I was considering posting our dates, but that would kinda destroy anonymity, not that I've hidden my identity particularly well. We do have well over 100 applications already though. A lot of, "Can't wait to meet this guy" and "Why did they bother applying?"

I apologize, I know that this forum is supposed to be about interview dates... but, without isolating/identifying any single applicant, can you please share some characteristics that set some applicants apart as either highly desirable or less desirable for vascular surgery residency? I appreciate any insight.

At this point, LOR from faculty that we know at other institutions.

I imagine that most people applying to integrated vascular programs are also applying to general surgery programs. Is it poor form to apply to both programs at the same institution? If one does this, how do you explain it come interviews? I don't thing the vascular programs would have a problem with this but I imagine the general surgery program may not be so thrilled that you are applying to both.

I ask this because I applied to both programs at one institution and got an interview invite for the GS program but have not heard back from the VS program. Perhaps I should cancel my VS app and just got to the GS interview? Any thoughts? I'm sure many 5+0 applicants will be in the same boat at some point.

I would say that it is half and half. I applied to GS and IVS as did the majority of people in my program, but two applied only IVS. I think the growing trend is toward only IVS as more and more programs open. There is no explanation necessary. It may rub some of the GS programs the wrong way, but there isn't a ton you can do about it if they catch on. Some places like Northwestern will only interview you for one or the other, but not both. The NWM IVS program also only does one interview day and it is always the 3rd Saturday of January and they don't send out invites until later in the season (they interview 10 for 1 spot). Somewhere like Yale or UPMC will interview you for both programs.

Out of curiosity, how many IVS and GS interviews did you go on? I was thinking somewhere around 10&10 would be a good number giving one >90% of matching.

Its been a little while, but I think I went on 6 GS and 16 IVS. A lot of it was when programs got back to me. At some point I felt comfortable and started turning down interviews at places that I wasn't as interested in.

Not great here either at 1/2. If one doesn't get an offer in the first round of interviews, is there still hope for that program or is it a no go? I know in GS there are multiple rounds sent out so there is still hope if you don't get the first round but I'm not sure in IVS...

looking at previous year's threads, it seems like for some places there are multiple rounds and other places just have one round.

Things are a lot less regimented than GS because the numbers are smaller, but the vast majority of programs will invite multiple times during the season. We are preparing to send our first set next week (depending if our PD finishes going through all of the completed applications today/tomorrow). The only exception to this that I know of is Northwestern who traditionally have one interview day and do one set of invites for their one spot.

Let's keep the format the same as in previous years. I find the format that they use in the GS forum to be less than ideal.

Seems like a slow day today. No new interviews. People must be busy reviewing MSPEs.

Hey guys, it's been awhile since I have been on this forum, hope everyone is doing well. Wanted to see if vascular surgery is similar to general surgery, in which a much better step 2 ck score can make up for a less than stellar step 1 score. I wasn't sure with a much smaller applicant pool, if the program directors are more likely to review an entire application, than automatically cut someone out due to board scores. Seems like they appreciate LOR and rotations in vascular more so in vascular than other fields.

Also, do most programs in vascular only send out one batch of interview invites?

Take care
