2014-2015 Meharry Medical College Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Looks like we are some of the early birds =) This thread will most likely pick up in a few weeks!

Good luck to all of you! I'm touring here next Thursday, not applying until next cycle. I'm trying to tour every school I'm applying to, so hopefully Meharry will become a favorite!!

I'm applying here this cycle. I'm really excited about this school! Are there any current medical students willing to dish out some secondary/interview advice? Especially for non-URMs?

If I recall, there were a few that commented on the '13-14 thread as well as the '12-13 cycle thread. But I would love to hear from some of the new current medical students at Meharry!

Please keep us updated on how your tour goes! I'm interested in hearing about it!

Most definitely. I know that it could probably help applicants who are applying this cycle that won't have a chance to tour prior to submitting. My tour is at 10AM this Friday, so I will most definitely be taking some serious notes, and I will come back and update you guys, so that people who are applying this cycle can get a better feel. I toured Howard in April and I am doing Morehouse in July, if anyone else is interested in hearing about those. Just PM me! Good Luck!

Hey all. I'm here waiting on the tour. I drove in from Dallas last night. I will update you when I'm done!

Thanks! We're looking forward to the update.

First of all they get 6500 applicants for 105 spots. No more no less. I did get some insightful info on how to be a good applicant and what they are looking for but y'all can PM me for that...

And let me say now...sorry for typos. I'm on an iPhone and really tired!

Alright! Tour is complete! It took approximately 2 1/2 hours. Overall I give Meharry 4.5 out of 5 stars. Anybody who has talked to me knows I gave Howard 3.5 stars so it's a significant difference. I actually went in kind of biased and didn't think Meharry could out do Howard, I was just completely sold on Howard but after some serious thinking and seeing this school I've changed my mind. I think that on the emphasis of "fit" Meharry is definitely a better fit for me personally. I am from the south so you definitely get that vibe here!

Well first off let me say that Nashville is not at all what I expected. How Nashville is, is what I pictured Memphis to be. The school location is in the "hood". Once you cross those tracks you'll see what I mean. The school is on "Bible Belt". Meaning there is literally a church on each corner and I love that. It is also directly across the street from Fisk and Tennessee State is up the block. The tour began at the learning resource center which is a primarily all glass building and it also houses the library. The library is all digital and keeps the archives and this building is beautiful. Hours are until 1am. On the bottom floor in the basement is the simulation lab. They also pay people to be actors to simulate a certain scenario and to help prepare you. This building keeps the history of Meharry. Pictures of founders, recent graduates. All sorts of history. Shows the beginning and ending of The pharmacy and nursing school. The facilities and buildings are relatively updated.

Down this hill not too far from the LRC is where classes are conducted. The lecture hall still has your traditional push down chair desk flips over lap type of seating. The lecture halls do show some wear and age but it makes up for it with the study rooms. Which are glass as well with an awesome color scheme. Gives a great welcoming environment. In this building the dental students do their clinical science foundation classes in the same building but then go to their own specific building. When we were touring this building you will notice the building has approximately 4 different levels each offering something different whether it was the "research floor" or administration or what not. This building also houses the deans office and the bookstore. The bookstore is BARE. Unlike Howard's which was phenomenal and two story!

Across the street is a new all glass building that is being built which is scheduled to open in August 2014. Current construction was going on while we were there and it is simply beautiful. That is going to be the new student center. It has plans of having a healthy option cafe, financial aid, admissions, and things of that nature all in this building. Basically a "one stop shop" for the student.

The campus is in a square setting which has different resource buildings on each corner. Directly across from the school is the Meharry Medical / Nashville General hospital which is where you will do your rotations. It looks just like a regular hospital. It's not too fancy just white with black letters. There is a mental building for psychiatric services. Also outside you have stadium seating surrounded by greenery which use to be utilized as the convocation but now it's primarily student focused and the students have step shows, cookouts, get togethers etc.

They also have a building called the Epps building which is utilized for academic resources, study resources, help with learning techniques and tutors.

Overall I had a great experience.

So here's my PROS/CONS

Pros: it's an HBCU! The unity and black community. Everything that they stand for and their mission. The family togetherness. I grew up in an all Caucasian very country town (rural area population ~1200) and went to an all Caucasian high school I was one of 6 blacks in my graduating class of 133 so this was huge to me. I loved all the black faculty and how they honestly want you to succeed.

The Epps Center

The new student center

Not a lot of traffic

Low cost of parking

Low cost of living

Heavily Christian based school

Opportunities for student leadership

Opportunities to unite with and work with Vanderbilt

Several student interest groups

Grading scale

Cons: extremely high Tuition (in my opinion) it's about 75-80k a year and coming from Texas where our tuition is ~20k I do give a little side eye to that. Howard is approximately ~50k if anyone was looking for a comparison.

Location of school

Bare bookstore

If there are any questions just ask me. I hope this covered things and it helps you all.

Location of school

Idkkkkk why location of school is listed twice haha sorry
I'm not concerned too much about location given we will all be focusing on studies, but you strike a couple of questions. When you say the location is a con is this due to safety? Or is it due to lack of construction updates?
Also, is housing on campus? Off-campus?

Thanks you so much for providing us all with your information and thoughts!!

Location as in safety. The area is not as nice as I would prefer to live in. That's my personal opinion. I'm not quite sure what you mean about "focusing on studies"...because surely you know people will still go out and you're naive if you think they won't lol but I mean strictly on safety issues not area for entertainment purposes or Nashville in general. They have approximately 3 dorms/apts on campus and there are several nice apartments relatively close to the city. A person I know just graduated from Meharry and she had the same issues of the location and it was confirmed when I visited and I knew what she meant as soon as I drove to the location.

Off topic but if you guys have a chance to come interview here you need to try 5 Points Cantina Mexican Restaurant-- OMG I'm here now and it's delicious!!! Lol. Okay back to school discussions.

I also went to Vanderbilt and Univ of Tennessee in Memphis if anyone is interested in those. PM. Much shorter review on those though. Good luck! I leave for Dallas in a few! I hope I helped y'all. I'm going to Morehouse in 3 weeks so check that page for that review!

I just have a general question? I'm not taking MCAT until August and I just thought it was "smarter" , well not necessarily smart but it just seemed more logical to wait until next cycle to apply, but I'm seeing more and more people applying with these late MCATs. Why would y'all schedule a date so late in the cycle..why would you take it before primary opens? Just trying to see what would be the better course of action?

I talked to some admission people of various med schools and they said it would not affect my application. I have not talked to Meharry admission yet. I'm not taking the MCAT until August because that is when I will be ready and there was no way that I could study for it while finishing my post bad program. A lot of schools sends secondaries automatically so my secondaries will be completed when they receive my MCAT score.

I'm applying here as well. Do you know how it will affect my application if I'm not taking my MCAT until August?

My understanding is that earlier is always better but I dont believe August is too late. The only concern is if you apply to a bunch of schools (costing a good chunk of money) and then get a low score.

@prettyNURSEtoMD , you rock m'lady! Your reviews are on point lol; just the right amount of info. As for the August MCAT, I'm taking mine in July. I scheduled originally to take it in May but I would rather wait and do a better job than rush it and do poorly. I know that September is the absolute latest MCAT that they will take, so you guys should be good.

According to last year's thread, they didn't get secondaries until 2-6 weeks after they got the email saying their primary was received. So I'm sure it'll be awhile before we get secondaries...

So I called admission yesterday and it looks like secondaries will be going out August 1st. Good luck everyone!!

I knew they'd be coming out some time in August but it's nice to know it'll be early on. I've already turned in 6 other secondaries (only applied to 10 MD schools), so I'd like to get them all out of the way.

+2. Secondary received and submitted.
