2014-2015 University of South Carolina - Greenville Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just received secondary. No action in this thread. Where ya at, people?!

That's a killer secondary although same as last year! Might as well just give my soc security # and they can look up my life history!

Its a doozy of a secondary:

Optional/depends on Applicability questions:
If you are a reapplicant, what have you done to strengthen your candidacy? (May be left blank when answer is NO, 2000 characters)
If you have experienced academic difficulties in college, please briefly explain circumstances regarding any courses with a grade less than a B minus, or any course withdrawals. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
If you are currently participating in an academic program, please project intended coursework for the academic year. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
If you do not expect to spend this academic year in school, please explain how you intend to use this time. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
Please describe any additional medically-related volunteering/shadowing/experience not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
Please describe any additional community service or volunteer activities not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
Please describe any additional research, teamwork, accomplishments or leadership experience not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
Please provide any information regarding personal challenges/hardships that you have overcome not included in your AMCAS application. (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
If you are not a South Carolina resident, what relationships, bonds, or interests do you have to this state? (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
What other additional information would you like the Admissions Committee to consider that has not been previously addressed? (If not applicable, this question may be left blank, 2000 characters)
Does this application represent a career change, if yes please describe your first career? (it says 32,000 characters but i think this is a typo)
Describe any past achievements, experiences, special family or personal circumstances that you believe make you a unique student, able to bring diversity to the class (32,000 characters same problem as above with the character count)

Required:
If you are not accepted to medical school for the upcoming academic year, what are your plans? (2,000 characters)
What traits, experiences, challenges, interests, etc. make you unique and would bring added value to the learning environment at USCSM-Greenville (2,000 characters)?

One of the Guiding Principles of the USCSM Greenville states that "Students will practice patient-centered care that values the interdependent roles of health care providers and facilities in service to their patients." Describe your understanding of and commitment to patient-centered care and how successful implementation of this principle will help address the medical needs of your future patients and the community that you serve (500 words)

Yeah this one is insane (especially if many of the opitonal essays apply to you) good luck.

So for all these things not included in the AMCAS application (volunteer, leadership, research, etc) - did you guys get creative and come up with new things to put for each? I definitely already put the most important things I've done in my AMCAS application, so I'm not sure if they're trying to get us to come up with new stuff or if anyone left these blank.

Is it just me or do they ask the "diversity" question twice on this secondary?

Has anyone received an e-mail stating that your application is complete? No update since I submitted my secondary application on July 9th.

Checking in! I'm an OOS applicant with moderate stats looking to apply here. Are the folks in Admissions at USC-Greenville more keen on OOS applicants than the MUSC folks are?

I've done some research on Greenville and I am really starting to like it! Should I give them a call and talk with them about my GPA, MCAT numbers, OOS status, etc. to get a feel for my chances?

They're much more keen than MUSC for OOS apps, but from what I understand you still need ties to SC to be considered. Also, USC schools give in-state tuition after the first year, while MUSC does not.

Not sure if anyone cares since this thread is pretty quiet but I received an interview invite today. It's my first of the cycle so I'm pretty excited.

Congrats! I am OOS with decent ties to the Greenville area. I would love to get an II here too.

Thank you. As far as status updates, this was the first correspondence that I received from them other than the secondary link. Didn't even get a "complete" email once I submitted it so I'm not sure about updates.

Congrats on your II!! 🙂 Can you please share when you were complete?

Just received an email of completion after 6 weeks! Exciting!!! 😀 (OOS, complete 7/9)

So I am flying into Greenville for an interview at another school on 9/16. Does anyone know how USC-Greenville feels about in the area emails?

Every correspondence I have had with USC-Greenville has been incredibly positive- I can't imagine they would have a problem with one. The worse they can say is that they don't consider them!

Just got the complete email, dang thatbtook a while considering I submitted in early july

finally submitted! I hope i get another interview here...love this school!

Got an II today. I'm OOS.

The school looks great, but have you guys seen non-resident tuition here? It's ridiculous! $88,840 tuition and fees for M1. You can get resident status after M1, apparently, but that's still a huge amount.

Edit: And to be clear, I thought I had reviewed the tuition for all the schools I was applying to, but I must have missed this one, because I didn't know tuition could go that high!

Do you have strong state ties? I'm OOS too and I don't really have any substantial state ties, so I'm a little worried about that.

Not really. My first cousin went to Furman, but she moved back to Memphis last year. I don't have any other family in SC. In my "ties to SC" essay I mentioned that I knew about Greenville because of the cousin, but was upfront that my ties are really to the South in general and not SC specifically.

Gottcha. Thank you! Would you mind sharing your stats?

congrats on the II! When were you complete?

Hello, I am extremely new to SDN.
Quick question: Do USC SOM send secondary to only students they pre-reviewed or do they just send it to all verified applicants?
I received USC SOM secondary yesterday.....I know I am late into the game and have to get my head full in to complete that long long secondary....🙁......But I have hopes🙂🙂

What % of applicants are sent a secondary application?

When I was interviewing a few weeks ago, I believe I heard them say that they do screen applicants before sending secondaries. However, I'm not sure as to the %. You could always email the school and ask them? They're very friendly and get back to you quickly.

Congratulations Scred92....quick question: are you from south carolina and did they put emphasis on your residency status during interview.....cheers

Thank you! I am from SC, and they didn't really put much of an emphasis on the fact that I was in-state. I know this school is generally more OOS-friendly than the other SC medical schools. Good luck!

Did you apply ED or another type of program? MSAR says the earliest they can send acceptances is Oct 15th.

II today! Complete 9/11. OOS applicant. Relatively close ties

In case anyone is wondering, two things I learned from interview day:

1. 100% of the current M3s passed Step 1 of their boards.
2. I think the next time they will accept people will be Nov. 14 or somewhere around there.

Hey everyone, I was wondering if later interview dates from Greenville mean a lesser chance of getting in. I have an interview for Jan. 20th. It seems like chances would diminish as spots fill up, right?
