heard from yet.

I got one interview so far doing this.

edit: I should add that I was "updating" these programs on a recently uploaded SLOE as well.

Steps for success:
  1. Click on the blue "QUOTE" button at the bottom right of the last post (don't copy and paste since it will not pick up the HTML code for boldface fonts).
  2. Remove the bracketed things at the very beginning and very end. (QUOTE=username;numbers) and (/QUOTE) - where the parentheses are brackets

Do you have a SLOR/SLOE and do you have at least 3 letters in? If the answer is yes I think it's time to have a trusted faculty member take a look at your SLOE and your whole app because with your numbers it screams "red flag" somewhere and if you aren't aware of what it is you may not be able to see it and only someone who can see the "hidden" parts of your app (SLOE most importantly) could give you a clue. Are you an IMG or an AMG? Have NO idea what an I/AMG is unless you're trying to say you're an IMG but US citizen. AMG usually refers to American medical school, IMG usually is attached to international grads (Carib) that are usually American citizens. That could be your answer but even if you're an IMG with US citizenship I would have expected you would have at least a couple more interviews with those numbers which points to some kind of red flag...
 
Need advice immediately. 240's/260's on step 1/2 and ranked in top 25% of my class. So far I only have interviews at my home institution and my 3 away rotations. I recently asked a PD if anything on my application stuck out as a negative and he said the only thing was my letters were uploaded kinda late (didn't know October 1-10 was late). Is this really the only thing keeping me from getting interview invites? If a school says its application must be complete by a date like November 1, why does it matter that my letters were assigned like 3 weeks before? Need help ASAP.

How many places did you apply to?

MD? DO? IMG?

My home PD was noting that each year invites go out earlier and earlier. I'd imagine most places were filled by November 1st. Going through interview broker almost all of the places I am going to interview at have no spots left.

Now...who knows how many people will cancel interviews.

Applied to 40 programs. I really thought I was a strong applicant and was going to have no problems with interviews. Now really panicking about my situation. If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate it.

Also it matter 'which' programs you applied to. If you applied to all top tier places that might have been part of the problem.

Wow, that's rough. I'm sorry to hear that. I can imagine how stressful that must feel. I have very similar stats to you and found myself more successful. I'm not really sure what's going on with your app. Did you have all your letters in that first week of October? Or just one? That's really not too late. It's good to know that there isn't any red flag in your app. Have you recently uploaded anything (SLOE, etc)? If so, I'd really recommend contacting ALL of the programs you've not heard from yet and letting them know you're still very interested and that you've updated your application. You've got nothing to lose. One good thing that works in your favor is that it sounds like you've done a lot of aways and assuming you rocked all your EM auditions, you probably do stand a good chance at matching at one of those. Hang in there.

Oct 10th is not that late, my last letters came in around that time. Any leave of absences? Problems during med school? You sound like a solid applicant that should have plenty of interviews by now.

No leaves of absences or problems during med school. Read my dean's letter and everything was very positive. The PD I talked to only said the late letters and that I didn't have a ton of extracurricular activities "if I was being picky." Right now I'm just clueless on where I should go from here.

If your SLOE is in now, then email each program (blind carbon copy to save your sanity) and let them know your application is now complete. It's possible they haven't pressed the update button so they still only see an incomplete application. All the emails of the program coordinators can be found in ERAS in your application.

Heard some interesting news through the grapevine...EM applicants at my school got an email today from one of our attendings saying that he heard some programs were not offering interviews to applicants who hadn't taken Step 2 CK yet. Don't know if this might be a factor for some people.

I thought this was common knowledge - isn't that one of the many things in Charting Outcomes?

Well, in the email he said it was the first year he had heard of such a thing for EM programs. Hell if I know. The conventional wisdom I've heard is that you don't need to take it until later or whenever you want if you scored well on Step 1. This doesn't even apply to me, just putting it out there.

Charting outcomes pertains more to the rank list than interview invites imo.

There is a sizable cohort of people who do not have a step 2 score in at the time of invites but have it in by the time rank lists are generated by programs.
 
Anyone know how to upload Step 2 scores to ERAS, or if we even need to? I just got my score back this past week no programs have downloaded my USMLE transcript since Sepember

you don't upload it, but you gotta go hit "retransmit usmle transcript" under one of the tabs otherwise no one knows it's there

It's not common in EM, but it does happen. I know one classmate who was emailed by a program asking if their CK score would be available soon. Local PD said maybe 10-15% of ACGME programs might want it for interview invites, which was higher than I expected.
 
I've only seen one invite to MUSC or Wake Forest (which was pretty early on) on here and nothing from UT Chattanooga. Has anyone heard anything from them at all?
 
i've only got 8 interviews, half of which are from programs that I've rotated through. my dean decided to send me an email stating that it's a bit on the low side and i should send out emails stating my application is complete. 8 isnt great but i was content up until the deans email, what have you guys heard? i know the last charting the outcome showed the magic contiguous rank number was ~11.

That's funny. I have 8, and my adviser said, "Looking good so far. It's still early for EM, you'll get more."

They probably know about as much as we do, honestly...

well, i talked to my adviser who interviewed me at my school and he mentioned that there's a low chance i wont match but he would like it to be lower. the 10-12 range is best. there were a couple last year with 8-9 interviews that fell through the cracks that they thought would match so the chance is there (it's always there isnt it? :)) told me that if i dont have 10 by thanksgiving, i should start looking at backup FM/IM programs :( dont know what programs are telling you guys but that's my anecdote.

I'd imagine it has to do with how well you interview/socialize with the residents AND the competitiveness of your app. If you applied to 15 programs and got 8 interviews that is a different story than if you applied to 100 and got 8 interviews.

Yeah I dont think I agree with the last part of this. Interviews are interviews especially if you interview well. 8 out of 10 or 8 out of 120 is still 8 interviews and a rank list of 8. If you interviewed well at those 8 I dont think the number you applied to has anything to do with it. I had 9 and dropped one to make my total 8 right now and would have to have one of my specific programs to do more interviews at this point. But every applicant is different.

What the previous poster was trying to say is that the idea that you are somehow all equal at the interview is nonsense. Some people say this, but I can't imagine it's true. The only way this would be true is if residencies only ranked based on the interview, not the applicant as a whole. If a residency interviews 10 applicants for every spot, there will be a significant variance in the quality of applicants. Yes, some programs have the luxury of only interviewing the absolute top tier applicants, but most have a variety.

If someone comes in with a 260/260, AOA, honors in EM, great SLORs and interviews next to someone with 210/220, C student, high pass in EM and decent SLORS, who gets the nod? Sure, if applicant A is a dud and B is a stud, it might go to applicant B, but otherwise, the spot is applicant A's to lose. Yes, it's possible applicant B could wow some people, but this is the exception. Applicant A is the front running coming in. As such, if applicant A has 8 interviews and applicant B has 8 interview, applicant A is much more likely to match. Now, if a train leaves Chicago going 90mph.....

Actually first would be the way you redefined what I responding to, then second would be what you said in the post. Every program is different and no two PD's are alike.
Its nothing personal I just disagree with both the original post I responded to and yours.
