2016-2017 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!!

Also interviewed that week, but didn't hear back today...what does this meannn :/

So I get the sense that Stony Brook does most things pretty manually. For example we manually scheduled our interviews with the office after getting IIs. My offer came with scans of my official acceptance letter, so I think they do them one by one. I imagine their first round of decisions, good and not so good, will trickle in all week.

anyone having trouble paying the deposit? i get an error saying its not accepted for term of admission

II! congrats to all the early birds with their acceptances tho, ya'll rock!

If my memory serves me well dr.Breezy been getting super fast turn around so I wouldnt use him/her as a gauge. His/her app really been catching adcoms eyes

It should be flattering you worked hard to get this far, and have a good story to tell and killing it! You are a exceptional applicant so for us neurotic people it doesnt serve us well to use you as a gauge to see if we were passed over because your application obviously jumping out to adcoms!! Also there is a really supportive URM thread down below stop by and say hi

Well damn, I've been feeling a bit sick today, but your words made my day, thank you. And I'm sure you're an exceptional applicant yourself! in the end the time will come for all of us to celebrate . I'll be sure to check out the thread!

Does anyone know how Stony Brook views "in the area" emails? I have never sent any of these emails, but I am a CA resident who will be interviewing in New Haven, Boston, and Long Island during the end of November/early December and would love to NOT have to book another flight/take off more time from work. Any help appreciated! In terms of stats, I was complete 9/6, LizzyM ~76, nontraditional (third gap year currently), non-URM applicant. Thanks in advance!

Anyone know it Stony would be receptive to a "letter of intent" type email? I had my fourth interview of this cycle at SB and I really want them to be aware that they are my first choice and that I would be withdrawing from everywhere else if I'm accepted here. I feel like I never really got the chance during the interview to convey that they are my top choice.

Can't hurt

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe @PreMedReap123 means their interview at Stony Brook followed interviews at 3 other schools.

So it seems like not a whole lot of decisions came out yet? It looks like in past years the big wave came out earlier. Hoping to hear soon 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Anyone with a interview can please tell me when are the earliest dates available. I know its done by email but I imagine they give you a timeline of available dates .

Any tips for the interview here? Any current students want to say what they enjoy about stony brook the most?

Interviewing here later this week. IS, LM = 64. Wondering what to expect and how much I should be preparing. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Quoting posters from page 4 for you guys!

Interviewed here a few days ago and it was a super laid-back process. They sit you in a lounge room with the other applicants and your interviewer just comes to pick you up and then brings you back after. It was two interviews: 1 student, 1 faculty, open file. Definitely felt more conversational than anything, no grilling questions. After the interviews, they gave you lunch in the lounge room where MS2s and MS3s let us ask questions. Then, the medical students took us on a tour, we watched a short video about Stony Brook and if you didn't have any scheduled interviews for the afternoon session you were free to go!

I think with each interview I get lazier and lazier, so I'm just going to add on to @woozchew123. The admissions office was super nice, and it was definitely really laid back. The interview day was a lot shorter than the other interviews I've been in, so not a lot of waiting around--for me, it was interview, lunch/tour, really short info/financial aid session, video, and second interview. They definitely read your file so please refresh yourself beforehand! My faculty interview was 60+ minutes while my student interview was only 30 minutes (it was a bit rushed so maybe there was some sort of time limit? or maybe she had class haha).

Some feedback on SDN mentioned a lot of "grilling"/ethics questions so I was a bit nervous, but both my interviews were very conversational and more just getting to know you.

Good luck everyone!

Edit: ok I have to mention the food. sandwiches. but like....a slab of deli meat on bread, maybe 1 slice of cheese. if that doesn't sound appetizing, eat a big breakfast beforehand! but they also had potato chips and yogurt.

I have not heard back either 🙁 Can we call and ask?

I'm sure we can...I do wonder how often the committee meets in determining application statuses. Week 7 post-interview here and the silence is making me melt!

When they emailed me all they said was "Please select dates beginning 11/1" No timeline.

Any interviewees from September hear back yet?

Congrats to everyone getting acceptances!

It looks like they are reviewing people that interviewed in October now... does anyone know what that means for people who interviewed mid September and haven't heard yet? It doesn't look like waitlists or rejections came out yet?

Anyone knows if you can go on a interview day wait list? I emailed Nancy about it and got no response .

Personally I think it means WL or rejection. In the past year threads it also seemed like people who were accepted heard back before people who interviewed in an earlier date, which turned out to receive WL or rejects later on. Sorry that's a pessimistic answer and it might be biased on how neurotic I feel at the moment but also it does mimick about the same timeline as 2015-2016 cycle applicants and their decisions timeline.

Has anyone else who interviewed in September heard back? I'm hoping there's still hope for us.
