2014-2015 Albany Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you are driving from out of town and not sleeping at the nearby hotel, keep in mind that the traffic can be surprisingly bad for the size of the city. I almost ended up being "that guy" who was late for his interview.

Thanks for the heads up!

First MMI on Oct 6th! :O Excited for this one, never been to NY.

So any med students or applicants who are at Albany...how often to you get to the Big Apple? Is it rare and special or something you do all the time?

Getting to the city is kind of a pain. Amtrak goes straight there in 2.5-3 hours but it's pricy to do frequently. Boston is a smidge closer.

The students that we met on interview day talked about going to Boston on days off/weekends, NYC did not come up. No idea how representative that is.

I'm from Albany. Traffic is really bad and parking is even worse. Definitely double (at least) whatever time your GPS gives you. Honestly, you probably won't go to Boston or NYC except maybe once a year because it's just far enough to not be worth it. Normally people go to Saratoga on weekends or Lake George in the Summer. There isn't a huge night life here at all. There's lot of malls and restaurants though.

Getting to and parking at/near the hospital in the morning is a nightmare, yeah. Leave plenty of time if you're driving in the morning of your interview.

There is a bus between Albany and NYC that is like $20.

Hey guys, so I paid my fee and submitted my secondary on 8/28, and my MCAT scores and letters were received between then and the first week of september. Its now 9/25, and still no "yes" on the complete section. Did everyone else experience this long a wait?

i submitted my secondary on 8/23 and it wasn't marked complete until 9/20. (I called them and they immediately marked me as complete)

Question, for anyone who flew into Albany and are staying at the Hilton Garden Inn. How did you guys get to the hotel?

I don't blame them, I wouldn't want to stay in Albany either. That place is seriously decrepit.

Not my point. I was comparing going to Boston vs. going to NYC. There were not any complaints about Albany.

Albany is decrepit??

The area surrounding the school is fine. But yes there are a few areas in Albany where you will see over half of the homes condemned/with severe fire damage. While I wouldn't call Albany the nicest place this is not the majority of it though.

Hey at least that means rent/mortage will be cheap!

So it seems I'm really late to the party (somehow just found out about this website) but I'll be interviewing 11/03 if anyone will be about!

I'm not sure I agree with the double time...I'm from Albany area as well and I've made it in two hours fifteen minutes from Rensselaer county to Columbia Presbyterian. It's doable, and it's not such a bad place. Personally I favor Montreal for a day trip, which is also convenient and a wonderful city. (Go Habs Go)

Also, I can't help but think that some of the people complaining about Albany have only ever seen the two miles between the highway and the college that takes you through the worst neighborhood. It's a beautiful place in it's own way, and the culture and food is fantastic for a small, forgotten city. If it's too decrepit here, withdraw your application and save the seats for the people who have some respect and appreciation for our historic Capital city.

End of rant.

You must be talking about Albany, CA or Albany, MI.

Out of town traffic was ok, it was the 5 miles from my hotel to the school that took almost half an hour. Maybe I took a non-optimal route or it was unusual day - just thought it was a fair warning for people staying further away.

Agree. I was there for most of the day before interview and drove/walked around as much as I could. Did not see anything that would make me uncomfortable.

To those who have already interviewed: would anyone like to share a little bit about their interview experience? 🙂

Arrived around 1030, hung out with other applicants in lecture hall until orientation/panel. Everyone was very nice, had an awesome lunch (hot and cold wraps, chips, cookies, etc.)

Toured the beautiful campus, with an awesome tour guide I might add.

The MMI was not bad at all. The staff were extremely helpful and encouraging, the interviews went by quickly, and they got us out of there promptly.

All in all, from the faculty to the students to the school and town, it was an extremely fun experience, and that was echoed throughout the other applicants I spoke with.

Any specific questions, feel free to reply or even PM if you'd like.

Looking to share a hotel room with a female for the October 21 interview. PM me if interested!!

I am looking for a female who would like to share a hotel room with me for the October 23 interview.
Message me if interested! 🙂

They've had all of my materials and I've been waiting for "complete" status for a month now... just left a voicemail, hoping to be marked complete 😕

SUCCESS! They emailed me back less than an hour after I left the message. They apologized for the long wait and said they have marked my app as complete.

If you have been waiting with a "no" next to complete for a while, definitely reach out via phone or email!

Does anyone know when they start sending out acceptances? It says October 15th on MSAR, but I thought I heard them say it would be a bit later this year...

Anyone interviewing here on the 15th and is still looking for a room? I haven't booked yet and was wondering if anyone wanted to go halfsies. Pm me if you're interested

Yes, during interviews they said that they start reviewing applications about 2-3 weeks after the interview, but their first review session for the year won't be until some time in late October or November, which is when the first acceptance will be coming out.

Okay, thanks! I thought I heard that during the interview but I just wanted to make sure.
