I've been accepted to both the University of Kentucky and Ohio State University Honors but I am having trouble deciding on which school I should attend. For Kentucky, I was admitted to their BS/MD program. But I'm questioning whether or not a degree from Ohio State holds more weight than one from UK. Without question I plan to go to medical school. I am not sure where to go for undergrad. Which institution will optimize both my graduate school success and career in medicine overall. I'm afraid of passing up an opportunity for BS/MD and earning a degree from a nationally ranked and incredibly rigorous institution.

Go to Kentucky, it doesn't really matter where you went to undergrad or for medical school. Any US med school gives you a great opportunity to become succesful. Kentucky is a great med school, you'll get a fine education there, don't let rankings determine where you decide to go. Once your a doctor no one will really care where you went to undergrad. Not just that but you are gambling that you get into med school later after undergraduate studies, and year after year it is getting harder to get in.

Overall, it depends on what you're looking for.

I recently interviewed at OSU, and I was very impressed. It's a school with a great reputation, fantastic facilities, supportive staff and a friendly student body. While it's true that every medical school offers you a great opportunity to become successful, if you are considering a competitive medical specialty or want to keep your options open, an education at OSU would give you an edge. Approximately a quarter of the incoming OSU Medical School class is comprised of students who attended OSU for undergrad, so the SOM seems to have a bias for its own students.

That being said, your undergrad education will be much less stressful if you attend a BS/MD program. Also, the average GPA and MCAT for OSU are high, so you'll have to work hard to get into its school of medicine. The undergrad education at OSU is difficult, so you'll have to work hard to earn a good GPA there so you can get into any medical school. Since you gained admission into a BS/MD program, I'm assuming you are motivated and can handle the challenge. My friends who participated in BS/MD programs earned the highest grades in their undergrad classes and would have been admitted to med school regardless. However, know that you have to work hard and there are no guarantees.

Isn't UK's combined degree program 6 years? I would go there just for that reason.
