2014-2015 University of Miami (Miller) Application Thread

How long did it take people's photos to show up?

8 days. I sent the photo in six days before my secondary and got a reply stating they had added it a day later. The photo section section didn't have a check mark after I submitted the secondary, so I had to re-send the picture.

So far I am on Day 11 after I sent in my photo and no email or green check. Should I email them? 11 days is kind of ridiculous...

Definitely email. I just re-sent the photo, but I made sure to put my AMCAS ID in the subject and in the body.

For people who received both regular MD and MD/MPH interviews, please help me here:

Please check your email for the "Medical School Interview Confirmation."

Does it mention anything about regular MD and MD/MPH or does it only mention MD/MPH? My email subject only says MDMPH Program and it only mentions MD/MPH in the email body even though I was invited for both regular MD and MDMPH. What does yours look like?
Please - anyone who has scheduled their interviews for both MD only and MDMPH.

Can you please answer this question and tell me does your confirmation email also mention MD only or does it only talk about MDMPH. Please help.

My confirmation email did not mention MD only. Only MD/MPH. My thinking is is that the MD only interview is at the Miami campus and the MD/MPH is at the Palm Beach County campus. I suppose maybe I should have called to confirm this, but I'm currently working abroad so it's difficult for me to contact the admissions office. Hope I helped a little.

My initial interview email mentioned both MD and MD/MPH while my confirmation email only mentioned the MD/MPH program. From what the interview coordinator told me when I called, we will get one interview at either the Miami campus or the Palm Beach County campus. They will let us known which campus the morning of the first day. From my understanding, the interview will be used in consideration for both the MD only and MD/MPH programs.

Hey guys, my photo was received on 7/23 which made my application complete, but I still have the same "under review" status. Its been almost a month now with this status.... are they going in random order or is this a hold. I am starting really get worried because UM is one of my top choices..

Thanks. I ended up getting it right after that message and submitted it right away.

Does anybody know if you have to put intro courses for the bio prereq? My intro grades were soso, but I had pretty much strait A's in the upper level courses.
I think you can put whatever bio course you want. They're just looking for completion.

For those doing the MD/MPH interview, is this at JFK Medical Center? I'm not sure; I'm looking online but I can't really find anywhere that confirms this. Going between the Miller campus in Miami and this JFK center is a 3.5 hour train ride, that seems a bit far, or at least a one hour car ride. Is this correct?

Yes it is in Palm Beach. I'll be renting a car!

Hey so is anyone doing the MD/MPH program on October 27th and 28th? I'm too young to rent a car so it would be best to hitch a ride. I'd be willing to split the cost!

I thought you had to be 20-24 at least-- I'm guessing you're not? My family doesn't feel comfortable with me going to Miami by myself at all so they're coming down with me to drive…flights are really cheap through Spirit right now.

I was also looking at US Grad Schools Compass which I just got, and it seems as if Miami accepts like 3/4 of people who interview there-- so what exactly does the other 1/4 do to garner a rejection or wait list if anyone has an idea? I interview there in a few weeks and I'm just wondering what are things that could make you part of that unfortunate 1/4.

there's no magic happening. The 1/4 who get rejected probably just had worse interviews. Maybe they were poor speakers. Maybe they were unable to explain why their experiences warrant a seat in medical school. Maybe they came across as arrogant.

I'm 20. You technically can rent a car but it's honestly not worth the cost.

Does anybody want to carpool to and from West Palm Beach with me? I was told that the interviewees usually figure it out the morning of the interview at the Miami campus on Monday, but it would be nice to plan ahead. I will be interviewing September 29-30 for the MD/MPH program.

Did anybody get a "complete email"??
I got a "picture received" email-- but not a complete. Wait at least 10 days for the picture received email though. You can check if you're complete or not after they say they've received your "picture complete" email.

Hey, I would love to carpool with you. I can PM and we can talk about details and such.

Is anyone else unable to log on to their status page? I put in my credentials and then nothing..

Maybe they're updating my status to "Interview ready"? Maybe they're giving me a rejection? Maybe they shut down the medical school???

It's probably nothing. I'll stop being neurotic now.

I finally completed that monster of a secondary today! Woot woot! 🙂

Did anyone else wait a long time before receiving their secondary? My wait time from the initial email to the secondary invite was about 4 weeks. At first I thought they screened pretty hard so I was excited but then I saw that they send it to most applicants...

ever since i completed my secondary over a month ago it doesn't let me log in off the link in the email... i have to click "home" at the top left and then click the long link and then log-in for some reason.... maybe you are having a similar issue

Thank you both for the reply. Yes, that is my understanding as well of how the interview process works at UMiami. I was just concerned about some possible of technical error.

My status page is, quote:

"Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine."

Is this a generic statement indicating that my file is complete, or are they actively reviewing it?

Thanks all!

Not sure if this will help but I was having a similar issue:

If you're using the link from the 'Thank you for submitting your Secondary Application' email, it won't work. I think that link takes you to last years portal. You can use the link from the .pdf instructions we received to fill out the application, or do as @amad01 said above.

Emailed my photo now +15 days from now and it still hasn't been marked complete. Called admissions and apparently they're going through over 500 photos right now and they have just been behind. Just a FYI for anyone still missing photo on the app portal.

I just recently got interested in this school, do you think it is worth it to submit my primary at this point? It looks like it takes time to receive the secondary, and no point in applying if i'm going to be late and at a significant disadvantage.

Question about MD/MPH program. I was originally planning on applying straight MD although I have interest and experience in public health. But I'm worried that my stats are slightly lower than the average: MCAT 30 (09PS/10VR/11BS) and cGPA 3.66, sGPA of 3.46 but with very strong upward trend; sGPA for sophomore year and beyond, during which time I took most of my science courses, is 3.87. ECs and LORs are both excellent though, plus I am a Spanish-speaker (although not URM) and a demonstrated interest in international medicine and serving underserved Latino populations. Also LGBT for what it's worth, although I'm not sure they will care about that.

So my question is, does it help to apply MD/MPH if your stats are slightly lower than the average, or is that program even more competitive than the regular MD program in terms of stats? I'd be happy with either program--I just really want to go to UM because I think it'd be a great fit. Advice much appreciated 🙂

I'm a current MS2 in the MD program. To answer your question, yes stats wise the MD/MPH program is a lot less competitive than the MD (for the 2014 matriculating class, the GPA/sGPA/MCAT averages were 3.76/3.72/33.5 for the MD vs 3.65/3.55/32 for the MD/MPH). But keep in mind that the MD/MPH class also tends to have more non-traditional students and generally tend to have more students that bring something interesting to the class through more unique experiences and ECs, while the MD class tends to have more traditional students, including about 20 students from UM's 7 year combined BS/MD program.

Also, someone is probably going to ask this so I'll let everyone know: UM is NOT true P/F, even for pre-clinical years, despite what some people may mislead you to believe on your interview day. You get a P on your transcript if you score 75% or above in a module, but the exact numerical grade is also listed on your transcript next to the P (so P/85, P/94 etc), and your weighted numerical average from all your modules is used to rank you into quartiles as well as determine your eligibility for AOA. This does make the class very competitive, but it can also motivate people to stay on top of their game so they don't get screwed on Step 1. Generally, the MD students have done better on Step 1 than the MD/MPHers (the MD/MPH program is very new so this is based on just one year of data, and some of the deans though the those step 1 scores where not up to par) but this is probably more due to the overall academic caliber of the students in each program as suggested by their undergrad stats than differences in how the two programs are taught.

" 7. When asked for a chronologic list, please list start and stop dates along with a very brief description of the activity. "

I like how they put this on Page 2 of their Application Instructions pdf... yet, fail to mention it anywhere on the application. In fact, this even tops their failure to mention that you should include your AMCAS # in the subject line of your photo e-mail.

poop i messed that up too...

I'm curious if they screen for secondaries since my secondary email said, "Congratulations. You have been selected to complete a secondary"... of only 12 500 word essays (or lists). Also, I didn't see a place for the picture when I completed the secondary. I don't think I missed it. I just sent it in an email as directed. How long does it take for them to match the picture to the application and call it complete?

I completed my secondary in 1,530 words or 9,542 characters. As far as the picture goes, that's up in the air. I guess it just depends on who is on shift when they process your e-mail. After completing the secondary it will inform you of the following,

"We are missing your photograph.
Please send an e-mail to [email protected] and attach a photograph of yourself (showing from your waist or shoulders up).
Please put Application Photograph and your AMCAS #- in the e-mail Subject Line."
Also, someone suggested earlier that we might try using [email protected] rather than the aforementioned e-mail. They failed to mention why they believed this.

08/26: emailed pic w/AMCAS ID in body
08/28: emailed pic w/AMCAS ID in body and subject
09/03: picture was processed

When I spoke to the admissions office, they said either email is fine. My bet is that everyone double sending their photo is probably slowing them down even more, since they have to sort through multiples now.

I'm really hoping for II MIami!!!!! has it been slow? not many II i've seen here lately...

So if I submitted my app for MD way back in say end of July and I'm thinking of applying to MD/MPH....would that be stupid? Is that even possible?

More importantly, I got an interview invite to another Florida school close by and I was wondering if I should send UMiami an "in the area" email? I'm all the way from West Coast.... =( Does anyone think theyre receptive to it?

For people who have already interviewed (or perhaps know about it) for MD/MPH AND MD, how does the second day go? Is the second day an interview too-- UMiami says there is one on the second day, I've read on SDN that it's just a campus tour? I'm just curious. I'm also very curious how much you have to know about public health for the MD/MPH interview-- I'm very interested in the concept of public health and can talk about it, but I don't know much about Miami's MPH program, nor can I find much information on it (in terms of curriculum, how that's different from the MD program). If anyone can give me a link or a few lines of advice/information, I'd really appreciate it!

Also, does anyone know who we get interviewed by at either of these locations? I don't see this information online either. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!
